The journey back to the Silent Eyes headquarters passed in complete silence.
Rain had begun to fall over Necthera, turning the city's stone streets dark beneath the gray afternoon sky. Water dripped from the carriage windows as it rolled through the iron gates of headquarters, yet none of the detectives inside paid it any attention. The image of the tenth victim collapsing onto the frozen marketplace remained fresh in their minds.
Lucien sat opposite Halt, unable to stop replaying the events. The shadow that had moved on its own. The unnatural transformation. The ice that had spread farther than he intended.
He lowered his eyes to his hands.
They had finally stopped trembling.
"...Sir," he asked quietly, "what exactly was he?"
Halt continued looking out of the rain-covered window.
"I don't know."
Lucien looked surprised.
"You don't?"
"No."
Halt's answer came without hesitation.
"But I know one thing."
Lucien waited.
"He wasn't born that way."
Those words lingered in the carriage long after the conversation had ended.
When they arrived, officers were already waiting at the entrance.
"The Medical Division has secured the body," one of them reported. "Doctor Velen has already begun the examination."
Halt gave a slight nod.
"Good."
Before anyone could continue, another officer hurried down the corridor.
"Head Eren is requesting Detective Halt immediately."
Kael glanced toward Halt.
"So soon?"
"The order came only a few minutes ago," the officer replied. "He said it couldn't wait."
For a brief moment, Halt's expression remained unreadable. Then he turned toward Lucien.
"Stay with Kael."
Lucien frowned.
"What about the examination?"
"You'll join it shortly."
Without another word, Halt walked toward the upper floor, disappearing into the quiet corridors of headquarters.
Head Eren's office occupied the highest level of the Silent Eyes headquarters. Few detectives ever entered it, and fewer still were summoned there without explanation.
Halt knocked once.
"Come in."
The office was strangely quiet.
Eren stood beside the tall window overlooking the city, his hands folded behind his back. Rain slid slowly across the glass, blurring the rooftops beyond.
"You wanted to see me?"
Eren didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he walked toward his desk.
There, resting neatly upon the polished wood, lay a single black envelope.
No seal.
No writing.
Nothing distinguished it from any ordinary piece of paper.
Yet the moment Halt saw it, something in his expression shifted.
Only slightly.
Enough for Eren to notice.
"I found it after the emergency assembly," Eren said quietly. "Every division chief had been called in."
Halt's eyes remained fixed on the envelope.
"The office was locked?"
"As always."
"The windows?"
"Still sealed."
"No signs of forced entry?"
"None."
The room fell silent once more.
Eren gently pushed the envelope across the desk.
"I haven't shown it to anyone else."
Halt picked it up.
The paper felt strangely dry despite the rain outside, as though it had never been carried through the storm.
He unfolded it.
Inside...
Only one sentence had been written.
You've hidden him long enough.
Nothing else.
No signature.
No explanation.
Only the familiar black symbol beneath the words.
The same symbol that had appeared beside every victim.
For several seconds, Halt simply stared at the note.
His fingers tightened almost imperceptibly before relaxing again.
He folded the paper with the same care he would give a piece of fragile evidence and placed it back inside the envelope.
"...Where exactly was this?"
Eren met his eyes.
"On my desk."
Halt slowly looked around the office.
Every shelf remained untouched.
The curtains hadn't been disturbed.
The windows were still locked from the inside.
Nothing looked out of place.
And that was precisely what troubled him most.
After nearly a minute of silence, he spoke.
"They didn't leave this because they wanted to threaten us."
Eren folded his arms.
"No?"
Halt looked once more at the black envelope resting between them.
"They left it because they wanted us to know..."
His voice became quieter.
"...that they can enter this room whenever they choose."
The rain outside suddenly sounded much louder.
Neither man spoke again.
For the first time since the investigation had begun, both understood the same terrifying truth.
The people behind the experiments were no longer hiding in the shadows.
They had just reached the heart of the Silent Eyes.
