*THE FIRST DATE AND THE FIRST LIE*

*CHAPTER 3: *POV: VEYLA* The frost on the roof was melting into my shoes. It was cold in a way that felt personal, like it was trying to get inside me. The words scrawled across the concrete were half-gone now, dripping down in thin lines. _CHOOSE WRONG AND I’LL TAKE THEM ALL._ Knox stood three feet away. He hadn’t moved since I read the message. His hands were in his pockets and his jaw was tight, like he was holding back something that would break him if he said it out loud. The emergency lights made shadows cut across his face. When he finally spoke, his voice was rough. Not angry. Just tired. "That wasn’t me." I believed him immediately. And that was the problem. Because if it wasn’t Knox, then it was someone else. Someone who knew about the 30 days. Someone who wanted me to fail before I even started. My phone buzzed in my hand. The light was too bright against the dark sky. __DAY 1. 22:15:00. COME DOWNSTAIRS. ALONE.__ I stared at the screen for a long time. _Is this a test? Is this a trap?_ I didn’t know which was worse. "Did you send that?" I asked without looking at him. "No." One word. No explanation. And somehow that made me trust him more. The elevator down felt like it took forever. We stood in opposite corners. He didn’t look at me. I didn’t look at him. But the air between us was heavy, full of things neither of us were saying. My heart was pounding and I hated that it wasn’t just from fear. Part of me was aware of him in a way I didn’t want to be. When the doors opened on the 90th floor, the office was dark. Emergency lights threw long shadows across the desks. It was empty. Evelyn was gone. Maeve and Dex were gone. The Ledger was gone. The only thing left was on the conference table. A single black candle. The flame was perfectly still, like it wasn’t affected by air at all. Next to it, written in ash in handwriting that looked exactly like mine, were two lines: _THE SEAL IS NOT A CURSE. IT’S A PRISON. AND YOU ARE THE KEY AND THE JAILER._ I reached out before I could stop myself. The ash was cold under my fingertips. Colder than it should’ve been. *POV: VALE* I watched them from the security room. Four screens in front of me. Four different angles of the same disaster. On screen 4: the roof, empty now. On screen 2: the elevator, both of them standing as far apart as possible. On screen 1: the conference room. Veyla staring at the candle. _This is dangerous. This is how it starts._ There were things we hadn’t told her yet. Things we were too scared to say out loud. Because once she knew, she couldn’t unknow it. A thousand years ago, the world wasn’t ending in 12 days. It was ending in 12 hours. Four plagues had hit at once. War had burned his own kingdom to the ground to stop an invasion. Famine had sold his people for sacks of grain. Pestilence had set fire to entire cities to burn out a sickness. And I... I had signed the death warrants for a million people to save ten million more. We were kings. And we were monsters. That was when she came to us. Veyla. Nineteen years old. The Oracle. She walked into the war room with no guards and no fear. She didn’t cry. She didn’t beg. She made a deal. > _"You’re going to destroy everything," she said. "So I’m going to bind you. Your power. Your life. Your soul. To my bloodline. For a thousand years. And in that time, you will learn how to be human again. Or you will sleep forever."_ The Seal wasn’t built to protect the world from us. That was the lie we told ourselves. _The Seal was built to protect us from ourselves._ Because if we were ever free, we would burn the world down to get her back. Every single time. That’s how the loop started. Every thousand years, the Seal weakens. Every thousand years, she’s reborn with no memory of us. Every thousand years, she has 30 days to choose one of us. If she chooses, three of us go back to sleep. One stays awake as her consort for the next millennium. If she doesn’t choose, we all wake up. And we finish what we started a thousand years ago. The problem was simple and cruel. _She always forgets. And we always remember._ My phone buzzed. Unknown number. _She’s learning too fast. Slow her down._ I deleted the message. My hands were shaking. *POV: KNOX* "The candle wasn’t here ten minutes ago," I said. My voice sounded strange in the quiet room. Veyla picked it up carefully. The flame didn’t burn her. It just sat there, reflected in her eyes and turning them gold for a second. The same gold mine had been earlier. "Who’s doing this?" she asked. Her voice was steady. But I could see her fingers trembling around the base of the candle. _Tell her. Tell her the truth about the Fifth._ _No. If I tell her, she’ll run. And then we’re all dead._ "I don’t know," I lied. I did know. We’d all agreed a thousand years ago to never speak his name. Conquest. The one erased from every holy book. He wasn’t about endings. He was about beginnings. About conquest. About taking what didn’t belong to him. And the only way he could take the world was if the cycle broke. If Veyla never chose. I took a step closer to her. She didn’t flinch. That