Chapter 5

585 Words
Hazel sat on an office chair with a table before her. She placed her right elbow on the table and her palm under her chin as she scanned through the case file. None of these cases made sense. Missing persons, people hearing voices from the 31st street which is said to have been empty. Could it be that someone would have been using these scary events to abduct people and making the mass believe they’ve been taken by ghosts? She thought. She was taken aback by the loud knock on the door. “Are you planning on working late tonight?” “Nora, you scared me” Hazel said with her right hand on her chest as she breathes a sign of relief. “You’re still working on the missing persons case? The 31st street” Nora asked. She placed one hand on the doorframe and the other on her waist. “It all doesn’t makes sense” Hazel replied hitting the files on her table. “Well it does to me, 31st street is haunted and I don’t need an exorcist to tell me that” Nora whispered. “Seriously? If it’s haunted then why doesn’t the ghosts haunt those who live nearby?” Hazel replied with a soft laughter. “And come to think of it, ghosts are just fictions so are wolves, witches and vampires. Come off it girl” she added waving her pen in a circle. “Believe it or not, how else would you explain the number of people that have gone missing in the 31st street just in the last two months?” Nora asked raising an eyebrow. “That’s what the culprit wants us to believe but I’m not that stupid, someone’s behind this and I’m going to fish out the culprit” Hazel replied. “Suit yourself, but be careful” Nora replied. She turns to leave but then turns back and threw something on the table. “The talisman helps to ward off evil spirits, you’re going to need it” she said before she left. “Really?” Hazel chuckled. Just as she moves her gaze back to the case files, she hears a knock on the door. “I’ve heard you Nora, I’ll put it on” Hazel said without taking her gaze off the case files. “Put what on?” The masculine voice wasn’t Nora’s. She was forced to lift her head. “Maurice, sorry I thought you were Nora” she apologized. “You’re not done with work yet? I thought we planned on going to the 31st street for clues” he said still standing at the door post. “I’m just scanning through the files, I’ll be done in a bit, you go first I’ll catch up with you” hazel replied. “Maybe we should just postpone it since you’re busy, maybe tomorrow” Maurice said. He lifts up his glasses and scratches his nose. Hazel could tell with the look on his face, he was scared of going there on his own. She almost laughed seeing the look on his face. “Ok, fine tomorrow then, partner” she replied. “Are you sure you can stay here all by yourself? It’s getting dark, or do you want me to...” “I’m fine” Hazel cuts him short. “Ok then, see you tomorrow” he said before he left. Hazel let’s out the laughter she had been holding back before returning to the files.
