Chapter 5

DESMOND "But Sir…" Jason frowned. "What's going to happen to the rest?"  "Return to their various houses obviously," I replied. "Mr. Hunter, I think you should interview all of them. This position is highly important to just interview only ten. Besides, I'm not sure this will sit well with the applicants."  "Then just tell them this is part of the screening. Those who made it here before nine are the ones qualified for my interview. Is that clear?" I held his gaze so he found it impossible to waver.  "Y-yes sir," he answered before taking his leave quietly. ** In the end, none of them passed or better said, I failed them all. Perhaps due to the terrible mood I was in or perhaps regardless of their qualifications, I just couldn't trust them. If I was going to have a personal secretary, it would be someone I could rely my trust on.  I glanced at my watch reading ten minutes past four. I was still clueless and frustrated. Pondering on how to escape my Father's claws. All because of Emmy he was ready to ruin me. I heaved a heavy sigh. I was in a real dilemma.  "Mr. Hunter…" Jason mumbled as he sauntered into my office. His countenance didn't fail in expressing his worries. I could tell where this was already leading to.  "What's wrong?" I asked.  "It's regarding today's interview, Sir."  "And what about it?" I asked in a cold voice.  "I apologize if this feels out of line but this is the third time we're holding this same interview and yet, you've kept on failing them. If this keeps going on, I'm afraid we might lose face," he explained. "I understand…" I responded as I arose from my swivel, pulling my suit jacket off my Coat Stand. "But you should also know the Secretariat Position is one Vital position. If we pick the wrong choice, it would cost us badly. I'm only trying to find the right person for the job and I don't care what anybody thinks." My lips pursed as a flash incident from my past played before me. Perhaps because of my past, I was beginning to have trust issues.  "In that case, we'll put our trust in your decision sir," he answered sharply.  "Of course, you all don't have a choice unless you guys want to be fired." I chuckled and he smiled.  "Are you leaving sir?" I hummed and he laughed nervously.  "Something has gone wrong right?" I instantly shot him a glare. Whenever he displayed that kind of laughter, it wasn't something good.  “There's only a TINY little problem…" He gestured with his nervousness still evident and I heaved a light sigh. "What happened now?"  "Ermm…"  "Jason, spill it!"  "One of the applicants for the interview is still lingering about. She's been protesting and she wants to see you. Honestly it's already dragging attention."  "Have the guards send her away already then," I replied.  "We've done that countless times Mr. Hunter but her resilience is something else. She keeps coming back everytime we take action."  "Just a tiny nuisance and you can't get rid of it!" I scowled but he went mute. Deep down, I knew he wanted me to meet her. He wasn't satisfied with me choosing ten only in the first place.  "I think we should give her a chance. Who knows, she just might be the right person for the job."  I glanced through the large glass wall by the side displaying the city's view for a while. He did have a point. "I'm extremely tired Jason, you better hope she's worth it."  His face instantly lit up into a smile. "I'll send her in right away sir." He muttered before scurrying out.  I returned my suit jacket to its position before relaxing on the swivel chair and after some minutes, my door quietly opened for both of them.  There she was, her red hair seemed to have grown messy a bit but they still dazzled somewhat. Her dress wasn't spectacular in any form, it was just okay. Her looks were absolutely beautiful even with her light make up but still my interest didn't pick.  "Please have a seat." I gestured courteously while Jason dropped her credentials beside me. I saw the look of hope that gleamed briefly in his eyes before he exited. "So you're the lady who has been causing a ruckus for hours now," I muttered with my eyes focused on her info. From the looks of it, even her credentials were ordinary. "I'm Maya Coleman."  I stared straight into those gray eyes so she found it impossible to waver. "Miss Maya, if I wanted I could lock you up for your unacceptable actions."  "I didn't have a choice," she replied, not in the slightest intimidated or awed at my presence. At least she was better than the previous applicants. "Yes you did. You should have quietly left just like the others." I leaned back in my swivel chair. "That wasn't an option."  "Why?"  "Because I risked everything to be here. I just couldn't leave without having an interview." My eyebrow arched upwards. "According to my test, you came a little too late which made you unqualified for the interview."  "The interview was slated for Ten, Mr. Hunter. Neither were we informed of some test." Her voice rose to a higher pitch.  "This is my company, and I believe I have the right to act as I see fit." "But giving such a requirement at the last minute, isn't it quite unfair?"  "Life itself isn't fair," I quoted in return. "I was the interviewer and I believe I have the autonomy to choose what requirements to base my test on. Miss Maya."  For a second, I thought she would argue further but her eyes lowered to the desk. Like there was a hidden pain in them. "I just checked your credentials, and they don't look too intriguing in any way. In fact, they're low compared to the others. I'm sure you know this too, yet you still applied for this interview." I paused. "I'm curious, why my company, why do you think you can handle such a big position here?"  Silence reigned amidst us for a long while before she exhaled.  "Truthfully, getting a job here is my last hope. Like I said, I risked everything to be here. As regards handling this position, I have no doubt that I will perform beyond expectations." Her eyes once again met mine. I frowned slightly and in a strange way, I was interested in her. Her eyes expressed so much yet I couldn't understand them. There was more to her. "Do you think you're worthy of this position? You have no experience, no reputable qualifications, yet you want to work at a big company." I shot her a quizzical look.  "If I didn't deem myself worthy, I wouldn't have remained here for hours," she answered and my interest was further piqued. "Miss Maya, do you want to hear my honest opinion?" I asked and she nodded. "First, you were a nuisance to my hotel. Second, you don't have enough qualifications and experience to handle this position. Thirdly..." I pursed my lips. "I can't seem to trust you."  Her lips parted slightly but no words came out and her eyes twitched as if they were fighting back tears. "Unfortunately, you don't qualify to work in this position. I'm sure you and I both know this brief interview has been a complete waste of time. Miss Maya."  I expected to see a broken look but she smiled.  "At least I can leave now without regrets," she mumbled as she arose. "Thank you for having me, Mr. Hunter," she added before leaving.  As the door clicked shut, my gaze fell on her credentials again. She was ordinary, yet she still persisted until she finally got an interview. I exhaled, whilst wondering if she was worth a chance or not. A tiny smile spread on my lips. "You're quite interesting Maya Coleman."
