Chapter 8: Under the Eyes of the World

811 Words
Success no longer followed Lina quietly. It arrived with cameras, flashing lights, and headlines that carried her name across the city. Lina Sharma and Arjun Malhotra began appearing together in public—not deliberately, not dramatically, but naturally, as partners whose paths had become intertwined. Business dinners. Industry conferences. Panel discussions where Lina spoke with confidence and clarity, and Arjun sat beside her, watching with unmistakable pride. People noticed. They noticed the way Arjun pulled out her chair before sitting. The way Lina leaned toward him when she laughed. The way silence between them never felt awkward, only intimate. Whispers began to trail them like shadows. At first, Lina pretended not to hear them. Then came the day that changed everything. The press conference for Lina Designs & Co. was held in one of the city’s grandest halls. Banners draped in gold and ivory carried the company logo. Journalists filled the room, cameras poised, anticipation humming in the air. It wasn’t just a press conference. It was an award ceremony. Lina Sharma was being honored as The Most Successful Young Businesswoman of the Year. As her name was announced, applause erupted. Lina stood slowly, smoothing her sari, her hands steady though her heart raced. Arjun rose with her, his smile soft but proud. She walked to the podium under a storm of flashes. For a brief moment, she remembered Devgarh—the dusty lanes, the leaking roof, her mother’s tired hands. The promise she had made as a girl echoed in her ears. She took a breath and spoke. “I want to thank my family,” Lina said, her voice clear but emotional, “who always trusted my promises… and taught me that truth is not weakness, but strength.” Her parents sat in the front row, eyes shining. “They supported me when I had nothing,” she continued. “And they taught me to always stand by my word, no matter how hard the cost.” The room grew quiet. “I also want to thank my former boss,” Lina said, turning slightly toward Arjun, “who is now my business partner.” All eyes followed her gaze. “He believed in me when I had fallen,” she said softly. “When the world closed its doors, he did not ask me to explain my pain—he simply pushed me forward so I could shine.” Her voice trembled for the first time. “My success today,” she finished, meeting Arjun’s eyes, “I owe it to him.” Applause thundered through the hall. Arjun didn’t clap immediately. He simply looked at her, something raw and unguarded passing through his expression. After the ceremony, the press surged forward. Reporters surrounded Lina first, then quickly shifted toward Arjun. “Mr. Malhotra,” one called out, microphone extended. “Why did you help Ms. Lina when her career was at its lowest?” Arjun answered calmly. “Because I admired her. Her truthfulness. Her talent. She works with her whole heart.” Another reporter pushed forward. “Is that all? Or is there something more between you two?” Cameras zoomed in. “Are you a couple?” the reporter insisted. Arjun paused—not long enough to be suspicious, but long enough to be honest. “We are good friends,” he said. “Strong partners.” The reporter wasn’t satisfied. “And in the future?” Arjun smiled faintly. “Maybe one day our friendship will grow into that. But for now, we are partners… and friends.” Lina watched from a distance, her chest tight. The words warmed her—and frightened her all at once. Across the city, in a lavish living room filled with silence and authority, the same scene played out on a large television screen. Arjun’s mother sat rigidly on the sofa, eyes sharp, lips pressed thin. She watched the way her son looked at Lina. The way his voice softened when he spoke her name. The way he did not deny the possibility of love. Her fingers tightened around the remote. “So,” she said coldly, “this is the girl.” No one answered. “She has gone too far,” she continued, her tone clipped. “For Arjun to invest, to defend, to stand beside her in public…” She leaned back, eyes narrowing. “My son has fallen for her.” And she was not happy. Not at all. Because in her world, love was not chosen. It was arranged. And Lina Sharma was never meant to stand where she now stood—under lights, under praise, and far too close to her son’s heart. Outside, Lina stepped into the cool night air, unaware that her success had just awakened her most dangerous enemy. The world was watching. And the storm was only beginning.
