Two days later, Elena lay on the examination table again, but this time
felt different. Today, she would become pregnant. The embryo transfer
was a simple procedure, Dr. Chen had assured her, but Elena's hands
trembled as she changed into the hospital gown.
Adrian sat in the chair beside the examination table, closer than he'd
been during previous appointments. Elena could smell his cologne
again and feel the tension radiating from his body.
"Nervous?" she asked quietly.
Adrian glanced at her, surprised. "Should I be?"
"It's your baby too."
Something flickered across Adrian's face. "It's my genetic material being
transferred to your womb. That's different."
Elena stared at him. "How is that different?"
"Because after nine months, the child comes home with me, and you
disappear from our lives forever."
The words hit Elena like a physical blow. She'd known the terms of their
arrangement, but hearing Adrian state them so coldly made her realize
how little he saw her as human.
Dr. Chen entered with a small team of medical staff. "Good morning. Is
everyone ready to have a baby?"
Elena winced at the casual phrasing. Adrian's expression remained
stoic.
"Elena, we'll start with an ultrasound to check your uterine lining," Dr.
Chen explained, dimming the lights and positioning the equipment.
The ultrasound gel was cold against Elena's skin. On the monitor, she
could see the black and white images of her reproductive organs
displayed for everyone to examine.
"Perfect," Dr. Chen murmured. "Your body has responded beautifully to
the hormone treatments. We're ready to proceed."
A technician wheeled in equipment Elena didn't recognize. Everything
looked sterile and mechanical, nothing like the romantic way she'd once
imagined her first pregnancy would happen.
"Mr. Blackwell, would you like to observe the transfer?" Dr. Chen asked.
Adrian hesitated. "Is that necessary?"
"Not necessary, but many intended fathers find it meaningful to witness
the moment."
Elena watched Adrian's internal struggle. He clearly wanted to maintain
his emotional distance, but curiosity and perhaps something else won
out.
"I'll stay."
Dr. Chen prepared the catheter while explaining each step. Elena tried
to focus on her words instead of the discomfort, but she was intensely
aware of Adrian watching everything.
"Here we go," Dr. Chen announced. "Embryo transfer in progress."
Elena felt a brief cramping sensation, then nothing. On the ultrasound
monitor, she could see a tiny flash of light as the embryo was placed in
her uterus.
"And that's it," Dr. Chen said cheerfully. "You're officially pregnant,
assuming implantation is successful."
Elena stared at the monitor. Somewhere in her body was a cluster of
cells that might become Adrian's child. The thought was both
miraculous and terrifying.
"What happens now?" Adrian asked.
"Bed rest for the next twenty-four hours. Then we wait. We'll do a
pregnancy test in two weeks to confirm implantation."
As the medical team cleaned up, Elena remained on the table,
processing what had just happened. She was potentially carrying Adrian
Blackwell's baby.
"How do you feel?" Adrian asked unexpectedly.
Elena looked at him. For the first time since they'd met, his guard
seemed down. He looked worried, maybe even vulnerable.
"Strange," Elena admitted. "Like my body doesn't belong to me
anymore."
"It doesn't. For the next nine months, it belongs to my child."
The clinical statement should have annoyed Elena, but something in
Adrian's voice suggested he was trying to convince himself as much as
her.
An hour later, Elena was settled in her apartment bedroom, following
doctor's orders to rest. Adrian had returned to his office, leaving
instructions with building security about her care.
Elena's phone rang. Rosa's name appeared on the screen.
