Gia
I flew from Seattle to New York. Maverick wanted to board the flight with me but knowing how that would be the most grueling hours of my life, I declined. Respectfully.
And surprisingly, he didn’t push.
Thanks to him, I flew business class for the very first time in my life.
Airplanes flew above me. The sun was hot, beating down on my skin as I covered my face with my hands. I would forever be grateful for the sunscreen Oona forced in my bag at the last minute.
What would I have ever done without my cousin?
“That’s what I’m talking about! This is exactly why you should always listen to me. If you hadn’t listened to me, would you ever have gotten to fly business class?”
I stood outside the airport, rolling my eyes. “I’m about to hang up. Trying to book a ride,”
“Wait? You didn’t notice?”
“Notice what?”
“The gift I slipped into your suitcase—” I could hear the mischief in her voice and alarm bells went off in my head.
“Oona!”
“Don’t worry. You’ll love it. It is sexy and hot. An upgrade from all the boring underwear you packed. I exchanged them for something more interesting. It is summer. You should show a lot of skin. Remember , the art of seduction. Don’t disappoint me! Call me if you need any tips. You are welcome,”
Before I could say Jack, she hung up on me.
The last time she had pulled something like this, it had ended in disaster. She’d slipped a pack of condoms into my luggage before I left for Thailand with Mitch. As it turned out, they came in handy. That was how I lost my virginity to a guy I met there.
And even though I still had an obvious crush on Mitch, I was beginning to like this guy too. For a while, it felt like we were becoming something—until, a few days later, he walked right past me as though he didn’t even know who I was.
I was eighteen.
Instinctively, I opened my suitcases—not caring that it was in the open. If I had to dispose of them, the time was now.
I saw it and all I could do was suck in a deep breath.
Oona never disappointed.
Lingeries that left nothing left to the memory. Mini bikinis that I would never buy.
I held up a tiny piece of neon fabric. It was too small. Too tiny.
“No way–”
“Is that for me?”
I stilled, head jerking towards the source of the familiar voice and my breathing stalled. White shirt. Beige pants. The complete summer vibe. Handsome too…
Did I just say he was handsome?
Focus Gia.
“No,” I shoved the tiny bikini back under my clothes and zipped the bag shut so fast I almost caught my fingers. “Why would it be?”
“Then why would you pack it?”
“I don’t know,” my cheeks flamed with embarrassment, his burning gaze singed my cheeks.
“I think I know. You can’t wait to get down with me,”
Pain split through my skull.
This was Oona’s fault.
“Don’t get ahead of yourself. I packed muumuu’s and all the boring stuff. Oona swapped them out,”
“Oona?”
“My cousin,”
“She knows ball. I wouldn’t mind though. It was how my grandma had eleven kids,” He said, grabbing my suitcases and pulling them towards a Black ford pickup.
I laughed. I didn’t intend to, but I did and his eyes lit up at the sound of it.
“You are ridiculous. Anyways, what are you doing here?”
He loaded my suitcases into the truck’s bed.
“Sightseeing,” he shot me a ridiculous look. “Of course, I’m here to pick you up?”
The ride to the hamptons took about two hours as he pulled up in front of this sprawling mansion that left me gaping. Roses and Ivy veiling the corners as I climbed out of the truck..
“Your place is beautiful,”
He pulled the suitcases out of the truck, the veins in his hands showing with the effort. “It is not mine. It is Robert’s,”
The mention of Robert sent panic bolting through me. That was when it occurred to me that I didn’t come with a gift. That was not a nice impression.
How could it have slipped my mind?
“Maverick. Is it too late to get him a gift? We could find something around here?”
His eyes lifted to mine. “I handled that already”
Relief crashed through me.
“What did you get him? Old record tapes? An expensive collection of wine? What does your dad like?”
Maverick paused, a slow smile curling his mouth. “Viagra”
My brain short-circuited for a minute. “Via–what?”
“Viagra,”
“Who the f**k gets their father Viagra? What is wrong with you?”
He shot me a wink that made my heart do this stupid flutter. “Don’t worry, you’ll soon see why he needs it,”
I was mortified.
I dragged my hands down my face—the same time the front door opened. My eyes snagged towards the woman with lush brown curls and beaming blue eyes. She looked clean and elegant.
A smile appeared on her face as she approached us.
“Gia, right?”
I forced a smile–confused–as I nodded. “Yes, Gia Heidi,”
Maverick said it would be just us, Mitch and Vivienne then Robert and his fiancée. So who was she?
“It’s nice meeting you,” she hugged me, briefly, casting a quick glance at Maverick and acknowledging him with a nod.
“I am Barbara—” she said, breaking the rising awkwardness between us.
“Cool,” I glanced at Maverick, laughing awkwardly. “You didn’t tell me you had a cousin named Barbara. Or is she your sister?”
Perhaps Mitch had a younger half-sister that I didn’t know about.
Maverick stood beside me, the heat from his body seeping into mine. “We don’t even look alike”
“Well you and Mitch don’t share any resemblance. Need I explain more?” I whispered.
Then who was she? Why was he doing a poor job in introducing us properly?
A laugh spilled out of Barbara’s mouth. “I am not any of that. I am Robert’s fiancée. Maverick’s future stepmom.”
