Fiona’s POV.
The Hall was silent for a minute and the rest of the Chiefs in council walked round the body of the Alpha king in circles while the rest of us watched. It was like a mighty wind had washed off the joy of the entire City as the mourning sank deep into our hearts.
The Corpse of the Alpha king was carried from the center of the Royal court out to the cemetery to be buried and as the custom demands, those who dug the grave of the Alpha king were the only ones to see him enter the ground, and Ragnar wasn’t a part of them so he watched in tears as his father was carried in the transparent coffin by four Werewolf guards.
Lord Kieran, The Lead chief in the council and Beta of the pack stood out and held him by the shoulder while he cried.
“You don’t have to be sober all day, your coronation as Alpha comes up soon.”
Ragnar folded his arms and his eyes filled with tears turned to him.
“What if I am not ready?”
“Don’t bother much, you aren’t alone, you’ve got me, you’ve got them,”
He swayed his hands at us and the rest of the people who were there present.
“I will see you soon Boy, I feel your pain, most times life happens to us, I should address the pack at once.
He begun
“My dear brothers, Sisters, and friends, I know how we all feel. I must confess right here and now that outside the chief mourner here today, who happens to be the Alpha prince, son to the late Alpha king, Ragnar, I am the one who grieves the most here. It is on this note that I stand here now, on the mantle as the Beta of the Pack and lead chief in council, urging us all to be strong and have faith, the enemy is nigh and trust me, they are watching. It wouldn’t look so nice to harbor or showcase any symptom of fear for that is the greatest weakness a nation or pack can exhibit.
People die every day, it could be your turn tomorrow, and maybe it could also be mine. The most important thing here is that we should always be ready. I recall after one of the sessions the Alpha had with the Members of the wolf council, he asked me a question; in his very words, he said; What Legacy would you love to leave behind?”
I thought for a while but later gave out an answer, you know what I answered, I told him, ‘Your legacy.’
He felt kind of confused at first but asked me again and I gave out the same answer, you know why I chose to leave behind the Legacy of the Alpha king?
Take a look at his life, he has a life of service, a life devoted to humanity, all he wanted for the next person beside him, be it big or small, weak or strong, rich or poor; he had always…”
While he spoke, Ragnar from my viewpoint felt uncomfortable and walked out during the speech. Ellen and I walked behind him outside to where he sat by the roundabout on the premises.
“Ragnar? Ragnar.” I Called and hastened my steps towards him alongside Ellen. He sat on the concrete there and had both hands on his jaws. His eyes were all reddish and he couldn’t give a reply to us.
“Honey Come on, you didn’t need to Leave the speech that way, It’s your Dad’s Funeral and all you have to do at least is show some respect to the memory service that’s holding right now.”
“What are you trying to say? Huh? What the f**k! Are you mother fucker Trying to say!?” He yelled as he stood to his feet and moved in my direction like he wanted to take revenge on me as the actual killer of his late father.
“Ragnar, Please, Stop.” I cautioned but he kept on coming closer and never retired, my friend Ellen had to come in.”
“Ragnar, Please, don’t…” He used his fist and hit her on her left Face and she fell to the ground, right there she began shifting into her wolf but I came in between and tamed her.
“Stop this! Both of you! We just finished laying someone from the pack to rest.”
I carried her and showcased my unacceptance of the whole drama which almost took place there, Ragnar kept quiet and knelt on the ground crying bitterly like a baby as he apologized while doing this.
“I’m Sorry, Please I am, I don’t know what has come over me.”
We both watched him cover his face with his hands in shame. I felt pity on him as poured out his heart.
“Seems I would get to leave the both of you at this point,” Ellen said as she had one last glance at him before she walked out.
I sat close to him on the ground now.
“Baby? Baby.”
“I laid my hands on Ellen, I laid my hands on one I could call, sister.”
“Look, don’t go so hard on yourself, I know it would seem a little bit hard to take in but I want you to understand one thing. Just as Lord Kieran said, you aren’t alone in this journey. You have to cheer up, even if everyone is against you, I never will.” I had my hand round him.
“Did you listen to what Lord Kieran said out there? Like my father died a natural death, I know my dad didn’t, someone is responsible and that person must be found, even if the rest of eh pack wouldn’t, I would, and trust me, when I am ready to go into an investigation…”
“Calm your nerves wolf, everything will be alright, I just trust you will be fine, don’t say much, let’s head back into the royal court, the people need to see their future Alpha King, they need you.”
I stood him up and just as we were about to head into the Royal court, he turned to me and gave me the shock of my life
.
“Fiona?”
“yes?”
Now that was what he usually called me each time he wanted to say something serious; ‘Fiona’.
“Have you got your wolf yet?”
I exhaled.
“No Honey, Not yet.”
“I think that may tend to impede our future because as the code says, I can’t be crowned without picking a mate, A mate with a wolf.”
