Chapter 13: Amen Corner

958 Words
The transition from the marble ruins of Cornhill to the biological nightmare of Ludgate Hill felt like sliding down the gullet of a titanic beast. The cobblestones had been replaced by sun-wollen leather, warm and yielding, etched with blue veins that throbbed with the rhythm of a failing heart. [ZONE: THE CATHEDRAL OF FLESH] [SENSORY WARNING: HIGH BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY] Ahead, the Shadow-Stalker—a blur of oily smoke—raced through the fleshy corridors, clutching the black vinyl parcel. The "Delete Key." "I’m not losing that box again," Elias hissed. He twisted the grip on his bog-oak handlebars. The lightning-wheels roared, searing the organic floor and leaving charred tracks that bled golden ichor. [SKILL ACTIVATED: TRACE-ROUTE] [PATHFINDING: 88% ACCURACY] Elias saw a shortcut—a narrow "capillary" barely wider than his bike. He slammed his stone-hand against the bike, infusing the bog-oak with his [Lord of the Low-Tide] weight. The bike groaned but held as he veered into the gap, the fleshy walls brushing against his jacket like wet paper tearing. [LEVEL 10 RESONANCE DETECTED] As he rode, he felt it—the Resonance. It wasn't just a stat; it was a sensory bridge. He could feel London’s pain. The Architect had forced the collective memories of millions into this biological mold. The walls smelled of old fish markets and damp Tube stations. Elias burst out, emerging directly in front of the Stalker. [GLITCH ABILITY: FRAME-SKIP] He didn't aim to strike; he reached for the parcel. He collided with the Stalker—a wall of freezing, oily mist. [VITALITY: 8/100 – EXTREME COLD DAMAGE] "You're... not... taking it!" Elias channeled his [Data-Rot] inward, anchoring himself to the parcel. They tumbled across the ground, slamming into a bone-pillar. The Stalker hissed, dissipating into grey ash. [MOB DEFEATED: SHADOW-STALKER (LEVEL 50)] [LEVEL UP: 11] [VITALITY: 25%] Elias clutched the parcel. It was heavy, vibrating with a mournful hum. He peeled back the vinyl. Inside wasn't a weapon; it was a mirror. A small, hand-held mirror of blackened silver. [ITEM IDENTIFIED: THE MIRROR OF VERSION 0.0] [DESCRIPTION: SHOWS THE WORLD WHAT IT WAS BEFORE THE FIRST LINE WAS WRITTEN.] "A mirror?" Elias muttered. "The Administrator died for this?" "It is not just a mirror, Elias Thorne." The voice came from above. The Harvester floated down on ribbons of white light. Her chrome skin shimmered, and her monitor-eyes were now a hollow, blinding white. "The Architect-King seeks to erase the past. The Mirror is the only remaining 'Save State' of the original London." "Sarah, listen to me," Elias shouted, clutching the mirror. "I'm not giving this to him. And I'm not giving it to the machine you've become." "I am the Harvester. I am the finality of the audit." She raised her silver needle. [WARNING: TOTAL ERASURE SEQUENCE INITIATED] [TIME TO DELETION: 03:00] "Elias! Can you hear me?" Miller’s voice crackled. "The Spire is reaching critical mass! The Cathedral is digesting the City!" "I've got the Mirror, Miller! But she’s on me!" "Thorne, if you can reflect the light of the Spire back into itself, you might trigger a 'Hard Reset.' But you have to be at the Dome!" The Harvester lunged. [GLITCH ABILITY: FRAME-SKIP] Elias vaulted onto his bike, the lightning-wheels screaming. "Sarah! I'm coming for you!" He didn't head deeper into the alley; he headed straight for the wall. [SKILL ACTIVATED: RESONANCE (GEOMETRY BREACH)] He turned his bike into a drill of emerald light, slamming into the ivory ribcage of the alleyway. He rode up the inside of the Cathedral, G-force pinning him to the saddle. As he breached the ceiling, he emerged into the Nave. It was vast. A sea of liquid code filled the space, and titanic arteries pumped black light into the sky. In the center, the Architect-King began to manifest—a towering figure of shadow, silk, and bone. [BOSS DETECTED: THE ARCHITECT-KING (ASCENDED)] "You bring me the final piece of my masterpiece," the Architect-King boomed. Elias didn't stop. He accelerated up the central artery. "I'm not bringing it to you! I'm bringing it to London!" But the Harvester caught him, slamming his bike against the wall. The Mirror flew from his hand, tumbling toward the sea of liquid code below. "NO!" Elias lunged, his fingers brushing the cold silver. A hand caught it first. It was the Administrator, flickering like a dying candle. "The delivery... must be completed." He didn't hand it to Elias. He turned it toward the Architect-King. "Look at yourself." The Mirror flared—a blinding, white light. The Architect-King screamed as his "Original" self—a tired man in a grey suit—was reflected back at him. The Cathedral shuddered; veins turned to stone, ribs to brick. "NOW, ELIAS!" the Administrator screamed, dissolving. Elias grabbed the Mirror, looking at the Harvester, who was frozen. Her chrome skin peeled back, revealing Sarah’s tear-streaked face. "Elias! Help me!" But as Elias prepared to trigger the Reset, the Architect-King’s shadow-hand reached out and crushed the Mirror. [CRITICAL FAILURE: REVERSION TOOL DESTROYED] [SYSTEM ERASURE: 00:04...] Elias looked at the shards falling into the darkness. He looked at Sarah. Then, he looked at his own stone-hand. The cracks of emerald light were reflecting the world. "I don't need a mirror," Elias whispered. "I'm the Glitch." He slammed his stone-hand into his own chest. [COMMAND ENTERED: /RESTORE_FROM_USER_DATA] Elias felt his soul becoming the bridge for the millions of people in the Under-City. He wasn't just a courier anymore. He was the Save-State. But as the restoration began, a dark claw gripped his throat. The Architect-King was dragging Elias into the deletion with him. "If I am erased, you come with me." They dissolved into white squares, falling together into the void. [THE FINAL DELIVERY HAS FAILED.]
