A look of dread and horror flashes across my mother’s face and Lewis’s phone slides off her hand and is heading down but fortunately Lewis extends his hand and catches it. He can tell that whatever news mother was told are not good at all, he is even afraid to ask. I tell myself that I didn’t hear correctly, “mother…please tell me what the officer said,” I request. She glances up at me and I notice that her eyes are glowing with tears, “mom…” I blink away my own tears, I grab her hand that’s stretched out on top of the table and I shake it to get her to answer me.
