Chapter 3-Part 1

The compound woke before sunrise. It always did. Adrian stood on the balcony outside Marcus Valente’s office, the cold morning air cutting through the thin fabric of his shirt as he looked out over the endless line of dark pine trees surrounding the estate. Mist clung to the forest floor. From this height the world looked quiet. Peaceful. Deceptively normal. But Adrian knew exactly what lay hidden beneath that illusion. Armed patrols rotated along the perimeter every twenty minutes. Thermal cameras covered the entire tree line. Motion sensors ran beneath the soil near the outer fence. Even the forest itself wasn’t natural. Marcus had purchased the surrounding land years ago and deliberately left it wild. No neighbors. No hikers. No reason for anyone to wander close enough to notice the security. A perfect cage. Behind him, the glass door slid open quietly. Marcus stepped out onto the balcony, already dressed in a dark suit despite the early hour. He carried a glass of black coffee in one hand. “Good morning, Adrian.” Adrian didn’t turn. “Morning.” Marcus joined him at the railing, looking out across the forest. “Beautiful, isn’t it?” Adrian didn’t answer. Marcus chuckled softly. “You’ve never appreciated scenery.” “I appreciate strategy.” Marcus sipped his coffee. “And what does your strategy tell you about our guest?” Adrian finally turned slightly. “She’s already testing the building.” Marcus raised an eyebrow. “How long did it take?” “Less than twelve hours.” Marcus smiled faintly. “I expected nothing less.” Adrian studied him carefully. “You left the door unlocked.” “Yes.” “You wanted her to try escaping.” “Yes.” Marcus set the coffee cup on the railing. “Fear reveals character, Adrian. And character reveals leverage.” His gaze shifted toward the main building. “Tell me. How did she react when you stopped her?” “She argued.” Marcus laughed quietly. “Of course she did.” Then his expression sharpened slightly. “Did she panic?” “No.” “Did she cry?” “No.” Marcus nodded slowly. “Good.” Adrian frowned slightly. “Good?” Marcus looked at him. “A broken hostage is useless.” “That’s not always true.” Marcus tilted his head. “You think I want to hurt her.” “You kidnapped her.” “Yes.” “But harming her defeats the purpose.” Marcus turned back toward the forest. “Alessia Vale is far more valuable intact.” Adrian crossed his arms. “You’re underestimating her.” Marcus smiled faintly. “No.” “You’re curious about her.” Marcus didn’t deny it. “She’s intelligent.” “That makes her dangerous.” “That makes her useful.” Adrian’s jaw tightened slightly. Marcus noticed. “You disagree.” “She’s not weak.” “I never said she was.” “She’ll fight you.” Marcus looked almost amused. “I hope so.” Adrian studied him for a moment. “You’re enjoying this.” Marcus shrugged lightly. “War is boring without worthy opponents.” Then he picked up his coffee again. “And Thomas Vale has finally given me one.” Adrian’s voice dropped slightly. “You think he’ll negotiate.” “He will.” “What if he doesn’t?” Marcus sipped his drink calmly. “Then his daughter suffers.” The words were spoken casually. But something about them made Adrian’s chest tighten slightly. Marcus noticed the reaction instantly. “You don’t like that possibility.” Adrian said nothing. Marcus smiled faintly. “You’re growing sentimental.” “No.” “Then why the hesitation yesterday?” Adrian’s eyes narrowed slightly. “There was no hesitation.” “You watched her.” “Yes.” “You let her move.” “Yes.” Marcus chuckled softly. “Interesting.” Adrian’s voice hardened slightly. “I was assessing her behavior.” “Of course you were.” Marcus leaned casually against the railing. “Tell me something honestly, Adrian.” Silence. “Is she different?” Adrian didn’t respond immediately. Finally he said, “Yes.” Marcus smiled. “I thought so.” Adrian looked at him sharply. “You expected that?” Marcus nodded. “People like Alessia Vale always stand out.” He tapped a finger lightly against the coffee glass. “They’re the ones who change the game.” “And you kidnapped her anyway.” “Precisely.” Adrian exhaled slowly. “You’re playing with fire.” Marcus laughed. “My dear Adrian.” His voice lowered slightly. “I built this empire in fire.” Before Adrian could reply, one of the security guards stepped onto the balcony. “Sir.” Marcus turned. “Yes?” “There’s been movement.” Adrian’s head lifted instantly. “Where?” The guard hesitated. “Inside the compound.” Marcus frowned slightly. “What kind of movement?” “Your guest.” Adrian’s stomach dropped slightly. “What did she do?” The guard glanced at a tablet in his hand. “She left her room again.” Marcus smiled slowly. “Well.” He looked at Adrian. “It seems our little experiment continues.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Where is she now?” The guard tapped the screen. “Garden courtyard.” Marcus’s smile widened. “Perfect.” Adrian’s eyes narrowed. “Why perfect?” Marcus set his empty coffee glass down. “Because that’s where the others are.” Adrian’s expression darkened slightly. “You shouldn’t mix her with them.” Marcus shrugged. “Why not?” “She’s not like the others.” Marcus smiled again. “That’s exactly why this will be interesting.” He looked toward the guard. “Bring up the camera feed.” The guard turned the tablet around. Adrian stepped closer. And the moment the screen came into view… His stomach tightened. Because Alessia Vale was standing in the center of the courtyard. Surrounded by six men. And none of them worked for Marcus. Marcus’s voice remained calm. “Well.” Adrian’s pulse slowed dangerously. “Those men are prisoners.” “Yes.” “They’re not supposed to be near her.” Marcus smiled faintly. “No.” “They’re violent.” “Yes.” Adrian looked at him sharply. “You set this up.” Marcus’s eyes gleamed slightly. “I want to see what she does.” Adrian’s voice hardened. “This is a mistake.” Marcus turned to him. “Relax.” He gestured toward the tablet. “Let’s watch.” On the screen, one of the prisoners stepped closer to Alessia. Too close. Adrian’s muscles tensed instantly. Marcus noticed. “You’re worried.” “No.” “Then why are you reaching for your gun?” Adrian froze slightly. He hadn’t realized his hand had moved. Marcus’s smile deepened. “Ah.” His voice dropped slightly. “This just got interesting.”
