Chapter 14:The Turning Point

915 Words
The steel beam sat in the center of Emilio’s kitchen table like an accusation. Every time he passed by, he felt its weight—not in his hands, but in his chest. Mendez had made his intentions clear. Torres paced the apartment, restless. “This isn’t just intimidation anymore. This is war.” Emilio rubbed his temples. “I know. But we can’t just go at him blindly. He’s still got friends in high places.” “Then hit him where those friends can’t protect him,” Torres shot back. “On the streets.” Emilio looked up sharply. Torres wasn’t joking. --- The Dual Plan That night, Emilio met with Jorge. The lawyer was already collecting new evidence—phone records from the freight yard, testimony from Arturo, photographs of the SUV wreckage. “I can make this stick,” Jorge said. “But it’ll take time. Courts move slow, and Mendez knows it.” Emilio nodded. “That’s why we don’t just wait. While you build the legal case… I’ll cut off his power.” Jorge raised an eyebrow. “How?” “I’ll go through the people he controls. Contractors, suppliers, even his errand boys. I want every one of them to know he can’t protect them anymore. If they start talking—or walking away—he’s done.” It was a risky strategy. Mendez had ruled by fear for years. But Emilio was betting that fear could change direction. --- Breaking the Circle The first target was Mendoza Steel, one of Mendez’s biggest suppliers. Emilio and Torres walked into their office unannounced. “We’re not here to threaten you,” Emilio told the manager, a wiry man with deep worry lines. “We’re here to tell you the truth—Mendez’s grip is slipping. You don’t want to be on his sinking ship.” The manager shifted nervously. “You think he’s finished?” “I know he is,” Emilio said, sliding a copy of the corruption probe’s preliminary report across the desk. “And when he falls, the investigators will come for everyone tied to him. Unless you start talking now.” Two days later, Jorge called. “We’ve got Mendoza’s statement. He’s willing to testify about bribes Mendez paid to secure contracts.” It was the first crack. Others followed. --- Whispers in the Street By the end of the week, Emilio could feel the shift. Men who had once nodded to Mendez in the city center now looked away. Rumors spread—he was losing influence, his ‘friends’ were leaving him stranded. But with every victory came greater risk. One evening, Emilio returned home to find his front door ajar. Inside, the place had been torn apart—drawers pulled out, furniture overturned. On the wall above his couch, scrawled in black paint, were three words: > You crossed me. Torres clenched his fists. “That’s it. We go straight for him.” --- The Meeting That Shouldn’t Exist Emilio had a contact—a man named Salgado, who ran a private security firm with ties to both law enforcement and less-than-legal networks. Salgado agreed to set up a meeting with someone close to Mendez’s inner circle. It would be dangerous, but if Emilio could convince this insider to talk, they could land a decisive blow. The meeting took place in an empty car park at midnight. The man who arrived was in his fifties, with tired eyes and a cigarette that burned down to his fingers before he noticed. “I’ve been with Mendez fifteen years,” the man said quietly. “But he’s gone too far. That thing at the freight yard… that wasn’t business. That was personal.” He handed Emilio a small USB drive. “Everything you need—emails, bank transfers, even recordings. But once you use it, he’ll know it came from me.” Emilio took it without hesitation. “I’ll make it count.” --- The Evidence That Could End Him Back at Jorge’s office, they plugged in the USB. File after file appeared—offshore account details, voice memos arranging illegal deals, proof of intimidation against rival contractors. “This is enough to bury him,” Jorge breathed. “Not just professionally. Prison.” But there was one file Emilio noticed—an audio clip labeled simply Warehouse. He clicked it, and Mendez’s voice filled the room: “Make sure it looks like an accident. No loose ends.” It was the smoking gun. --- Mendez Strikes Back They barely had time to celebrate. Two nights later, Emilio’s phone buzzed at 2 a.m. It was Torres. “They hit Jorge’s office. Smashed the place, stole computers. I think they were after the USB.” Emilio’s blood went cold. “Was Jorge hurt?” “No. But they wanted to send a message.” Emilio understood the message clearly—Mendez knew they had something, and he was getting desperate. --- The Resolve The next morning, Emilio stood on his balcony, watching the city wake. In the distance, the skyline shimmered with the same sunlight that had once felt like hope. Now it was a reminder of what was at stake. Mendez had taken his freedom once, nearly taken his life twice. Emilio had rebuilt everything from the ground up—his business, his reputation, his self-respect. And he wasn’t about to lose it now. He turned to Torres. “We finish this. No matter the cost.”
