SILENT FALL

3674 Words
The study inside Justin Vance's secluded mansion smelled of old money, expensive bourbon, and impending betrayal. Heavy mahogany bookshelves lined the walls, but the atmosphere was entirely devoid of warmth. Logan stood right in front of Justin's heavy desk, keeping his face completely blank. "Boss," Logan said, keeping his voice leveled. "Lowin won't be at the party tonight. He got caught up in an emergency meeting that's running late. I doubt he'll show up at all." Justin paused, his fingers wrapping around a crystal tumbler of whiskey. He rubbed his chin, his dark eyes narrowing as he drifted into deep thought. A cold, calculating silence stretched between them. "And here I really wanted to surprise my dear brother tonight," Justin murmured, a sharp edge bleeding into his tone. "How disappointing. Whatever. Send my gift anyway." "Right away, sir." "And Logan?" Justin called out just as the man reached the door. "Keep me updated the second his schedule changes. If he so much as breathes near that ballroom, I want to know." "Noted." The moment Logan stepped out of the mansion and into the cool night air, the stoic mask slipped. He climbed into his car, fired up the engine, and pulled out of the driveway. Steering with one hand, he pulled up his phone and fired off a rapid text to Lowin Vance. [Logan]:He bought it. I don't think he's going to attend the party. --- On the other side of the city, shielded by high concrete walls and razor wire, a very different meeting was taking place. The private military base, owned entirely by Vance Empire Security, was usually reserved for elite tactical training. Tonight, its soundproofed briefing room hosted the highest-ranking detectives in the state. At the center of the room stood Sergeant Dale Kyles, a man whose rigid posture and tired eyes spoke of a lifetime spent chasing a concept most men in power forgot, justice for all. But tonight, the seasoned detective looked completely stressed. He looked across the steel table, his gaze flickering between Lowin Vance and his notorious inner circle, Salvatore brothers and Dominic Sinclair. The sheer gravitational pull of the five most powerful, ruthless men in the country being in the same room was enough to make the air feel heavy. The detectives exchanged uneasy glances, silently wondering what kind of cataclysmic threat could have united them. "Let me get this straight, Mr. Vance," Sergeant Kyles said, leaning forward and rubbing his temples. "You're telling me you have an estranged twin brother? And he's currently in the country, plotting to disrupt the peace of this city over some twisted sibling rivalry?" Before Lowin could speak, Debrin, standing just behind him like a shadow, stepped into the light. "Sergeant Kyles, let's clarify one thing," Debrin said, his voice dropping to a deadly, gravelly register. "We are not here to beg for the police department's help. We are here to issue a courtesy warning. If anything goes sideways tonight, and fingers start pointing toward Lowin Vance or the Vance Empire, you will think twice before you take action." Lowin sat in the shadows, his tailored suit immaculate, his expression unreadable. He swirled the amber liquid in his glass, his eyes flashing with a cold, predatory intelligence. "I don't know exactly what his first move will be," Lowin said smoothly, though the underlying menace in his voice made a few detectives instinctively shift their hands closer to their holsters. "But Justin is a parasite. He will do anything to ruin me, including dumping his dirtiest deeds directly at my doorstep." Lowin's instincts were flawless. --- Back at the mansion, the moment Logan's car cleared the gates, Justin spun his leather chair around to face his right hand man, Jacob. "Logan mentioned that Lowin signed a fifty-fifty ownership contract with Jade Houston, correct?" Justin asked, a slow, predatory purr in his voice. "Yes, sir. That's right," Jacob replied, checking his tablet. "Houston is practically desperate to claw his way back to the top." A wicked smile spread across Justin's face. "I guess missing the party tonight is actually a good thing. Jacob, set up a meeting with that i***t Jade. Somewhere totally public with clear CCTV coverage. If he goes missing tonight, who gets the blame?" Jacob smirked. "Lowin Vance." "Perfect. Call him and tell him I can get him half of his company back. The greedy bastard will jump at the chance." "On it, sir." Left alone, Justin pulled a matte-black handgun from his desk drawer. He racked the slide back with a sharp, lethal clack. He traced his fingers along the barrel, letting out a sinister laugh. "Brother..." he murmured to the empty room, his eyes wild with ambition. "Before the police even figure out you have a twin, you'll be sitting in a holding cell, sweating through your expensive suit, trying your absolute best to prove your innocence. And while you're locked away... I am going to take every single thing that belongs to you." --- Annah's sports car pulled up to the main gates of the Vance Estate, and Amilah's breath caught in her throat. She stared out the window, totally stunned. The massive lawns, the perfect gardens, the sheer size of the mansion, everything about this place screamed insane wealth and power. "How wealthy is your family, Annah?" Amilah asked, her voice barely a whisper as she gripped the strap of her handbag. Annah killed the engine, tossing her keys to a waiting valet. She let out a bright, melodic giggle. "Wealthy enough to make the country tremble if we have a bad day." The two women stepped out into the crisp evening air. Annah turned to one of the security guards standing at the grand entrance. "Please direct my friend to the ballroom at the back of the yard. I need to run up to my quarters to change." "Right away, Miss Vance," the guard replied with a respectful bow. As they walked down the winding stone