Fiction Book Summary and Paraphrase: "The New Player" Novel by Various Authors Essay
I. Chapter 1: The Safe House
The safe house’s interior was brightly lit by the multiple computer screens that were fixated on Marcus. In front of him, the data stolen from The Alfa’s database was chaotic. Liam’s unconscious body was attached to an array of cables and other contraptions rigged up by Elena, who was intensely focused on studying the data. Outside, the storm clouds that rolled over the city’s rooftops had dumped a moderate amount of rainfall over the landscape. The faint swish and drizzle of water was accompanied by various sounds made by traffic and vehicles outside.
Marcus pulled some strands of his hair in frustration. “We are sitting ducks here. Viktor gets us every time.”
Elena looked away from her screen, her expression grim “What you think this data is for? There is a bigger conspiracy going on here than either of you would believe. I have uncovered some frightening information.”
He clenched his fists. “Tell me.”
His eyes were dark as he stared at Liam, whose eyelids fluttered open revealing exhausted eyes. “They are turning people into monsters,” said Liam.
Elena moved closer to him, her eyes narrowing. “Did they give you any information? What’s their endgame with that?”
Shaking his head, Liam responded, “Nothing at all. But I know they are going somewhere. Their numbers are growing, and I think there is some military base somewhere else. That’s where they are taking those people.”
“Where do you think their leader might be?” Asks Elena.
“All I know is that there’s a council,” says Liam. “They are running this ring of people, but the leader is Viktor.”
Chapter 5: The New Player
From the rooftop’s highest corner, Viktor Kross peered down over the city skyline, the stormy clouds reflecting in his intense gaze. He tapped the glass windowpane in impatience; meanwhile, in another part of town, the same sight was being witnessed by Viktor’s trusted right-hand man.
“The operation has been compromised. Drake and Vasquez have escaped. Not only that, they have managed to steal some vital intelligence.” Reports Viktor over the communicator.
“Viktor, I want the doctor dead and whatever other intelligence the two may possess erased.” Says the unknown sender.
“I will not fail you,” promises Viktor.
As he walks away from the edge, his communicator lets out a crackling noise. Back in the base, Elena’s data had given them an inside look into Viktor’s operations and, importantly, his location: the large underground facility.
With the help of some information stolen from the vault, the trio was planning on striking right at Viktor’s base. It was Marcus, Elena, and Liam, each preparing for the fight ahead.
The tunnel walls were lined with a network of reinforced steel, copper pipes, and various other vessels that pulsed with strange energy. As the trio crept through the darkness, lights flickered on, revealing vast chambers and long hallways. The distant sound of machinery and electrical hum vibrated across the stone floor. After several long hours of navigating the tunnels and evading sentries and detection drones, they came across a heavily guarded door.
Elena expertly entered the passcodes she had earlier stolen on her end, and soon the heavy metal door slid open to reveal a large room. The trio slowly walked in, their eyes widening at the sight before them: rows upon rows of human test subjects and machines, all connected by an intricate network of wires and tubes.
“Is this the worst thing humans could come up with?” Liam asked in horror.
Liam and Elena, wide-eyed, stared into the eyes of countless screaming victims. They were horrified at the atrocities these people had suffered.
Suddenly, the room was filled with the sound of mechanical movements as soldiers surrounded the trio and aimed their guns at them. “I would lower your weapons if I were you,” says Marcus. “Not one move. Not yet. I want you all to wait,” said Elena in a commanding tone. “We need to find out where their control center is located.”
Suddenly a man appeared before the trio, his sharp eyes scanning over the three intruders. “So, you mean to stop us right here, huh?” says the tall man. “I’m sorry, but that’s not an option. My name is Dr. Malachai, and you are interfering with operations I’ve spent my life putting together.”
“What makes you think all of these people have no choice in this?” asks Elena.
Malachai turns around, revealing a grim expression. “You’ve no idea what you are dealing with do you? These poor souls are all enhanced and turned into soldiers. The Alfa has promised them a better, stronger life free from their oppressors.”
“Sounds like bull–,” begins Liam. He is interrupted as Malachai suddenly pulls out a strange device. A faint whirring noise fills the room as the trio instinctively covers their noses and mouths. The sudden wave of nausea and dizziness overcomes them as they are forced to try and fight through the effects of the gas.
Chapter 7: The Fight for Humanity
When they finally came too, they were in a sterile medical examination room. Malachai stood over them, a smug grin plastered across his face.
“As you can see, my dear children; you are weak things. The New World Order will come for all of you in due time.” Says Malahai with a sneer. “But, as it turns out, you’re lucky enough to be in the hands of one of the finest scientists that the Alfa has to offer.”
Elena narrowed her eyes. “Your services will not be necessary. We come for these people!”.
With that, Elena and Marcus pounced, and Malahai quickly became preoccupied with keeping them off him. With Liam at the console, he was just about to send a code into the mainframe servers to halt the program. Elena was struggling with Malachai to reach the door to the chamber, but as soon as she reached for the handle, her comm-link receiver crackled to life. On the other end, Liam’s voice quietly spoke into Elena’s ear.
“We are so close! Wait while I finish this one last task!” says Liam.
Meanwhile, back in the facility, Malachai was trying to shake Marcus off of him. “What makes you think that I should stop this ‘New World Order?’ Humanity will perish by its own doing. You cannot stop progress from happening!”
Elena smirks. “Humanity is not about being gods and playing gods. It is about faith and choice! This is not humanity; it is fascism with a new face.” Just then, the alarm in the facility went off. As Malachai’s eyes widened in horror, the virus finished installing itself in the system, locking it down and shutting everything off.
The trio finally exited the facility through the storm and ran back the same way they came. Even though they were still on edge, none of the guards or sentries they passed recognized them. As they ran, the facility behind them began shaking and exploding as it collapsed in on itself. When the trio reached the end of the tunnel, they jumped into their waiting transport, speeding away to safety and freedom. Their breath was heavy with exhaustion as the wreckage of The Alfa’s facility erupted around them.
While they were driving away, Liam turned to the others, “There is more. The data on that drive indicates the presence of a secret council. Apparently, Viktor is working with a group of high-profile politicians and industry CEOs. They hold all the strings, and Viktor is just the mouthpiece.”
Elena nods. “I knew there was something going on in the government. This changes everything. We have to go to the authorities. I just don’t know whom I can really trust.”
Marcus clenches his jaw, already thinking of a way to confront The Alfa and its secret council. “Then we will take this and show the world what it is dealing with!”
Epilogue: A New Dawn
The pale morning sun rose over the distant horizon, sending shadows racing across the uneven, rocky terrain. Somewhere underground, below the bustling metropolis of Manhattan, the storm clouds threatened to break open with new life. Meanwhile, up above, Viktor Kross stood on his rooftop, watching the morning news. As the images of the ruined base played on the television, he smiled.
“Then let’s see how long they can live in this world of theirs,” he murmurs, watching the sunrise.