was something. "Veyla," I said. "Do you feel anything? For any of us?" She looked up at me. Her eyes were red but dry. She’d cried all her tears already, maybe. "I feel anger," she said. "I feel trapped. I feel like I’m living in someone else’s nightmare and I can’t wake up. I don’t feel love." The words hit me harder than they should’ve. "That’s enough," I said finally. "For what?" "For day one." *POV: ZADE* I wasn’t supposed to be on the 90th floor. My day wasn’t for three more days. But I’d seen the candle on the cameras and I’d seen the words written in ash and something in my chest had snapped. _THE SEAL IS NOT A CURSE. IT’S A PRISON._ _Bullshit. It’s a curse. Because I remember what it felt like. A thousand years in the dark. Screaming her name until my throat was raw. Remembering everything while she forgot me every time._ The doors opened and Veyla walked in with Knox. Both of them looked exhausted. Like they’d been fighting something neither of them could name. "You’re not supposed to be together," I said, stepping out of the shadows. "We’re not," Knox said flatly. "We’re working." "On what? Falling in love?" I laughed, but it came out wrong. Brittle. "Good luck. She hates us." Veyla turned to me then. Slow. Like she was weighing every word before she let it out. "Then why are you here, Zade? If you think I hate you." The question hit me somewhere under my ribs. I shoved my hands in my pockets so she wouldn’t see them shake. "Because," I said, and my voice dropped. "Because last time you said my name at midnight. And I was the one who got to stay awake with you. For forty years." I looked up at her. "And they were the best forty years of my life. Even when you cried every night and I couldn’t make it better." The room went dead quiet. Knox didn’t move. Veyla’s breath caught. *POV: RIVEN* The hospital was hell. Beds lined the hallway. Kids with fevers. Old people coughing blood. This was what I was. This was Pestilence. And I couldn’t stop it because it was me. My phone buzzed. A picture message from a number I didn’t have saved. It was Veyla. On the roof with Knox. And behind them, in the glass reflection, was a fifth shadow. Tall. Wearing white. Holding reins. Smiling like he’d been waiting for this moment for a thousand years. _SHE DOESN’T REMEMBER ME. BUT I REMEMBER HER. AND I’M TIRED OF WAITING._ I threw the phone across the room. It shattered against the wall. A nurse jumped. I didn’t apologize. *POV: VEYLA* "Forty years?" The words felt too big in my mouth. Zade nodded once. He still wouldn’t meet my eyes. "Before you locked us all away again." "Why?" "Because you asked me to," he said. "You said, _‘stay, so I’m not alone.’_" _I don’t remember saying it. But why does my chest hurt like I did? Like there’s a wound there that never healed right?_ The candle flickered. The flame went from orange to black in a heartbeat. The temperature dropped so fast my breath fogged in front of me. A voice filled the room. Smooth. Royal. Amused. Like he owned the place and us in it. "Hello, Oracle." We all turned. Standing by the window was a man in a white suit. A small white horse pin on his lapel. Eyes like pale ice. He wasn’t one of the four. He was a fifth. "Conquest," Vale said from behind me. His voice was flat and cold. "You’re not supposed to exist." "I exist," the man said, smiling. "Because she forgot to lock me away too." He looked at me. And for half a second I felt it. Recognition. Like I’d known him before names, before time. "Veyla," he said. My name in his mouth felt wrong. "You have twenty-eight days. Choose me and I’ll give you the world. Choose one of them and I’ll take it." He snapped his fingers. The candle went out. Three seconds of darkness. My heart stopped. When the lights came back on, he was gone. But the Ledger was on the table. And in fresh, wet ink it said: _Day 1. Conquest has entered the game._ *POV: VALE* She was shaking. Not visibly. But I could see it in the way she held the pen. _Don’t touch her. If I touch her now, I’ll never let go._ "Don’t," I said instead. "Don’t even think about it." "Think about what?" she asked, still staring at the Ledger. "Choosing him," I said. "Because if you do, the other four of us die. And the world becomes his." "Who is he?" "The first Horseman," Riven said from the doorway. He looked pale and sick. "The one history erased. Conquest." Zade kicked the table. "So now we have to beat him too?" "No," I said. "We have to make her love one of us before she loves him." Veyla looked at all of us. Then down at the Ledger. _Day 1. Conquest has entered the game._ She picked up the pen. Her hand was steady. And she wrote: _Day 1. I don’t trust any of you._ She closed the Ledger with a snap that echoed in the room. Then she looked up at us. All four of us. And said the last thing I expected. "Fine. If this is a game, then we play by my rules. Day 2 starts tomorrow. And I’m picking who I see." She walked to the door. Paused. "And if any of you lie to me again... I’ll choose him." She left. The door closed. And in the silence, the candle that had gone out relit itself. To be continued...
