Chapter 3 Eva
Marcus had been less than impressed with the blurry video that I recorded on my phone. He couldn’t tell who or what the figure was and asked me to continue investigating. I had returned home thirty minutes ago and was sitting on my couch wrapped in a soft fuzzy blanket and watched Netflix as I drank a glass of blood.
I felt my phone vibrate and I picked it up off the cushion next to me. I received a text from Lilura about meeting soon, it read; “Still on for book club at Preservation Pub at 6:30?”
“Yes!” I quickly replied.
This is exactly what I needed a distraction from Andrew’s death, some perspective. It's like taking a shower, I always get the best ideas or solve problems by doing something different.
The episode I was watching on Netflix ended and I turned off my Tv and folded up my blanket draping it across the back of my couch. I picked up my glass and rinsed it putting it in the dishwasher, which was now full of dishes. I put in the soap and started the dishes. I began wiping the counters and my dining table straightening things as I went. I checked my pantry for the human food that Lilura liked and checked my fridge to make sure nothing had expired. Only a few of the items had, so I wrote them on my grocery list. I pulled out a fresh set of bedsheets and refreshed them in the dryer while I unmade my bed and put them in the washer. When my fresh sheets were refreshed, I remade my bed. I went into my bathroom and straightened up putting out fresh towels and cleaning everything. I liked keeping my home tidy and I always cleaned before I knew someone might stay the night. It was the decent thing to do.
Once I finished cleaning, I appraised my appearance in the mirror. My long dark hair was slightly disheveled, so I brushed it. I went light with my makeup when I woke up, so I darkened it for evening, making my blue eyes pop and I applied a dark wine-colored lipstick to complete the look. I decided to leave on my short boho dress and exchanged my sandals for three-inch wedges.
I checked the time and it was already six twenty, just enough time to walk to Preservation Pub in Market Square. It was about a five-minute walk from my apartment. I grabbed my phone and purse and exited my apartment locking the door. I rode my elevator to the ground floor and made my way to Market Square. Market Square was busy, there were locals and tourists all wandering around looking at the different menus posted at the different restaurants and bars. Occasionally I would get a whiff of a wolf, they had a freshly bathed dog undertone with whatever scent they preferred as their laundry detergent and aftershave or perfume. Fae smelled like nature to me, each one a different tree or flower smell. Witches smell human but with a distinctive underlying energetic smell that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.
Today I could smell all those scents coming from inside Preservation Pub. I wasn’t surprised, this is a very popular local spot for humans and supernatural. The vibe of this place is amazing, it’s a three-story bar that has a rooftop deck and live music on the weekends, which it just so happens to be Friday, so we get to enjoy whoever will be playing. I entered the pub and looked around for Lilura, she wasn’t here yet, so I walked to the bar to order drinks for us. The bartender IDed me, and I pulled out my license. Ever since showing ID at bars became mandatory, every place I went I was ID, the curse of being turned at twenty-four and being short I guess, eternal IDing. For Lilura I ordered her a White Russian and for myself Whiskey with seven-up. With drinks in hand, I found a table with sightlines to the door so Lilura could see me when she entered.
I texted her. “I’m here and I have your drink. Are you close?”
She texted back immediately. “Yes, be there in a minute.”
I mixed my drink with my straw to make sure the seven-up and whiskey were perfectly mixed. When I was satisfied, they were mixed I took a sip. It tasted perfect, just the way I like it. Lilura entered wearing a navy blue dress printed with small yellow flowers. The dress fit well on her slim petite figure and reached just below her knees with buttons running down the front. Her fire-red hair wrapped in a low bun with strands of hair falling out. Our eyes met she smiled at me. I could tell something was wrong, the look in her eyes, was haunted. I smiled back at her and she sat and took a big drink of her White Russian.
“Are you alright?” I asked her.
“Just peachy. A witch was murdered.” She told me.
“I’m sorry, that’s terrible!”
“It was. Both of her hands were sawed off. I don’t know who would do something like that to her.”
“Wow, are you sure you want to do book club, we can just go back to my apartment?”
