Chapter 4

198 Words
I had been feeling much better lately. Even the senior lab colleague noticed and teased me. "Brenda, you look glowing these days. Someone's been taking good care of you." I laughed and argued lightly, then focused back on washing the reagent bottles. Then she smiled. "Wrap up early. Your boyfriend's waiting outside." I froze for a second and turned to look out. Through the clear glass, Charles stood outside the lab in casual clothes with his arms crossed. He held himself tall, and everyone walking by kept glancing his way. "Brenda, most of the time a butterfly is just a butterfly—it only flies. Not every single one stirs up a storm." Arnold's voice faded away. I stepped out and flipped off the lights. The lab sank into complete darkness. I lifted my eyes toward Charles. For a split second, my vision blurred when our gazes met. I pushed the fleeting feeling aside right away. I walked faster and faster until I broke into a run and threw myself into his arms. Rain poured all around us. His voice sounded muffled beneath the downpour, yet it was enough to make me hold tighter to that warm embrace.
