Most writers already know three-act structure, but it doesn’t hurt to review the basics. Here’s a quick review of Syd Field’s three-act paradigm. His book, Screenplay, is a classic text on the topic. (Appendix F)
Act I The Set Up: Introduces setting, characters, and the main story conflict or inciting incident that provokes a change in the main character’s routine. (The beginning of the story’s problem.)
Plot Point 1: The first major turning point or event that changes the course of the story and moves the characters into Act II.
Act II Confrontation: The main character (MC) struggles to achieve his/her goal amid ever increasing obstacles.
Midpoint or Point of No Return: Occurs middle of Act II where MC makes a commitment to complete the journey, achieve the goal, etc. and moves forwar
