Chapter 3 “Not supposed to what?” he asked, His tone made me shiver, how teasing. “To...” I struggled to find the words, my thoughts muddled by his proximity. “To be together like this. Not until the wedding.” Don chuckled softly, the sound sending shivers down my spine. “Who’s watching us now, Jane? Who’s here to enforce those rules?” he tightened his hand on me “Before the Ceremony, After… you are mine regardless. And I will have what is mine when I want.” I swallowed hard, my resolve wavering as his thumb brushed against my bottom lip. “This isn’t about rules,” he continued, his voice dropping an octave, his eyes darkening. “It’s about me, and How I want to treat you” “How do you want to treat me?” He gave me an unwavering stare, then without breaking eye contact, kissed my hand “Better” The words caught me off guard, my heart stuttering in my chest. Was this real? Could this cold, distant man truly feel something for me? “You make it so hard to stay angry with you,” I said, my voice trembling. “Then don’t,” he whispered, his lips brushing against mine, so lightly it felt like a dream. I closed the distance, the kiss igniting something deep and primal within me. His hands tightened on my waist, pulling me flush against him as the last of my resistance melted away. “You’re mine, Jane.” He said against my lips“Only mine” “Don,” I whispered my voice a mixture of fear and longing. He jammed his lips back onto mine and all I could feel was passion and something pent up for the longest time escaping. His touches were tender yet commanding, each movement designed to erase every doubt I had. For the first time since arriving here, I felt seen, cherished, and truly loved. And as the night stretched on, I let myself believe, if only for a fleeting moment, that this was where I belonged. —----- I slipped back into my room the next morning. I barely had time to gather my thoughts before Julia stormed into the room, her face frowning. Her sharp green eyes scanned me, I had made sure my hair looked as neat as possible but it just wasn’t the same as when I left. And my dress was wrinkled. “Where exactly have you been all night?” she demanded, her tone biting. “I—” I started, struggling to find an answer that wouldn’t reveal too much. “You didn’t come back to your room,” she snapped, crossing her arms over her chest. “And don’t you dare try to lie to me? I know where you were.” Heat rushed to my face as I opened my mouth, but the words caught in my throat. “I didn’t... Nothing happened,” I blurted out, my voice weak and unconvincing even to my own ears. “Nothing happened?” Julia repeated, her tone dripping with sarcasm. She took a step closer, her voice rising. “You expect me to believe that you spent the entire night in his room, and nothing happened?” “It’s the truth!” I insisted though I could feel my voice wavering under her scrutiny. “Of course, ” she cut me off, her voice sharp. “But you’re playing with fire, Jane. Do you think catching his attention is a blessing? It’s not. He’s ruthless. Cold. He won’t hesitate to toss you aside the moment it suits him. Just because you will be married to him does not mean you shouldn’t stay out of his sight, even after marriage.” Her words pierced through the bubble of hope I’d been holding onto since last night. “Why am I the one who has to follow all these rules? I didn’t ask for this,” I grumbled. “Any of it.” No, but you can make it worse for yourself. Stay out of his way. Don’t give him a reason to use you as a pawn or worse, discard you entirely.” I bit my lip, tears threatening to spill over. Julia wasn’t saying this out of concern for me, I knew better than to think that. She was worried about what would happen to the alliance, to the pack, if I jeopardized it. “I’ll be careful,” I said quietly, lowering my gaze. “You’d better be,” she replied curtly, turning on her heel and heading for the door. “And clean yourself up. You have a wedding to prepare for, whether you like it or not.” As the door closed behind her, I sank onto the edge of the bed, the weight of her words settling heavily on my shoulders. The warmth I’d felt from last night was gone, replaced by a cold, creeping doubt. Was Julia right? Was I fooling myself by thinking Don’s actions meant anything more than convenience or control? I buried my face in my hands, torn between the memory of his touch and the harsh reality of my situation. For the first time, I wondered if trusting him last night had been a mistake. – By