CHAPTER TEN TRISTAN’S POV I easily squashed the beer can in my hand, aiming for the pile on the floor but missing miserably as it skirted off to the corner of the room, a cluttering sound echoing in the room. How many of those had I drunk? I had lost count but still was barely enough to make want to pass out. I picked up the remaining can, opened it before seeping while staring at the out of the window. The rain started as a light drip, splattering against the closed glass window of my room and soon enough there was lightning streaking through the sky. Sitting on the couch, in complete silence, I let my ears drown in the soothing sound of the rain and the thunder. Sometimes I hated the silence because then I could hear their muffled screams, fear in their eyes as I tore them apart until they were nothing but scattered pieces of flesh and bone. I don’t know when it stopped raining but I did wake up at the sound of five-thirty o’clock alarm, still in my sitting position with whatever had been left of that beer decorating my sweatpants. This time round, I hadn’t seen their scared faces in my brain. No, that strange woman’s face had haunted my dreams instead. Her damning beauty, eyes that had me wishing on the stars that she didn’t me for the monster I really was and lips-damn, those lips. “Strange woman, really? She is our mate. I’m kind of offended right now,” Logan chose that very moment to get into my head. He was lucky him and I were one or I would have probably killed him. He got on my nerves more than anyone ever has. “Maybe you shouldn’t be reading my thoughts,” I countered. “Whatever. It’s my turn anyway,” he said, attempting to take over. “Not today, Logan,” I said, rather firmly, thwarting any efforts of him to take control. Every morning I would shift, race around in my territory for about thirty minutes before I got ready for work. “Why not?” he seemed surprised. “Because I know what you are going to do. I’m not interested in finding her and neither do I want her near me,” I replied. I had known my wolf basically my whole life and so I knew he would try to find her. “What? I was not going to do that,” he denied. “Like you said yesterday, we are basically one person,” I changed into my running shorts and wife beater. Adrenaline coursed through my veins as I raced around my territory, sweat dripping on me, my breathing sharper and I could feel my muscles burning under the strain. Yet I kept running, their muffled screams growing louder with each step I ran. This time, I lost count of the time I ran and it was only when I got back into the house did, I realize I’d run for almost an hour. Three maids, who for the love of God, I couldn’t keep up with their names, were already cleaning up the house. I must have employed them yesterday, or perhaps the day before that but who cares? Wait, why did I fire the ones before them? I took a shower, got ready for work before I got downstairs in time for breakfast. I had just finished when the door opened, Mrs. Greene, the head maid of the house and someone who basically watched me grow up, walked in. “Going to work this early?” She asked puzzled. “Well, I have to so much to do and some investors from New York are coming. I wouldn’t want to make a bad impression,” I took my suitcase and car keys, “Oh, and tonight, I would love some good pork chops,” “Of course,” Even as I walked out of the door, I could feel her gaze on me. I knew she was giving me one of those sympathetic looks, like I was irredeemable. I hated them. It was a reminder that she was right to look at me like that. Redemption was beyond me, even if I lied to myself over and over that I could be saved. I got in my car, a 2020 Toyota Crown Athlete, and drove out of the gate, listening to Louis Armstrong’s Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen. Pretty cliche, right? That a guy who shut everyone out, murdered people and his only therapist was his wolf, wouldn’t mind a jazz mixtape. Clayton Furnitures, the family company, was located right in the heart of the Diamond falls. Standing at four storeys, it was a reputable company, extending its services to the neighboring towns and maybe I was nothing close to Elon Musk type of rich, but I was quite well-off. My parents, if I could even call them that, at least had the decency to actually make the heir to this company. Still, that wouldn’t make up for my lost childhood. The day for me was another same cycle; bark at few employees for incompetence, send more than half the applications to the recycle bin and almost none of applicants seemed qualified enough. A knock on my door, cut through my concentration and I snarled out loud. “Its me,” Josh said as he walked in and I instantly relaxed. “What? Got bored of your new position already?” “No, as a matter of fact, I’m very pleased with it. I don’t have to see your face all day,” he shrugged,” Anyway, where are you with applicants? Found any credible PA?” “You want to know if your woman made it?” I slammed my laptop shut,” Well, tell her she can start tomorrow. Half of these aren’t even qualified and well, she can just start. So how about dinner gets to be on you?” “Gladly,” He smiled broadly. That day I had made a decision, thinking I was doing somebody I cared about a favor, but I had just turned my whole life around and down my hell hole, I would drag her along with me.
