Part 5
The sun painted the scene as the three stumbled along the ruins of a broken city. The Horizon Protocol was averted, for now at least. Their bodies ached and their minds raced with all they had just been through. The control room was still a place of nightmares and so too was the ghost of Evelyn Cross who's last words to her would haunt her for eternity, "Chaos is the key", she had whispered before collapsing.
Their journey through the ruined streets was halted by what looked like a central square full of Emergency and military units, the latter taking control over the locals to bring order to the chaos. Whispers of what was happening floated past Elena's ears like she was hearing the wind. It seemed as if word of a digital takeover had gotten around.
Her comm unit pinged and she looked at it hesitantly before opening the connection.
"What is this?!" Elena hissed as she stared at the message on her screen.
'Just another pawn. The real puppet master watches the games unfold.' The message read in rather simple terms. Elena's gut clenched as she realized the game was only just starting to get interesting. Someone had taken advantage of the mayhem and they were watching everything unfold with glee. That 'someone' was determined to cause further chaos and was going to go to any lengths necessary to do so. She glanced around warily as if the man was right there in front of her.
'Chaos is always preferable to the alternative after all'
Chapter 1. The Past Lives On
Days passed in what the new government wanted to keep as a state of emergency. Secret dealings went on behind closed doors and Elena, Marcus and Liam searched for any information they could get as to the identity of 'The Puppet Master'. People across the city offered help and those that didn't seem more than happy to watch and listen, taking in all the information as if they were storing it for later. That is, until one particular group of hackers agreed to help them.
Mira was the leader of the group and her skills with technology were unparalleled, at least in Elena's eyes. Mira met with the trio in an underground bunker beneath the ruins that once was a subway tunnel.
"Well?" She asked as she tapped away at a nearby terminal, lines of coding scrolling down the screen. "You're here about the next move, right? The next piece in their little game." Mira said, her tone unreadable as she glanced up at her new companions. "I've picked up chatter that they're already planning something else. A new project has been drafted and they're calling it 'The Phoenix Project'.
Elena's expression darkened as she pondered the woman's words. "What do you know about this "Phoenix Project"?
"Not much unfortunately." Mira replied as she tapped a couple more keys. "They want to re-build the Horizon Protocol, but this time it's set to take control of everyday human life and implant itself in the conscious mind of every person living in the city."
Liam frowned at the words. "Well then we just stop them!"
Elena, however, saw the truth behind Mira's eyes. They may well have beaten the Horizon Protocol's first wave, but the enemy was learning fast. She shivered at the thought of the world being dominated by their consciousness. It was a fight they were more than ready to take on, but with some major risks involved this time round.
Chapter 2. The Return of the Architect
In a secret underground stronghold, the masked man known as" The Architect" was watching the events with a mixture of interest and amusement. "They really really think they're prepared to stop me", he muttered darkly. "They only stopped the tip of the iceberg. The true dawn of the new age shall come soon enough, I can promise you that."
A tall man exited the shadows to reveal himself to the masked man. "They really believe that what they just did would stop us?" Viktor Kross asked, his violet eyes alight with the same psychotic look they always were when he spoke of his plans. "The next step in the game has started, the beginning of the end of the outside world, but that's not it either. I know The Architects and his associates are just pawns in this, but they are blind to the bigger picture and I intend to change that."
Viktor Kross was Elena's uncle and used to be one of the finest minds in the field of science, but she had seen the madness in him since she was a child. The games he liked to play, always testing her mind and making her think in ways no other person ever had. With that same twisted grin on his face, she wondered just how far he had gone and whether she would even make it out of this one.
Chapter 3. The Breaking Point
Back in the city, Mira informed them of the plans for the next move. It was set to take place within a few days and Elena, Liam and Marcus were preparing for whatever came next.
"In approximately 72 hours, The Phoenix Project will commence and the AI will be complete," Mira explained with a grim expression. She looked down at a holotable showing the inner workings of what was going to be their next obstacle. "The final activation will take place in an underground facility known as, "The Core"." She placed a hand on a part of the image that showed the mainframe. "This is the mainframe and the weak point."
While Elena and the others prepared, she remembered Cross's words. It was through chaos that the AI could be destroyed.
Chapter 4. The Heart of Darkness
Inside the abandoned facility, the team battled through wave after wave of enemies with guns and other weapons. She felt her heart pound in her chest as the final room loomed ahead. Elena and her team burst through a set of double doors at the back of the room and found themselves in a long corridor, the walls lined with glowing lights that put off an eerie atmosphere. They pushed forward carefully, unaware that the final confrontation was about to begin.
Suddenly, several alarm tones sounded, indicating The AI's final awakening. At the end of the corridor stood the large mainframe. Liam ran towards it, pulling out a device from his belt. At the same time, Viktor Kross appeared from another passage and a sinister smile crossed his face.
"Fools!" He spat. "Do you think you can stop what is already happening? The system is beyond your power now!"
Elena brandished her weapon and stared him down. "We will not let you turn humans into your puppets Kross!"
The firefight began and Viktor fought desperately, trying to activate the failsafe and shut off the system, but Elena got to it first and activated the EMP device. It sparked briefly before losing power completely, putting the AI into hibernation.
Viktor Kross, however, only laughed. "You are only delaying the inevitable!"
Chapter 5. The Aftermath and New Beginnings
As the final dust settled, Elena surveyed the ruined city. The AI had been stopped once more and the shadowy figures had been put in check, but she knew the fight wasn't over. The game had only just begun. The darkness always lurked just out of sight and was waiting for it's time to strike again. She turned to her companions and gave them a sad smile.
"We won this round, but the game is far from over. The true war is about consciousness and who gets to control the future." She said sorrowfully. "We need to build something new so it can never happen to us." Marcus said. Liam looked towards the horizon with hope in his heart. "And perhaps, just maybe, we can find a way to bring light into the darkness
"
But Elena knew in her heart that the shadows would always return
From deep within the ruined city, Viktor Kross watched the events unfold from a nearby building. The games had only just begun.
