The growl reverberated through the cabin as the Silverfang Alpha stepped fully inside, his broad shoulders filling the doorway. His scarred face twisted into a predatory grin, his piercing gray eyes fixed on Ari.
Elara’s instincts surged, her body moving on its own as she yanked Ari behind her. “Stay back!” she snarled, her voice laced with the power of her wolf.
Kieran was already moving, stepping between them, his stance low and ready to fight. “Rylan,” he growled, his voice colder than the winter winds. “You’ve made a mistake coming here.”
The deep, guttural sound of Rylan's laughter made Elara's neck stand on end. “Mistake? No, Kieran. This is strategy. And you’ve made it so easy, gathering your precious family in one place.”
Caleb lunged forward, his anger boiling over. “You’re not taking them!”
Rylan barely spared him a glance, a flick of his wrist sending Caleb crashing into the wall. Elara gasped, her heart pounding as Caleb slumped to the floor, groaning.
Rylan’s smile widened. “Pathetic.”
Kieran’s growl deepened, his wolf just beneath the surface. “You want a fight? Then let’s finish this here and now.”
Elara’s pulse quickened. “No,” she said sharply, her eyes darting between Kieran and Rylan. “We can’t fight him here. Not with Ari—” Her voice caught. “Not with him in the crossfire.”
“Wise,” Rylan said, his voice dripping with mockery. “You always were the smart one, Elara. Too smart to fall for Kieran’s games. And yet, here you are, still tied to him.”
Her jaw clenched, anger surging alongside fear. “What do you want?”
Rylan tilted his head, his smile turning cruel. “A deal. Your daughter for your son.”
Elara’s breath hitched, her blood turning to ice. “What?”
“You heard me,” Rylan said, his tone almost casual. “Hand over the boy, and I’ll give you the girl. Simple.”
Kieran stepped forward, his voice a deadly growl. “You’ll get neither.”
Rylan's laughter remained unwavering. "Oh, but there's nothing you can do. You're outmatched, outnumbered, and out of time. Tick-tock, Alpha.”
Elara’s mind raced, her heart pounding in her ears. She couldn’t lose Ari. But Lyra—her daughter was out there, scared and alone.
Her voice was shaky but resolute as she responded, "I won't do it." "I refuse to exchange one child for another."
Rylan’s eyes darkened, his grin fading. “Then you’ll lose them both.”
Before anyone could react, Kieran moved faster than Elara thought possible. The two of them crashed through the door and into the snow outdoors as he tackled Rylan.
"Elara!" She was brought back to reality by Caleb's voice. He was standing, holding on to his ribs, but he was still alive. “Get Ari out of here!”
Her gaze darted to Kieran and Rylan, locked in a brutal fight under the moonlight. She knew Caleb was right. They couldn't win this battle, not now or here.
"Ari," she whispered, lowering herself to his level.“We’re going to run, okay? Stay close to me, no matter what.”
The boy nodded, his eyes wide with fear but trusting.
With the sound of growling and crashing wood fading, they ran out of the cabin and into the forest. Even though the chilly air pricked Elara's skin, she continued to move forward as quickly as her legs would allow.
Beside her, Caleb staggered, breathing heavily. “We can’t keep running,” he said between gasps. “They’ll track us.”
Elara’s mind whirred, searching for options. “We need to split up. If they follow one of us—”
“Not happening,” Caleb interrupted, his tone resolute. “I’m not leaving you and Ari.”
A branch snapped behind them, and Elara froze, her ears straining. The forest was too quiet, the whispers gone, replaced by an oppressive silence.
“They’re coming,” she murmured, pulling Ari closer.
Caleb drew a knife from his belt, his grip steady despite his injuries. “We make a stand here, then.”
“No.” The word was sharp and commanding. Elara turned to him, her gaze fierce. “I’m not losing anyone else.”
Elara's heart fell when a stranger appeared out of the darkness. It wasn't Kieran, but it also wasn't Rylan.
She had never seen the man before, but the silverfang emblem on his breast made her stomach turn.
“Hand over the boy,” the Silverfang said, his voice cold. “And we’ll spare your lives.”
Caleb stepped in front of Elara and Ari, his knife glinting in the moonlight. “Over my dead body.”
The silverfang smirked. “That can be arranged.”
The attack came fast, a blur of movement and snarls. Elara shifted, her wolf instincts taking over as she lunged at the intruder. Her claws slashed through fabric and flesh, but more shadows moved in the trees.
They were surrounded.
“Elara!” Caleb shouted, his voice desperate.
She turned, just in time to see another Silverfang closing in on Ari.
“No!”
She flung herself at the assailant, her teeth digging into his arm as her scream rang out through the darkness. She ripped through him with a savagery born of desperation despite his howls.
“Behind you, Elara!”
It was too late for Caleb to warn. She crashed into a tree after taking a hard hit to the side. Despite the excruciating pain shooting through her ribs, she forced herself to stand, her eyes swimming.
The Silverfangs closed in, their numbers overwhelming. Elara’s body screamed in protest, but she refused to back down.
And then a deafening howl split the night.
The attackers froze, their heads snapping toward the sound.
A guy appeared out of the shadows, his eyes blazing with rage.
Elara muttered, "Kieran," as fear and relief mixed in her chest.
But something was different. His presence was darker, more menacing. His wolf wasn’t just near the surface—it was fully unleashed.
“You want a fight?” Kieran’s voice was a growl, his teeth bared. “Come and get it.”
The Silverfangs hesitated, but only for a moment. Then chaos erupted, Kieran tearing through them with a ferocity that made even Elara shiver.
As the conflict continued, Rylan emerged at the edge of the clearing, staring at Elara.
His voice broke the cacophony as he called, "This isn't over." “You’ll make the trade—or I’ll take them both.”
And with that, he disappeared into the shadows, leaving Elara trembling, her heart pounding as Kieran stood amidst the c*****e, his eyes wild and unrecognizable.
