Chapter 4- Part 4

The air in the training room felt different when they stepped back inside. Warmer. But not by much. Alessia walked past Adrian without waiting. She stepped onto the mat again, her movements slower now. More deliberate. She had seen enough. More than enough. This wasn’t just a compound. It wasn’t just a prison. It was something far worse. And Adrian was part of it. She turned to face him. “Continue.” Adrian watched her carefully. “You’ve seen enough for today.” “No.” Her voice was steady. “I haven’t.” Silence. “You said survival.” “Yes.” “Then teach me.” Adrian studied her for a moment longer. Something had changed. He could see it. In the way she stood. In the way she looked at him. She wasn’t just reacting anymore. She was adapting. “Fine.” He stepped onto the mat across from her. “This time you’re not pushing.” “Then what?” “You’re getting out.” “Out of what?” Adrian moved fast. One second he was standing in front of her— The next his hand was around her wrist, pulling her forward while his other arm moved behind her back, trapping her. Alessia’s breath caught as her body collided lightly against his chest. Her arms were pinned. She couldn’t move. Adrian’s voice was low near her ear. “This.” Her pulse jumped. “Get out of it.” Alessia reacted immediately. She twisted her wrist. Turned her shoulder. Shifted her weight. Nothing worked. His hold didn’t loosen. Didn’t shift. Didn’t give. “Adrian—” “Don’t think. Move.” She tried again. Faster. Harder. Still nothing. Her breathing picked up slightly. “You’re stronger than me.” “Yes.” “Then what’s the point?” Adrian’s grip tightened slightly. “The point is you won’t always win.” His voice dropped. “But you might survive.” Alessia forced herself to focus. Think. Observe. His grip. His balance. His stance. Then— She moved differently. Instead of pulling away— She stepped into him. Adrian’s body shifted slightly. Just enough. Her hand slipped free. Adrian released her immediately. She stepped back, breathing slightly heavier. Silence. Adrian studied her. “That was better.” Alessia’s lips curved slightly. “I learn fast.” “Yes.” A pause. Then she stepped closer again. Closer than necessary. “You didn’t expect that.” “No.” Her eyes held his. “Maybe you’re not the only one adapting.” The tension between them thickened again. Different now. Sharper. More dangerous. Adrian didn’t step back this time. Neither did she. Alessia tilted her head slightly. “You’re trying not to touch me.” Adrian’s voice was controlled. “I’m training you.” “Mm.” She stepped even closer. “Then train me.” The words hung between them. Heavy. Loaded. Adrian’s restraint snapped just slightly. His hand caught her wrist again. Pulled her forward. But this time— The movement wasn’t just controlled. It was deliberate. Closer. Too close. Her back nearly brushed his chest again. His voice lowered. “You’re testing boundaries.” “Yes.” “You shouldn’t.” “Why?” Silence. Then— “Because you won’t like where they lead.” Alessia’s breath slowed. Her voice softened slightly. “Try me.” For a moment— Adrian didn’t move. Didn’t speak. Didn’t let go. And that was the moment everything shifted. Because this wasn’t just training anymore. And they both knew it. The door to the training room opened suddenly. Both of them pulled apart instantly. Marcus Valente stood in the doorway. Watching. Smiling. “Well,” he said softly. “This is becoming far more interesting than I expected.” Silence filled the room. Marcus stepped inside slowly. His eyes moved between them. Calculating. Satisfied. “Adrian.” Adrian’s voice returned to its usual calm. “Yes.” Marcus’s smile deepened. “Don’t break her.” His gaze shifted to Alessia. “Not yet.” And just like that— The game had changed again.
