Gia
Mitch backed me against the wall.
He cupped my ass perfectly through that black dress and his mouth devoured mine.
He peeled my panties, his finger sliding into me as a sharp gasp escaped my parted lips.
I cried, moaning into his mouth.
“I love you, Mitch. I have always loved you”
He slipped another finger inside, and a tear slid down my cheek as he whispered into my ears.
“I love you much more, Vivy”
That name was all it took to jerk awake from that horrible dream. The slickness between my thighs was even more embarrassing. What the actual f**k. As if being tormented in reality wasn't enough, it had to happen in my dream too.
Oona kicked my door open, shouting. “Oh My God, Gia. Oh-My-God!”
I groaned into the pillow. “Please Oona, this is too early. I have work—” I almost cried.
Her Persian cat—Bliss Paw—that had been scratching on my door all night trailed behind her. I knew it was weird but I could have sworn that she had this smugness on her face.
She hopped straight into my bed, curled in a circle directly close to my face.
“The New York Times posted about you four hours ago. You’re literally all over the headlines and every gossip blog,” she announced, snatching the duvet off me and tossing it onto the sofa. I nearly let out a frustrated whine. “First it was Maverick. Now it’s Ian Markovic. How the f**k do you keep getting these men? I need a tutorial. Seriously, what exactly did you manifest?”
She squealed, practically vibrating with excitement.
I turned, my brain still foggy.
“Who is Ian Markovic and why would I be on every headline? Are you still drunk, Oona?” my voice was still groggy with sleep.
The only Markovic I knew was Mitch and Maverick’s mum. Adeline.
She plopped down beside me, leaving me wedged between her and her fluffy Persian cat.
“What do you mean you don't know Ian? As in Ian Markovic,” I had to clench my eyes shut because of her phone’s blinding light. “The dangerously–smexing–hot owner of a liquor company. He has all the insta baddies camping in his comment. You don't know how big this actually is, Gia,”
I was done.
“Yeah let me have that,” I snatched the phone from her, lowered the brightness, and typed the name into the search engine. The moment his face appeared on the screen, I froze, my eyes nearly bulging out of their sockets.
Maverick!
Sleep disappeared from my eyes immediately. I opened her social media, searched for the name Ian and what followed next made my jaw drop.
Pictures of me in his kitchen. Pictures I couldn't pinpoint when exactly he took them because I was more focused on the ridiculous heat pooling at my core. The same work outfit from last night.
I would kill him!
Oona burst out laughing. “Do you realise how incredibly lucky you are? You’d actually be the first woman he’s ever introduced to everyone. But I’m confused—how did you meet Ian? You’ve never told me about him, and it’s unlike you to keep something this big from me.”
Her dark brown eyes met mine and I groaned into my palm.
“This is Maverick. I don't know why he goes by the name Ian but it is him. Mitch’s twin,”
Her lips parted while I tossed the phone back to the bed.
“What!” She exclaimed. “Ian is Maverick? Then why doesn’t he go by it? Why Ian,”
I gave her a blank stare. “I just said I didn’t know,” I winced, tired and wanting her to leave already.
“Why are you being so cranky?”
“Because you woke me up over this. This is like a few minutes past two,”
Her lips lifted in a sneer before she heaved an exasperated sigh. “s**t. I actually thought this would end up with two powerful men fighting over my beautiful cousin. But this even makes it easier,”
Oona threw herself all over me and I couldn’t cry. Her cheeks pressed against mine as she curled a hand around me. “Gia, I want you to think about this. You have landed yourself a gold-mine that you’d better not lose”
I shoved her off me, disbelief swirling in my eyes. “Sorry to disappoint you cousin but I’m not a gold-digger. The moment we both achieve what we want with this fake relationship, I’m disappearing,”
I kicked her off the bed before the mortification could completely overtake her features.
Oona was something else. Wicked too! But I loved her regardless.
Before she allowed me back into the apartment last night, she practically made me swear on my life—that I was just returning from Maverick’s penthouse and had accepted his offer. Only after that did she allow me inside.
I heard her scoff. “How is it gold-digging when Maverick himself handed you the shovel and showed you the goldmine? Do you really think he gave them to you just for decoration? Gia, you need to be smarter than this!”
“You had better not mess this up.”
I woke up again the second time to calls and messages from Mitch.
Fourteen missed calls in total and an absurd number of messages I didn’t bother replying.
‘Wait. You were seriously not joking about being in a long term relationship with Maverick?’
‘Do you know how betrayed I feel right now?’
‘I’ve never even been to my twin’s home, despite the fact that we live in the same city. Yet there you were, standing comfortably in his kitchen like you already owned the place.’
‘I am disappointed’
‘I wanted to give you the benefit of doubt and concluded that perhaps Maverick was just making stories but you have broken my trust. Forever!’
‘What do you even see in my Twin?’
‘Isn’t it a universal best-friend code that siblings are off limits?’
‘Do you seriously understand how f****d up it is to date someone I came into the world with?’
And for the first time in my life, I did something I would have never imagined doing in a thousand years. I finally had the balls to block my best-friend.