the afternoon, I convinced myself it would all work out. No one would know about last night, and once the ceremony was over, things would settle. Tomorrow, everything will change. I straightened my dress and headed down to the main hall. My pack members would be arriving today. After the ceremony tomorrow, I will officially be part of Don’s pack, so this will be the last time I greet Alpha David as my Alpha. Plastering on a polite smile, I greeted them warmly, pretending everything was fine. My father, The Beta to Alpha David. Stood beside him. The two of them shared a similar unamused gaze “Where is your soon-to-be husband.” My heart stretched a bit, Thinking about when I last saw him, laying in bed half asleep and indifferent as I left back to my room “I don’t know where he is, But he will be here if he knows you have arrived” “Okay,” Alpha David said “Join us to eat this welcoming DInner they are preparing for us” — Time dragged on, and the mood began to shift. Don still hadn’t shown up. My father exchanged uneasy glances with David, who was growing visibly impatient. Finally, David spoke up, his voice sharp. “This is disrespectful,” he said, frowning. “Where is the Alpha King? Does he think so little of us that he won’t even greet us the day before the wedding?” Just then, the Dining doors opened and Baron, Don’s beta, stepped in with your usual neutral expression. “Greetings Alpha and Beta of the stone pack.” he said and exchanged nods with them “I want to inform you that Alpha Don won’t be able to see you tonight” David’s face crumpled like paper. He said nothing yet, waiting for Baron to finish. “He left early this morning for an important meeting with an ally pack. He regrets not being able to greet you personally but deemed this matter urgent.” David’s jaw tightened, He’d better be back in time for the ceremony tomorrow,” he said coldly, before turning away to speak with my father. I stayed silent, trying to keep my face neutral, though my chest tightened. Why would Don leave now, of all times? “Actually,” Baron said “The matter isn’t simple, he may take days before he comes back. I don’t think the Ceremony can be held tomorrow.” Apha David threw a fit, Baron remained calm and started negotiating with My father if they wanted to stay just the night or a few more days before going back” All I could think about was the thought of Don just up and leaving when our wedding was tomorrow. I can barely hold myself together, what if someone finds out we slept together before the ceremony happens? That night, I couldn’t sleep. After tossing and turning for hours, I finally got up and walked around, eventually ending up in the quiet hall that led to the pack's moonpool. The dim lights and sounds of moving water calmed me as I got to the end of the hall where the moonpool was. The quite calmed my nerves. The beautiful scene of the sacred moonpool brought me no calm. Tears I’d been holding back spilled over as I sank to my knees by the edge. What was I doing? Why did it feel like everything was falling apart before it even began? I cried until my chest hurt until I fell asleep on the cold floor. I woke up late at night, wondering if anyone even wondered where I was. I wiped my face and forced myself back to my feet. No one cared how I felt, not even Don. I made my way back to my room collapsed onto the bed and went into another deep sleep. —- The next morning, I woke up late and headed down for breakfast, only to hear so much commotion as I came down the stairs. When I reached the courtyard, I saw a gathering of furious pack members near the moon pool hall entrance. “Who did it!” Someone yelled as the arguments intensified, I was worried and curious. I slept past the distracted crown and rushed down the hall to meet even more people still in commotion. And the Moonpool …The water was blackened, the sacred markings around it cracked and broken. It was destroyed. “What happened?” I asked, stepping forward. All eyes turned to me, I felt like I was being examined. “You tell us, Jane,” one of the elders said, his tone icy. “The guards tell us you were the last one seen near the moon pool.” My heart sank. “Are you saying I didn’t do this? Why would I destroy the Fangs pack’s scared moon pool? Pack’s can’t operate well without it. I have no reason to!” The elder stepped closer, hi s eyes narrowing. “Perhaps because you knew you’d already committed an even greater crime.” “What crime?” My voice trembled, but I held his gaze.
