Chapter 3

Morning sunlight spilled into the room. I stretched my arm out and slowly adjusted to the bright light streaming through the window. The sight of his back in the kitchen warmed my heart. I climbed out of bed, wrapped my arms around his waist, and leaned fully against him. "Why aren't you leaving today?" I asked softly. "You trying to kick me out?" His voice was low and a little rough. "No. I'm really glad you stayed." I meant every word of it. Charles smiled, "Go wash up. Breakfast is ready." The table only had simple sandwiches and milk. Charles finished his meal in a hurry, then told me to move in with him. He added that he wouldn't be staying here most of the time. My father had passed away when I was little, and my mother cut off all contact with me after remarrying. I'd lived in the school dormitory all these years. Dorms didn't allow cats, so my cat, Flora, never had room to roam freely. Plus, this place was close to both my school and the hospital. I barely hesitated before agreeing to move in. I didn't have many belongings, so packing was easy. Still, it took several trips to move everything. By the time I finished the last load, night had fallen, so I told Elliot to head home early. I reached the front door and realized Elliot had forgotten to register my fingerprint. I could only get in by entering a passcode for now. Flora heard me outside and meowed repeatedly, greeting me from behind the closed door. I'd been worn out from the previous night's chaos and had no energy left after moving. Stuck outside the door, I stood frozen for a long time before I finally gathered my thoughts and called Elliot. Elliot apologized repeatedly on the line. "I'm so sorry. I completely forgot. The entry passcode is the original eight-digit birthday of the homeowner. Once you're inside, you can register your fingerprint and change the passcode through the control panel in the entryway." I hung up the phone and typed in a set of numbers on instinct. The security door beeped a warning, followed by a click from the built-in camera. A robotic system voice played. "Incorrect passcode. All wrong entries and facial footage have been recorded and sent to the central system. If you are not the owner of this residence, please leave immediately." I froze on the spot. My hand hovered mid-air above the keypad, and I had no idea what to do next. After a moment, I snapped out of it, rubbed my temples, and opened the search bar on my phone. I typed in Charles' full name to look up his personal information. His profile popped up right away on the screen. It read, "Date of birth: 07211993." I muttered the numbers to myself and entered them. The door unlocked successfully at last. Flora instantly jumped up into my arms, and I stroked her soft fur gently.