“No, I need to have some fun and forget about my poor sister. What’s new with you?” Lilu asked.
“A vampire was found murdered; his fangs were missing. I have been investigating his death since three this morning. It’s strange, he was just dead and fangless there were no other marks on him. Marcus thinks its wolves, but I’m not convinced. Let’s not talk about anyone’s death anymore! That topic is officially off done being talked about.” I told her and took a sip of my drink.
At this moment I was very disappointed that alcohol doesn’t affect me as much as I wanted right now. As a waitress passed, I ordered another round and a couple shots. That’s what this night needed to up the fun level.
“So, have you figured out who has been leaving you those flowers?” I asked Lilu
“No, not yet. It could be a Fae. I know a couple that wander my woods. I’m thinking maybe a brownie? Who knows? It is nice to get a little beauty in the mornings though. Are you and Marcus still in an off phase?”
“Yes. He can be so frustrating at times; he is the one that turned me so we could be a family. Now he wants to try and be with different people again. I swear we do this every twenty years. I don’t know how I feel anymore, do I love him or don’t I? Is it because he turned me? At this point I think space is what I need,” I told her exasperatedly.
“I see, that’s probably a good decision. You have been together living and relationship-wise for a long time. Maybe you both need space to figure out what you want.”
“Your right, it’s just that he knows me so well. He knows my pain and shares it. I don’t know that I would have such a strong connection with anyone else.”
“That’s true. There’s a lot of history there, and a lot of baggage. It might be easier to move on with someone else. Didn’t you tell me that he is the only one whoever tries to be with someone new maybe you need to do that.”
The waitress brought our drinks and shots. We both took our shots and she took the glasses away. I grabbed my straw and began mixing my newest Whiskey seven.
“You may be right.”
I could see the mischievous glint in her eye, she had an idea.
“Tomorrow we are going to Aura the supernatural club so you can meet some hunky vampire or other supernatural and get some… satisfaction.” Lilura excitedly told me.
“I don’t know.”
“Come on, please! I want you to let loose and have some fun!”
“Alright, alright, you have convinced me.”
We continued to chat and drink. Lilura went off to the bathroom and as I was sitting at the table mixing my newest drink, I heard a sharp inhale of breath and turned to see a woman hold her cheat above her heart tears came to her eyes. I listened in on her conversation with her friends. I heard her say, “I think my mate just died.” Her friends rushed her out the door, as they passed, I could smell that they were werewolves. Lilura returned with a happy smile on her face. I didn’t want to ruin her night, so I kept what I heard to myself. I would tell her in the morning, something weird was definitely happening in the supernatural world a dead vampire, witch, and now a werewolf. It didn’t seem like a coincidence to me.
The waitress came around and we order some food and some water. Lilura and I continued to have a good time until she started yawning. I looked at the time, it was one in the morning. We paid our tab and walked with Lilura to where she parked her truck. It was in one of the garages. She handed me her keys and I drove us to my apartment. When we pulled up to the entrance a valet was there waiting for us. He took the keys and moved Lilura’s truck to our parking garage. Lilura and I entered my building and some of my clan greeted us as we walked past to my elevator. Once to my apartment, I let Lilura get ready for bed first and when she was passed out in my bed, I took off my makeup and changed into my pajamas then laid next to her.
The next morning around ten I was woken by the vibration of my phone. It was a call from the coroner and the lab tech. Lilura was still asleep, so I slipped out into my living room and answered the call.
“This is Eva.”
“Its Misty, and Lauren. We have the results for you from the autopsy. Andrew was injected with a paralyzing agent and Belladonna. Whoever did this really didn’t want Andrew to move around while they extracted his fangs.”
“Is there anything to tell us who did this?”
“No, there was no foreign DNA. I suspect whoever did this used gloves.”
“Do you think a werewolf did this?”
“Hard to say, but it’s definitely not typical for a werewolf to kill this way.”
“Alright, thank you,” I said and ended the call.
A few minutes later Lilura came out from my room and headed to my kitchen.
