Chapter 5- Part 2

Adrian didn’t argue again. Not out loud. Marcus had already made the decision—and arguing further would only confirm what he was trying to deny. Still— That didn’t mean he accepted it. The walk through the compound was silent. Marcus led. Alessia walked beside him. Adrian followed half a step behind. Watching. Always watching. The shift in positioning wasn’t lost on him. Marcus in control. Alessia within reach. Him— Close enough to intervene. Far enough to observe. Calculated. Everything Marcus did was calculated. They stopped in front of a section of the compound Adrian knew well. Too well. His jaw tightened slightly. “No.” Marcus didn’t even look at him. “Yes.” Alessia glanced between them. “What is this place?” Marcus entered a code into the panel beside the door. “Your new quarters.” The lock disengaged with a soft mechanical click. Adrian stepped forward. “That area is restricted.” Marcus finally turned. “To most.” A beat. “Not to her.” “That’s not the point.” “No,” Marcus agreed calmly. “It isn’t.” The door opened. Marcus stepped aside slightly, gesturing for Alessia to enter first. “Go on.” She hesitated only briefly before stepping inside. Adrian followed immediately. Of course he did. He wasn’t leaving her alone in a place like this. Not now. Not after what she’d seen. The room was— Different. Larger than the one she’d been in before. But colder. More minimal. Clean lines. Dark surfaces. Controlled lighting. There was a bed. A seating area. A wall of reinforced glass overlooking nothing but another sealed section of the compound. And— One door. Adrian’s gaze locked onto it immediately. Marcus noticed. “Ah,” he said lightly. “You recognize it.” Alessia turned. “What is it?” Adrian didn’t answer. Marcus did. “It connects.” Silence. Alessia frowned slightly. “Connects to what?” Marcus’s smile deepened. “To Adrian’s quarters.” The words landed heavily. Adrian’s voice dropped instantly. “No.” Marcus ignored him. “The door remains unlocked.” Adrian stepped forward. “That’s not happening.” Marcus turned to face him fully now. “Correction.” His tone was calm. Controlled. Final. “It already is.” The tension in the room sharpened instantly. Alessia felt it— Like a shift in pressure. Something dangerous. Something inevitable. Adrian’s gaze hardened. “You’re crossing a line.” Marcus tilted his head slightly. “Am I?” “Yes.” Marcus smiled faintly. “Interesting.” He stepped closer. Lowered his voice just enough that it forced Adrian to focus. “You’re reacting exactly how I expected.” Adrian didn’t move. Didn’t speak. Didn’t give him anything more. But Marcus didn’t need it. He could already see enough. His attention shifted to Alessia. “You’ll find this arrangement… beneficial.” Her arms crossed slightly. “How?” Marcus’s expression softened—just slightly. “Access.” “To what?” “To safety.” Her eyes narrowed. “And him?” Marcus smiled. “Yes.” Silence. Adrian exhaled slowly through his nose. Controlled. Measured. Barely. Marcus turned toward the door. “I’ll leave you to settle in.” He paused just before stepping out. Then glanced back. “Adrian.” A beat. “Try to behave.” The door closed behind him. And just like that— The pressure remained. Only now— There was no buffer. No distance. No Marcus standing between them. Just— Silence. Adrian didn’t move for several seconds. Then— He walked straight to the connecting door. Checked it. Unlocked. Of course. His jaw tightened. He turned back toward Alessia. “This changes nothing.” She leaned lightly against the edge of the table, watching him. “It changes everything.” “No.” “Yes.” Their gazes locked. She tilted her head slightly. “You don’t like this.” “No.” “Why?” Adrian didn’t hesitate. “Because it’s unnecessary.” Alessia smiled faintly. “That’s not the real reason.” His expression didn’t shift. “Then enlighten me.” She pushed off the table slowly. Stepping closer. Measured. Deliberate. “You don’t like not being in control.” Silence. “That’s not it.” “No?” She stopped a few steps away from him. Close— But not too close. “Then what is it?” Adrian held her gaze. “You shouldn’t be here.” “That’s also not the real answer.” His voice dropped. “It’s the only one you need.” Alessia shook her head slowly. “No.” Her voice softened— But only slightly. “It’s the only one you’re willing to give.” The words settled between them. Heavy. Accurate. Dangerous. Adrian turned away first. A mistake. Because it gave her space to move. And she used it. Alessia walked past him. Toward the connecting door. Adrian’s voice sharpened instantly. “Don’t.” She paused. Her hand resting lightly against the handle. “Why?” “Because you don’t need to go in there.” Alessia glanced over her shoulder. A faint smile touching her lips. “Marcus said I have access.” “Marcus isn’t the one who has to deal with the consequences.” That— That was the closest he’d come to the truth. And she caught it immediately. Her fingers tightened slightly on the handle. “Then maybe I should understand them.” Before he could stop her— She opened the door. Adrian’s quarters were darker. Less polished. More functional. Everything had a purpose. Everything had a place. Nothing unnecessary. Alessia stepped inside slowly. Taking it in. Observing. Understanding. “This is you.” Adrian didn’t respond. He stood in the doorway behind her. Tense. Watching. “It’s efficient.” “It’s controlled.” “It’s empty.” Her voice softened slightly. “Just like you.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. “You’ve seen enough.” She turned to face him. “Have I?” Silence. She stepped closer again. Crossing the invisible line between the rooms. Between his space— And hers. “You let me walk in here.” “I didn’t stop you fast enough.” “That’s not the same thing.” Adrian didn’t respond. Because it wasn’t. And they both knew it. Alessia stopped in front of him. Close again. Too close. “You could have.” A pause. “But you didn’t.” Her voice lowered slightly. “Why?” Adrian’s control slipped— Just slightly. “Because you don’t listen.” Alessia smiled faintly. “No.” Her eyes held his. “Because you wanted to see what I’d do.” Silence. The tension between them coiled tighter. Thicker. Harder to ignore. Adrian stepped closer. Closing the last bit of distance between them. “That’s a dangerous assumption.” Alessia didn’t move. “Is it?” “Yes.” “Then prove it.” The words were quiet. But they hit harder than anything she’d said before. Because this wasn’t curiosity anymore. This was intent. And Adrian knew it. He should have stepped back. Created distance. Restored control. But instead— He didn’t move. Didn’t speak. Didn’t break the moment. And that— That was the problem. Because now— They were both standing in a space neither of them could pretend was neutral anymore. And the longer it lasted— The harder it would be to step away.
