Chapter 3

294 Words
Celeste's POV: The third time I opened my eyes, I shot straight up from the bed, rushed to the door, and twisted the lock shut as tightly as I could. Almost at the same moment, I heard the doorknob being turned from outside. My phone lit up, and that nightmarish news alert appeared right on schedule. "Honey, open the door." I pressed my back against the wood, my heart hammering in my chest. With shaking hands, I dialed Aaron's number. It rang a few times before he picked up. "Celeste?" came Aaron's familiar, tired voice through the speaker, and my tears broke free at once. "Aaron..." "Sorry, love. There's an emergency project at work all of a sudden, so I'll probably be working late. Go to bed early. Don't wait for me." My stomach dropped completely. The one outside was definitely Corwin. Heavy blows thudded against the door, and Corwin's voice grew more frantic by the second. "Celeste, open up! Why are you locking the door?!" I spoke quickly into the phone. "Aaron, no matter what you hear, do not come home! Call the police! Call them right now!" After hanging up, I took a deep breath and shouted as loudly as I could toward the hallway. "Corwin!" The pounding stopped dead. One second. Two seconds. Then came even more violent blows against the door. "How did you figure it out?" Right after he spoke, a deafening crash echoed through the apartment, and a long c***k split across the door panel. He had grabbed a fire axe from the hallway. Blow after blow rained down, sending splinters flying everywhere. Corwin's cold, razor-sharp laugh drifted through the widening gap. "Since you already know, I won't bother pretending anymore. You're dying tonight, no matter what, Celeste."
