Chapter 9 : The Claim

1032 Words
The rain hammered against the temple roof as the tall stranger stepped through the ancient gateway. His polished black shoes splashed through puddles without hesitation. The expensive suit. The confident posture. The cold smile. Everything about him screamed power. Arjun. Diya immediately felt uncomfortable. Not because of who he was. Because of the way he looked at her. As though he already owned her. As though she were something he had finally come to collect. Krishna's face had gone pale. "Arjun..." he muttered. The young man smiled. "Grandfather Krishna." He folded his hands respectfully. But his eyes never left Diya. Not even for a second. Kamlesh noticed immediately. And he didn't like it. Not one bit. Arjun slowly approached. The umbrella shielded him from the rain while everyone else stood soaked by the storm. His gaze moved over Diya's face. Her wet hair. The tears still clinging to her cheeks. The hand she was currently holding. Kamlesh's hand. His smile faded. Slightly. Almost imperceptibly. But it faded. "So," Arjun said quietly. "This is Diya." The words sounded wrong. Like a businessman inspecting property. Diya instinctively moved closer to Kamlesh. A tiny movement. But Arjun noticed. Every detail. Every reaction. Every breath. His jaw tightened. "You're even more beautiful than the photographs." The compliment made Diya uncomfortable. "Photographs?" she asked. Arjun smiled. "I've had them for years." Kamlesh's expression darkened. Diya stared. "For years?" "Of course." Arjun looked genuinely confused. "Our families have discussed our marriage since childhood." Marriage. The word struck like lightning. Diya's stomach twisted. Arjun continued casually. "I wanted to know my future wife." Future wife. Again. The same possessive certainty. As though her opinion didn't matter. As though the wedding was already scheduled. Kamlesh stepped forward. "She isn't your future wife." The temple fell silent. Arjun finally looked at him. For the first time. His eyes were sharp. Calculating. Dangerous. "And you are?" "Kamlesh." The two men stared at each other. Neither blinking. Neither backing down. Arjun suddenly laughed. A cold laugh. "Oh." Recognition flashed across his face. "The tattoo boy." Kamlesh's jaw clenched. "The what?" "The boy who tattooed her name on his chest." Arjun shrugged. "I've heard quite a lot about you." Diya immediately sensed trouble. The atmosphere had become suffocating. Arjun slowly walked around Kamlesh. Like a predator studying another predator "So you're the famous Kamlesh." His voice carried amusement. "The man who spent years chasing a woman who rejected him." Diya's eyes widened. "Enough." But Arjun ignored her. "They told me you failed school because of her." "They told me you became obsessed." "They told me you nearly ruined your life." Kamlesh remained silent. Arjun smirked. "Honestly, it's a little pathetic." The insult echoed through the temple. Diya immediately stepped forward. "Stop." Arjun turned toward her. Instantly. His expression softened. "Diya, you shouldn't defend him." She frowned. "You don't know him." "I know enough." His voice remained calm. Confident. Certain. "The kind of man suitable for you wouldn't spend years worshipping a fantasy." Kamlesh's hands clenched into fists. But he remained composed. Diya could feel the tension radiating from him. Arjun noticed too. And seemed pleased by it. Then something happened. Something small. Something terrifying. Arjun reached forward and casually brushed a wet strand of hair away from Diya's face. The action lasted only a second. But Diya immediately stepped back. Her entire body stiffened. Kamlesh moved before he even realized it. He grabbed Arjun's wrist. Hard. The temple exploded with tension. Both men froze. Rain thundered around them. Arjun slowly looked down at the hand gripping him. Then back up at Kamlesh. A dangerous smile appeared. "You touched me." Kamlesh didn't release him. "You touched her." The two men stood inches apart. Neither willing to retreat. Krishna stepped between them immediately. "Enough!" The old man's voice echoed. Reluctantly, Kamlesh released him. Arjun adjusted his cuff. Still smiling. Still calm. Which somehow made him more frightening. He turned toward Diya. "You're upset right now." "I'm not upset." "Then confused." "I'm not confused either." Arjun's smile disappeared completely. For the first time, irritation flashed across his face. "Then perhaps you've forgotten the promise between our families." Diya looked him directly in the eyes. "No." "Good." Silence. Then she spoke. One sentence. One devastating sentence. "But I love Kamlesh." Arjun froze. The world seemed to stop. Even the rain felt quieter. The words had clearly struck him harder than anyone expected. For several seconds he simply stared at her. As if waiting for her to laugh. To take it back. To say she was joking. But she didn't. She stood beside Kamlesh. Proudly. Openly. Fearlessly. The truth settled into the air. And something changed in Arjun's eyes. Not sadness. Not heartbreak. Something darker. Possession. The expression vanished almost instantly. But Diya saw it. Kamlesh saw it. Even Krishna saw it. Arjun smiled again. But this smile felt different. Wrong. Cold. "Interesting." He folded his umbrella. Rain immediately soaked his expensive suit. Yet he didn't seem to notice. His eyes remained locked on Diya. "You think you love him." The statement chilled everyone. "I know I do," Diya replied. Arjun laughed softly. "No." His gaze intensified. "You've known him through stories." "You've known him through waiting." "You've known him through distance." He took one step closer. "But eventually you'll understand." Diya's heart sank. Understand what? Arjun's smile widened. "You're meant to be with me." The certainty in his voice felt frightening. Not hopeful. Not romantic. Absolute. As if reality itself would eventually bend to his will. Then he turned and walked back toward his vehicle. Before entering, he looked over his shoulder one final time. Directly at Diya. "I didn't come all this way to lose you." The SUV door slammed shut. Moments later, the vehicle disappeared into the storm. Leaving an uneasy silence behind. Diya instinctively grabbed Kamlesh's hand. For the first time since meeting Arjun... She felt afraid. Because she had seen something in his eyes. Something that didn't look like love. It looked like obsession. And deep down... She knew this wasn't over. Not even close. to be continued................
