The morning after I said yes felt like the morning after a car crash.
Silent. Bruised. And everyone was staring.
I woke up in the guest room. Separate rooms. Like I asked.
But at 3AM I’d heard footsteps. Stopped outside my door.
Then nothing.
Caelen was already in the kitchen when I came out.
Coffee. Two mugs.
Newspaper on the counter.
Front page: _DRAYCE HEIR TO MARRY VALE SCANDAL. WEDDING IN 7 DAYS._
He didn’t look up. “Sleep?”
“Barely,” I said.
He slid a mug to me. Black.
“Good. We have a lot to do.”
I sat across from him. “About that. 7 days? That’s insane.”
“My father’s funeral is in 5,” he said. “And the board meets in 7.
If I’m not married by then, they vote me out. And they freeze all assets.
Including the ones paying your debt.”
Of course. Everything was a deadline with him.
“Who’s forcing you?” I asked.
“My mother. The board. The ghost of my father.”
He finally looked at me. Dark circles under his eyes.
“And you. You said yes.”
I wrapped my hands around the mug. “I didn’t know it would be this fast.”
“You didn’t ask,” he said. Echoing last night.
We stared at each other.
This was going to be hell.
“Fine,” I said. “7 days. What’s first?”
“A ring,” he said. “Then a dress. Then damage control.”
He stood. “Get dressed. We’re going to Drayce Jewelers in an hour.”
“Alone?”
“No,” he said. “With security. And with the press.
If we’re doing this, we’re doing it loud.”
Drayce Jewelers was a nightmare.
Flashbulbs. Microphones.
_“Seren! Is it true you’re pregnant?”_
_“Caelen! Did you force her?”_
_“How much did the ring cost?”_
I kept my head down. Red dress again. He picked it out.
Of course he did.
Caelen’s hand was on my lower back the whole time. Possessive.
Guiding.
Inside, it was worse. Cold. Marble. And silence.
A woman in a suit approached. “Mr. Drayce. Ms. Vale.
We’ve pulled options based on your... timeline.”
She laid out 5 rings.
All of them were huge. Obnoxious.
All of them said _I own you_.
I hated all of them.
Caelen picked up the biggest one. 6 carats. Emerald cut.
“Try this,” he said.
I held out my hand. He slid it on.
It was heavy. Too heavy.
“How much?” I asked quietly.
“4.2 million,” the woman said. Proud.
I almost laughed. “For a rock?”
“For a statement,” Caelen corrected. “Take it off.”
I did.
He walked past all 5. To the back wall.
There was one ring in a case by itself.
Simple. White gold. Thin band. One small diamond.
Not flashy. Not Drayce.
“What’s this?” I asked.
“My mother’s,” he said. “Before she became... this.”
He opened the case. Took it out.
“Try it.”
I did.
It fit. Perfectly.
And it didn’t feel like chains.
Caelen stared at it on my finger for a long time.
Then at me.
“Keep it,” he said. “Unless you hate it.”
“I don’t,” I whispered.
“Good.”
He paid. No card. No fuss.
And the whole time, I felt like I was making another deal.
The car ride back was quiet until my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello, Seren.”
Maya.
“Don’t,” I said.
“Don’t what? Congratulate you?” She laughed. “I saw the ring.
Very... understated. For a Drayce wedding.
Tell me, did he tell you about the prenup?”
“What prenup?”
“The one that says if you cheat, you get nothing.
If he cheats, you get everything.
If you leave, you owe him 50 million.”
I hung up.
Caelen was watching me. “What?”
“Nothing,” I said.
“Seren.”
“Maya called. About a prenup.”
He sighed. Rubbed his temples. “We’ll talk about it later.”
“When is later? Before or after I sign my life away?”
“Before,” he said. “I’m not a monster.”
“You could’ve fooled me.”
We got back to the penthouse and Derek was waiting in the lobby.
With a lawyer.
And a folder.
“Caelen Drayce,” the lawyer said. “Cease and desist.
Mr. Hale is filing for emotional damages and defamation.”
Caelen didn’t even slow down. “File it.
And tell him if he comes within 500 feet of her again,
I’ll file for harassment.”
He pulled me past them.
Derek grabbed my arm. “Seren, please. 5 minutes.”
“Let go,” I said.
“Seren”
Caelen stepped between us. “I said let go.”
Derek did.
In the elevator, I was shaking.
Caelen noticed. “Hey.”
He touched my chin. Made me look at him.
“You’re okay.”
“I’m not,” I said. “I just agreed to marry a man I don’t trust,
while my ex tries to sue me and my ex-bestfriend tries to ruin me.
I’m not okay.”
He was quiet. Then: “Then let me make it okay.”
“How?”
“By being honest. For once.”
We got inside. He didn’t turn on the lights.
Just stood by the window. City behind him.
“The emails Derek has are real,” he said. “Your dad and I were partners.
We built the company from nothing.
Then he found out I was sleeping with his wife.”
The air left my lungs.
“My mom?” I whispered.
“No,” Caelen said fast. “His second wife. Before her.
It was 12 years ago. Messy. Stupid.
When your dad found out, he drained the accounts and disappeared.
Left me holding the debt. Left you holding the fallout.”
I sank onto the couch. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I wanted you to hate him, not me,” he admitted.
“And because the second I saw you, I didn’t want to be the villain anymore.”
“That’s not how it works,” I said.
“I know,” he said. “But it’s how I feel.”
He crouched in front of me.
Took my hand. The one with his mother’s ring.
“I can’t undo what my family did to yours.
Or what your dad did to mine.
But I can give you a choice now. Real choice.”
He pulled a paper from his pocket.
Not a contract. A letter. Handwritten.
_“Seren,
If you want out, say the word. Tonight.
I’ll pay the debt anyway. No strings.
And you never have to see me again.
But if you stay... stay because you want to.
Not because you have to.
- C”_
My eyes burned. “Why?”
“Because I’m tired of winning things that hate me,” he said.
“And I’m tired of pretending I don’t want you to choose me.”
The room was so quiet I could hear my heart.
I read the letter twice.
Then I folded it. Put it in my pocket.
“I’m not leaving,” I said.
Caelen exhaled. Like he’d been shot and survived.
“Good,” he said. “Because the wedding planner is coming in 20.
And my mother wants to meet you for dinner.”
He stood. “And Seren?”
“What?”
“Wear red.”
I threw a pillow at him. He caught it. Smiled.
A real one. Small. Tired.
But real.
Dinner with Mrs. Drayce was exactly as bad as I thought.
Pearls. Wine. Judgement.
“Ms. Vale,” she said. “My son has... poor taste.”
“Mother,” Caelen warned.
“And this ring,” she said, eyeing my hand. “That was mine.”
“I know,” I said. “Caelen gave it to me.”
Her mouth thinned. “How sentimental.”
Halfway through, my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
_“See you at the altar. I’m wearing white.
Love, Maya xoxo”_
I dropped the fork.
Caelen saw. “What?”
“Nothing,” I lied.
But it wasn’t nothing.
Because Maya was going to be at the wedding.
And Derek was going to be there too.
And someone sent me that text last night.
7 days.
A ring that didn’t feel like chains.
And a house full of enemies.
Betrayed by love.
Ruined by choice.
And I just chose the most dangerous man in the room.
