Chapter one – The Past Never Sleeps
The phone kept ringing.
Daniel.
Emily stared at the screen like it was a ghost.
Ryan’s jaw tightened slightly, but he said nothing.
“You don’t have to answer,” he added calmly.
But she already had.
“Hello?”
“Emily,” Daniel’s voice came through, familiar and unsettling. “We need to talk.”
Her stomach twisted. “About what?”
“About us.”
There was no us.
But hearing his voice brought back memories — the gala night, the flashing cameras, the humiliation, the guilt.
“I’m busy,” she said quietly.
“With him?”
Ryan looked away, giving her space. That hurt more than jealousy would have.
Daniel sighed. “You ran away from something real. I just want closure.”
Closure.
The word echoed in her chest.
“Fine,” she whispered. “Tomorrow.”
She hung up.
Silence stretched between her and Ryan.
“You don’t owe me explanations,” he said, though something guarded had slipped into his expression.
“I said yes to him once,” she admitted. “But I didn’t love him.”
Ryan stepped closer, rain still falling softly around them.
“And me?”
Her breath caught.
“You scare me,” she said honestly.
A slow smile touched his lips. “Good.”
That made her laugh.
But neither of them moved.
Because this time, the almost-kiss felt heavier.
More complicated.

Chapter two– Dinner with Ghosts
The next evening, Emily chose a simple black dress. Armor.
Daniel was waiting at an upscale restaurant in Manhattan. Still polished. Still confident.
Still wrong.
“You look beautiful,” he said.
“Thank you.”
They sat.
For a moment, it felt like old times.
But then she noticed something — she wasn’t nervous. She wasn’t hopeful.
She was detached.
“You embarrassed me,” Daniel said bluntly.
Her eyes hardened. “I saved both of us from a divorce.”
“You could’ve said yes and figured it out.”
“That’s not love.”
He leaned forward. “So what is? That tech guy?”
Her pulse jumped. “His name is Ryan.”
“So there is someone.”
She didn’t answer.
Daniel exhaled. “You don’t believe in forever, Emily. You never have.”
He was wrong.
She did believe.
She just never felt it.
Until now.
“I’m sorry I hurt you,” she said gently. “But I won’t apologize for choosing honesty.”
Daniel studied her carefully.
“You’re different.”
“I am.”
And she meant it.
Because this time, when she left the restaurant, she didn’t feel guilt.
She felt clarity.

Chapter three-
Walls Falling
Ryan was working late when she showed up at his office.
He looked surprised. “Everything okay?”
“Yes.”
She stepped inside, closing the door behind her.
“I met Daniel.”
“And?”
“It’s over. Completely.”
Ryan held her gaze, searching for doubt.
“There’s no unfinished chapter,” she added softly.
He walked toward her slowly.
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
There was no rain this time.
No interruption.
No past calling.
Just two people standing inches apart.
“I meant what I said,” he whispered. “I don’t need promises. I just need honesty.”
She reached for his hand.
“You have it.”
This time, when he kissed her—
It wasn’t rushed.
It wasn’t desperate.
It was certain.
Slow.
Warm.
Intentional.
And for the first time in her life…
Emily didn’t pull away.
