WORK AT THE CAFE

672 Words
Scene: The bustling cafe in the province, filled with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the chatter of customers. Lina, with her bright smile and energetic spirit, is taking orders, her movements efficient and graceful. Derek, with his slumped shoulders and bored expression, is wiping down tables, his movements slow and lethargic. Lina: (approaching Derek, her voice cheerful) Hey, Derek, how's it going? You're doing a great job keeping these tables spotless! Derek: (his gaze fixed on the table he's wiping, his voice a monotone) Yeah, it's... fine. Lina: (her smile unwavering, her eyes twinkling with amusement) I know it's a bit different than what you're used to, but you're getting the hang of it. You're a quick learner! Derek: (his jaw clenching, his eyes narrowed) I'm not here to be complimented. Just tell me what to do. Lina: (her voice softening, her eyes filled with understanding) Okay, okay, I get it. But I'm serious, you're doing a good job. And I'm here to help you if you need anything. Derek: (his gaze shifting to her, a flicker of something—perhaps curiosity—crossing his face) You're... you're always so positive. Don't you ever get tired? Lina: (her smile widening, her eyes sparkling with warmth) Tired? Not when I'm doing something I love. This cafe is my passion, and I love being surrounded by people. It's a joy to see them smile and enjoy a delicious cup of coffee. Derek: (his gaze dropping to the table, a hint of thoughtfulness in his expression) Lina: (moving closer, her voice gentle) You know, Derek, you're a good guy. You just need to find your passion. And that's okay, it takes time. But I'm here to help you along the way. Derek: (his gaze meeting hers, a glimmer of something—perhaps hope—sparkling in his eyes) Lina: (offering him a warm smile) Now, how about we get back to work? We've got a busy afternoon ahead of us Scene: The cafe is quiet after the lunch rush. Lina is wiping down the counter, humming a cheerful tune. Derek is stacking chairs, his movements still a bit stiff, but with a hint of focus. Lina: (Turning to Derek with a smile) You know, you're getting pretty good at stacking those chairs. You're a natural! Derek: (A slight smile touches his lips, a rare occurrence) It's not rocket science. Lina: (Laughing) True, but you're doing it with a lot more grace than you were a few days ago. Derek: (Shrugging) I guess I'm starting to get the hang of things. Lina: (Moving closer to him, her voice soft) You know, I'm really glad you came to work here. It's been... different having you around. Derek: (His gaze meeting hers, a hint of surprise in his eyes) Different? How so? Lina: (Her smile turning thoughtful) Well, you're... you're a challenge. But in a good way. You make me think. You make me see things from a different perspective. Derek: (His brow furrowing, a hint of confusion in his voice) What do you mean? Lina: (Taking a deep breath) I mean, you're used to having everything handed to you. You're used to being the center of attention. But here, you have to work for it. You have to earn it. And that's... that's a good thing. It's humbling. It's real. Derek: (His gaze dropping to the floor, a flicker of something—perhaps understanding—crossing his face) Lina: (Reaching out to touch his arm, her voice gentle) Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you're a bad person. You're just... you're just used to a different world. But I see something in you, Derek. I see potential. I see a good heart. Derek: (His gaze meeting hers, a flicker of something—perhaps gratitude—sparkling in his eyes) Lina: (Offering him a warm smile) So, keep working hard. Keep learning. And don't be afraid to ask for help. We're all in this together. Derek: (Nodding, a sense of purpose replacing his initial reluctance)
