Chapter 5- Part 3

The space between them didn’t exist anymore. It hadn’t, not really—not since the moment she stepped through that door. But now— Now it was undeniable. Alessia could feel it in the way Adrian stood in front of her. Too still. Too controlled. Like something restrained just beneath the surface. And for the first time— She understood exactly how dangerous that was. Not just for her. For him. “Then prove it.” The words still lingered in the air between them. Heavy. Provocative. Intentional. Adrian’s gaze didn’t waver. But something in it changed. Darkened. Sharpened. Not losing control— No. Worse. Choosing not to hold it as tightly. “Careful,” he said quietly. Alessia’s breath slowed. “Why?” A pause. Then— “Because you’re stepping into something you don’t understand.” Her lips curved slightly. “Then maybe you should explain it to me.” That was the wrong thing to say. Or maybe— Exactly the right one. Because something in Adrian snapped. Not loudly. Not violently. But decisively. His hand caught her wrist— Fast. Firm. Pulling her forward. Not enough to hurt. But enough to remind her— He could. Easily. Alessia’s breath hitched slightly as her body shifted closer to his. Closer than before. Closer than it should have been. Adrian’s voice dropped. Low. Controlled. Dangerous. “You think this is a game.” Her pulse quickened. “I think this is leverage.” A flicker of something crossed his face. Gone in an instant. “That’s your mistake.” “And what’s yours?” Silence. Then— “That you think you’re in control of it.” Alessia didn’t pull her wrist away. Didn’t step back. Didn’t break eye contact. Because she could feel it now. That shift. That edge. That moment where something could tip— Either way. “Maybe I am.” Adrian’s grip tightened slightly. Not painful. But deliberate. A warning. “You’re not.” “Then stop me.” The words were barely above a whisper. But they landed like a challenge. And for a second— Just a second— Adrian looked at her like he might. Like he should. Like he knew he needed to. But he didn’t. And that— That was the moment everything changed. Because instead of stepping back— He stepped closer. Closing the distance completely. Her back met the wall behind her before she even realized she’d moved. Or maybe— He’d moved her. It didn’t matter. What mattered was this: There was nowhere else to go. No space left. No illusion of control. Just proximity. Heat. Tension that had been building since the moment they met— Finally snapping tight. Adrian’s hand still held her wrist against the wall. His other arm braced beside her. Caging her in without touching more than necessary. Without crossing that final line. But close enough— That the line barely existed anymore. Alessia’s breath slowed. Not out of calm. Out of focus. Because right now— Everything was him. “You don’t understand what you’re asking for,” he said quietly. Her voice was softer now. But no less steady. “Then make me understand.” Another mistake. Or maybe— The last one. Because this time— Adrian didn’t answer with words. His grip shifted. Not loosening. Not tightening. Changing. His hand slid slightly lower along her wrist— Slower. More deliberate. And that was the difference. That was what made it dangerous. Because this wasn’t restraint anymore. This wasn’t training. This wasn’t control. This was awareness. And Alessia felt it instantly. Her breath caught— Just slightly. Adrian noticed. Of course he did. His gaze dropped for a fraction of a second. To her lips. Then back to her eyes. That— That was the moment. The one that couldn’t be undone. The one that changed everything. Alessia didn’t move. Didn’t pull away. Didn’t break it. Because now— She understood. Not just the game. Not just the power. Him. And that was far more dangerous. “You’re hesitating,” she whispered. Adrian’s jaw tightened. “You’re pushing.” “Yes.” “Why?” Because she needed control. Because she needed leverage. Because she needed something in this place that wasn’t dictated by Marcus. But that wasn’t the answer she gave. “Because you won’t.” Silence. Then— Adrian leaned in. Not enough. Just enough. Enough to erase the last safe inch of space between them. His voice dropped lower. “You’re wrong.” Alessia’s heart stuttered once. “Am I?” And then— Everything stopped. Because the door opened. Marcus Valente stood there. Watching. Of course he was. Of course he had been. The timing wasn’t coincidence. It never was. His gaze moved slowly between them. Taking in everything. The proximity. The tension. The way neither of them had moved apart yet. A slow smile spread across his face. “Well.” The word was soft. Satisfied. “This is exactly what I was hoping for.” Adrian stepped back instantly. Distance. Control. Restored— But too late. Marcus had already seen it. Alessia straightened slowly. But she didn’t look away. Didn’t retreat. Didn’t pretend. Because she understood something now. Marcus stepped into the room. “You see,” he said calmly, “pressure reveals truth.” His eyes landed on Adrian. “And yours is becoming very clear.” Adrian’s voice was cold. “This stops.” Marcus tilted his head slightly. “Does it?” “Yes.” “No.” The word was quiet. Final. Unshakable. Marcus turned toward Alessia. “And you.” His smile softened slightly. “You’re learning faster than I expected.” She held his gaze. “I adapt.” “Yes.” His eyes flicked briefly toward Adrian again. “I can see that.” The implication hung heavy in the air. Adrian stepped forward. “Stay out of this.” Marcus’s expression didn’t change. “I’m the one who put you in it.” Silence. Sharp. Tense. Marcus clasped his hands behind his back. “This is working.” Adrian’s voice dropped. “No.” “Yes.” Marcus’s gaze hardened slightly. “You’re attached.” “No.” “You’re distracted.” “No.” “You’re compromised.” That— That one landed. Because for the first time— Adrian didn’t answer immediately. And Marcus smiled. “There it is.” Alessia felt the shift instantly. That crack. That moment where control slipped just enough to matter. Marcus turned slightly toward her. “You were right, you know.” “About what?” “Your way out.” Her pulse steadied. “And?” Marcus’s smile deepened. “It’s him.” Silence. Adrian’s expression darkened instantly. “No.” Marcus ignored him. “To be precise—” He stepped closer. “—it’s what he’s becoming when he’s around you.” The room felt smaller suddenly. Tighter. More dangerous. Alessia held Marcus’s gaze. “And what is that?” Marcus’s voice dropped slightly. “Unpredictable.” A beat. “Which makes him vulnerable.” Adrian stepped forward again. “That’s enough.” Marcus looked at him calmly. “Is it?” “Yes.” Marcus smiled faintly. “I don’t think so.” He turned toward the door. “But we’ll see.” Before leaving, he paused. Just long enough to deliver the final piece. “Careful, Adrian.” A beat. “Or she won’t be the only one who becomes leverage.” The door closed behind him. And this time— The silence that followed was different. Heavier. More dangerous. Because now— There was no pretending. No denying. No distance left to hide behind. Alessia looked at Adrian. He didn’t look back immediately. And that— That was the problem. Because for the first time— Adrian Cross wasn’t in control of the situation anymore. And they both knew it.