The office remained silent long after Halt's words faded.
Outside, the rain continued to fall against the tall windows, its steady rhythm filling the space between the two men. The black envelope rested on Eren's desk like an ordinary piece of paper, yet both of them understood it was anything but ordinary.
Halt picked it up once more, turning it over in his hands. The paper was smooth, free of fingerprints, stains, or even the slightest crease beyond the fold. Whoever had left it behind had done so with remarkable care.
He opened it again, reading the single sentence for what felt like the tenth time.
"You've hidden him long enough."
Nothing else.
No demand.
No threat.
Just a statement.
Halt lowered the note and met Eren's eyes.
"They weren't trying to frighten you."
Eren leaned back slightly in his chair.
"No?"
"They were reminding us."
A faint crease appeared on Eren's forehead.
"Reminding us of what?"
"That they've always been closer than we've believed."
The room fell quiet again.
Eren slowly stood and walked toward the bookshelf lining the far wall. His fingers rested against the polished wood before he let out a slow breath.
"For twenty-six years, this headquarters has never been breached."
He turned to face Halt.
"Not once."
His voice remained calm, but there was an unmistakable weight behind every word.
"Every corridor is guarded. Every entrance is watched. Every document that enters this building is recorded."
His gaze drifted toward the envelope.
"And yet..."
"...someone walked into my office without leaving a single trace."
Halt said nothing.
Instead, he began walking around the room.
It was no longer an office in his eyes.
It was a crime scene.
His movements were slow and deliberate.
He examined the windows first.
Still locked.
No scratches around the frame.
No disturbed dust along the sill.
Next came the door.
The lock showed no signs of tampering.
Even the hinges were untouched.
He moved to the fireplace.
Cold.
Unused since the previous evening.
Finally, he returned to the desk.
Everything remained perfectly arranged.
The ink bottle sat exactly where it should.
The documents beneath it hadn't shifted by even a fraction.
Nothing had been stolen.
Nothing had been moved.
Only one thing had changed.
The envelope.
Halt stopped.
"They wanted us to notice it immediately."
Eren nodded once.
"I thought the same."
"They could have hidden it."
"They could have left it somewhere only I would find."
A pause settled between them.
"But they didn't."
Halt carefully placed the envelope back on the desk.
"They wanted you to see it the moment you entered."
Eren folded his arms.
"Which means..."
"They're no longer interested in remaining invisible."
Those words lingered heavily inside the office.
For months, the enemy had operated from the shadows.
Bodies appeared.
Symbols were carved.
Witnesses vanished.
Everything had been calculated to leave as little evidence as possible.
But now...
A sniper had attacked one of the Silent Eyes' own detectives.
An experiment had unfolded in broad daylight.
And someone had entered the Head's office without being seen.
The pattern had changed.
"They're escalating," Halt said quietly.
Eren's expression hardened.
"Or they've reached the next stage."
The words sent an uneasy silence through the room.
Halt looked once more at the note.
One sentence.
Yet it carried enough weight to change the direction of the entire investigation.
He folded it carefully before slipping it back into the envelope.
"I'll keep this."
Eren looked at him.
"You think there's more hidden in it?"
"No."
Halt's voice remained calm.
"I think whoever wrote this wanted me to read it."
For the first time since the conversation began, Eren's eyes narrowed.
"You?"
Halt didn't answer.
Instead, he walked toward the door.
His hand rested on the brass handle before he stopped.
Without turning around, he spoke.
"The experiments."
Eren waited.
"They aren't finished."
Silence.
"They've only just begun."
He opened the door and stepped into the corridor.
The heavy wooden door closed quietly behind him.
Eren remained standing alone in the office.
His gaze drifted toward the rain-covered window before returning to the empty space on his desk where the envelope had rested moments earlier.
For years, he had believed the Silent Eyes stayed one step ahead of every threat lurking within Necthera.
Today...
For the first time...
He wasn't certain that had ever been true.
