The First Outing

1109 Words
Valentina barely slept. Every time she closed her eyes, the whispers she overheard clawed back into her thoughts. The Russians are moving in. If they touch the girl— The girl. That was all she was to them. A bargaining chip. A weakness to exploit. And Lorenzo’s response, cold and absolute: She is mine. Those words wrapped around her chest like chains. Part of her wanted to scream at him for daring to claim her. Another part—the darker, more dangerous part—burned at the memory of how fiercely he had said it. By dawn, her head pounded with exhaustion. She sat on the edge of the bed, staring at her trembling hands. I signed to save my family, she reminded herself. That’s all this is. Nothing more. A knock interrupted her thoughts. Isabella entered, holding a pale dress draped over her arm. “The master wants you ready in an hour,” she said gently. Valentina frowned. “Ready for what?” Isabella hesitated. “He is… taking you out.” Her stomach tightened. Out? She hadn’t left the mansion since arriving. A flicker of hope sparked inside her, but she quickly crushed it down. This wouldn’t be freedom. Not with Lorenzo. --- An hour later, Valentina descended the grand staircase. Lorenzo waited at the bottom, dressed in another perfectly tailored suit, his dark eyes locking onto her instantly. The dress Isabella had chosen clung to her curves more than she liked, the soft cream fabric brushing her knees, her neckline modest but elegant. She felt exposed under his gaze, as though he could peel away every layer of her thoughts. “You look… presentable,” he said, his lips twitching slightly. Her pulse spiked. “And where exactly are you dragging me?” His smirk was slow, dangerous. “Into my world.” He offered his arm. She hesitated before placing her hand on it, the heat of his body seeping through the fine fabric of his suit. The black car waited outside, Marco already behind the wheel. As they drove through the city, Valentina’s heart raced. She hadn’t been beyond the mansion walls in days, and though the streets were familiar, everything felt different now—sharper, more threatening. Their destination was a private club tucked into one of the city’s wealthiest districts. From the outside, it looked elegant, discreet, but Valentina could feel the shadows lurking in its walls. Inside, the air smelled of cigars and expensive whiskey. Men in tailored suits occupied velvet chairs, their conversations low and guarded. The moment Lorenzo entered, silence rippled across the room, every pair of eyes turning to him. He was their king, and they knew it. Valentina stiffened under the stares, clinging tighter to his arm. She caught whispers. “That must be her…” “…the Rossi girl…” “…he actually brought her here.” Her cheeks burned. She wanted to disappear. Lorenzo leaned down, his lips brushing her ear. “Hold your head high, Valentina. They smell fear like blood.” She swallowed hard, straightening her back. They sat in a secluded booth at the back of the club. Marco stood nearby, ever watchful, while a server placed glasses of wine on the table. Lorenzo’s gaze never left her as he sipped. “This is where decisions are made. Deals, alliances, wars—all of it starts here.” “And I’m supposed to just sit and watch?” she asked. His lips curved. “For now. You’ll learn.” Before she could reply, a man approached their table. Tall, broad-shouldered, with icy blue eyes and a cruel smile. “Lorenzo,” he greeted smoothly. “I didn’t expect to see you flaunting your… new acquisition.” His gaze slid to Valentina, lingering. “She’s beautiful. Too fragile for this world, though.” Valentina’s skin crawled. Lorenzo’s expression didn’t change, but his voice dropped an octave. “Careful, Viktor.” The man chuckled. “Relax, my friend. I’m only admiring. You know how quickly delicate things can… break.” Lorenzo set his glass down with deliberate calm. “And you know how quickly I make people disappear when they touch what’s mine.” The tension between them was suffocating. Valentina’s breath hitched as Viktor’s smile faltered. After a moment, he gave a mock bow and walked away. Her heart pounded in her chest. “Who was that?” she whispered. “An enemy who pretends to be an ally,” Lorenzo replied. “Remember his face. If he ever speaks to you again, you walk away.” “And if I don’t?” His gaze locked on hers, dark and unyielding. “Then I’ll make sure you never forget why you should.” The drive back to the mansion was thick with silence. Valentina stared out the window, her mind spinning. She hated the way Viktor’s eyes had lingered on her. She hated even more the way Lorenzo’s protectiveness had made something inside her tighten. Finally, she broke the silence. “Why bring me there at all? To parade me like property?” Lorenzo’s jaw flexed. “To show them you’re untouchable. To remind them who I am.” “I didn’t ask to be your shield.” He turned, his voice low and sharp. “And I didn’t ask to want you.” Her breath caught. She turned back to the window quickly, heart hammering. She didn’t know what terrified her more—that he had said it… or that some part of her wanted to believe it. --- Back at the mansion, night settled heavy over the city. Valentina paced her room, her emotions in chaos. She hated him. She hated the rules, the cage, the way her life had been stolen. And yet, she couldn’t deny the memory of his words in the car. I didn’t ask to want you. Her hand brushed over her chest, where her heart beat too fast. She wanted to rip it out, silence it, but it betrayed her again and again. A sudden noise at the window made her freeze. She turned, blood running cold. The curtains shifted. A shadow moved just beyond the glass. Valentina’s breath caught in her throat. Someone was out there. Watching her. Before she could scream, the balcony doors slammed open. Lorenzo stormed in, his gun drawn, Marco at his back. The shadow was gone. “Get away from the window!” Lorenzo barked, grabbing her arm and pulling her close. Her body collided with his, her heart racing. For the first time since this nightmare began, she felt something she hadn’t expected. Not fear. Not hatred. Safety.
