Chapter 2

Cayden could see that Ava meant what she said just by the laughter before the statement so he decided that they strike out both the third and the fourth term of the contract. “ Let’s just strike out both the third and the fourth term.”, he said knowing fully well he was not going to heed it. Cayden is a control freak and he has always had control over everything and anyone who has been a part of his life. He told his lawyer everything he wanted to see in the contract so whether Ava liked it or not, he was going to abide by them. He just struck them out by word of mouth and just an ink from Ava’s pen. “ You can continue. Okay. 5. Party B has to move in with Party A. 6. Both parties will have their separate rooms at Party A’s residence. 7. Both parties must look and act like a couple in public. 8. Both parties’ families are not supposed to meddle in the affairs of the marriage. 9. No individual has to know about the contract.” Ava paused and looked at Cayden with a puzzled expression, “ Why can’t I tell anyone about this contract? What if it gets to the point where I need someone to talk to? I can’t just bottle everything up. I would lose my mind.”, she thought. “ Can I know why nobody needs to know about it? I know both our families don’t have to know about the contract but at least we both have friends or a friend that is close to us and that person needs to know about it. They are the only ones who can help us if things are going sideways. People talk. I don’t want anyone blabbing about it. What if our families hear about it? That’s even a wrong question for me to ask. What if my family hears about it? If they do, this contract will be terminated. Why did you reframe the question? Because your family needs the money I’m going to pay you. I know a lot about you and your family that’s why I chose you for the contract. I know you need the money as much as I need the marriage. You don’t want your father to go to jail. Do you?” Ava fumed with anger but decided to keep calm because even though what Cayden said was hurtful and a little rude, it was the truth. A bitter one as such. “What I’m trying to say is that we both need people to make our relationship look like a good one. We need to show our families that we have something going that is why we decided to get married. What if a family member decides to ask our close friends how we met and how things started between us, don’t you think that will be the end of us? That makes sense. I’m going to inform my best friend, Ethan about it. He’s also my secretary. I’m also going to inform Annisa about it. She’s my best friend. We need to get a good story for them to say in case they are being asked about us. I met you at La Lo La rooftop restaurant. I fell in love with you. It was love at first sight. That’s the story. That’s so lame. You frequent La Lo La rooftop restaurant and that is my workplace. You fell in love with me the first time I served you. You made sure I served you every time you came to the restaurant. You couldn’t keep your feelings to yourself anymore so you decided to ask me out and I accepted your feelings. We have been together for four months. That is the story we are going with. That’s very good. How did you just make up a story? I didn’t just make it up, I have been thinking about it for some time. Okay, that’s good. I’m not done reading the contract but I have skimmed through. I don’t like the tenth term. I cannot be a stay-at-home wife. I will die of boredom. At least let me do one part-time job, please. Do you want to taint my image? Do you know who I am? My wife cannot do part-time jobs. She cannot work for anybody. It’s just a contract. I won’t be a real wife to you so I don’t see why I can’t do my part-time job in peace. When we go to the court and we get married, we are going to sign the certificate of marriage which signifies that you are my wife. Till we divorce two years later, you are going to stay at home and be a housewife and that’s final.” A part of Ava wanted to just cancel the contract and walk away at this point but the other part of her was keeping her in shape. If she decides to cancel the contract and walk away, it means she has decided to let her Dad go to jail. She decided to give in. “ It’s just two years. It will pass by so fast and I wouldn’t even realize it. It’s all good. I will be okay.”, she thought. “ I have heard you. I will be a stay-at-home wife. I don’t have money so I can’t breach the contract so don’t worry about the last term and condition of the contract. That’s good to know. Can I sign? Yeah sure. Okay.” Ava signed the deal and they both shook hands. They ordered something to eat after the signing of the contract. After eating, Ava had to rush home to get ready for her third shift for the day because it was almost time for her shift so she told Cayden and he offered to take her home. She declined but he insisted so she accepted. “ Shall we? Yes, we shall.” They both stood up with Ava leading the way as they vacated the premises. Ava sat in Cayden’s car and he drove off to her house. On the way, Ava told Cayden about introducing him officially to her parents on the weekend and he agreed. They got to her place and she got down. “ Thanks for the ride. You’re welcome. See you on Saturday. Alright Bye.” They exchanged words and Cayden took off.