pavement toward the back of the estate, Amilah tried to soothe the frantic beating of her heart. The scent of fresh midnight roses drifted through the air, perfectly framing the path. "We are here, ma'am," the guard said, stopping before a set of massive, towering double doors. Faint classical music and the low hum of upper-class laughter bled through the wood. Amilah stared at the closed doors and took a deep breath. She felt completely out of place, like she was walking into a world where she didn't belong. She looked down at the gift in her hands and the business proposal hidden in her bag. She had a job to do, hand the proposal to Annah's brother. "Thank you," Amilah told the guard, offering a small, nervous smile. "Can I... stay out here for just a moment? To catch my breath?" "Of course, ma'am. Take your time." The guard bowed slightly and stepped back into the shadows. Amilah double-checked that the proposal was safe in her bag, then stared at the beautifully wrapped box in her hands. How am I supposed to recognize his mother in a room full of hundreds of people? she thought anxiously. "Sweetheart? Are you lost?" The voice was sweet, soft, and carried an innate, effortless warmth. Amilah whirled around to find a stunning, elegant older woman standing a few feet away, dressed in a breathtaking midnight-blue silk gown. "Oh! No... I'm just..." Amilah stammered, the words dying in her throat. The woman smiled kindly. "Don't worry, you can walk in with me. Oh, where are my manners? I'm Daniella." She held out her hand. Amilah's heart skipped a beat. Daniella? As in... the psycho's mom? "I-I am Amilah. Amilah Miles," she managed to say, placing her hand in Daniella's. Daniella's eyes lit up instantly. "Amilah! It's really you? Oh, goodness, you look absolutely stunning in person!" Before Amilah could process the words, Daniella pulled her into a warm, fragrant hug. Amilah stiffened for a fraction of a second, completely stunned by the sudden, genuine affection, before slowly relaxing into it. "It is so wonderful to finally meet you, Amilah," Daniella said, pulling back with a beaming smile. "Nice to meet you too... Aunty," Amilah blushed. Daniella scoffed gently, waving her hand. "Oh, please! None of that 'Aunty' nonsense. Call me Mom." Amilah's face immediately flushed a deep crimson. To break the sudden wave of embarrassment, she quickly held out the wrapped box. "I... I got you a little something. The herbal soup recipe you sent last time really helped me feel better. I wanted to say thank you." Daniella looked at the gift as if it were made of solid gold. She was absolutely elated. A gift from her brilliant, beautiful future daughter-in-law! She could already envision herself bragging about it to her husband and rubbing it in his face. "Thank you so much, sweetheart," Daniella purred, slipping her arm through Amilah's. "Come, let's go inside and join the rest of the guests before Annah makes her grand entrance." "Okay," Amilah breathed. The heavy double doors swung open, and Daniella led the way. The moment Amilah stepped over the threshold and into the brilliant light of the ballroom, the entire room seemed to grind to a sudden, collective halt. The light from the massive crystal chandeliers hanging from the vaulted ceilings caught the fabric of her dress, making her natural beauty radiate like stardust. She walked elegantly beside Daniella, every step carrying a mysterious, effortless softness. Within seconds, the low hum of high-society gossip rippled through the crowd like wildfire. "Who is that girl?" "She's stunning... look at that dress." "Wait, isn't she the designer from the gala interview? "That explains it. Only a genius could pull off a silhouette like that." As the murmurs grew louder, Victoria Jackson and Rose Williams, who were sipping champagne near the ice sculptures, turned around to see what the commotion was about. When their eyes landed on Amilah, both women froze. Victoria's knuckles turned white around her glass. Even in her intense hatred, she couldn't deny how breathtakingly ethereal Amilah looked. It infuriated her. "What is that cheap slut doing here?" Victoria hissed, her voice dripping with venom. Beside her, Rose's hand involuntarily rose to touch her own cheek. A burning, blinding rage flared up in her chest as memories of how Amilah had publicly humiliated her came rushing back. Her grip on her wine glass tightened until the stem threatened to snap. But then, a wicked, venomous thought crossed her mind. Rose leaned in close to Victoria, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper meant only for their ears. "Don't you think this is the perfect opportunity to humiliate her? Think about it, Vicky. Lowin never shows up to these family events. She walked in here entirely unprotected." Victoria's ears perked up, a malicious gleam entering her eyes, but just as quickly, her shoulders slumped. Rose noticed the hesitation and smirked. "What's the matter? Don't tell me you're actually scared of a nobody like her?" "Why would I be scared?" Victoria snapped defensively. " I signed a strict contract with Lowin. If I cause a single public scandal before the six-month period ends, I have to hand over every single share of my father's company directly to him. I can't touch her." Rose's heart practically danced in her chest. Perfect, she thought. Absolutely perfect. "Well, if that's the case, we can just let her be," Rose said smoothly, acting disappointed. Victoria stomped her designer heel in frustration, turning away to blindly engage in conversation with a group of nearby socialites to distract herself. Seeing Victoria fully occupied, Rose pulled out her phone. A sinister smile played on her lips as she logged into an anonymous account. With practiced fingers, she typed out a scandalous, unverified tip and sent it directly to a notorious, bottom-feeding paparazzi editor, a man she knew would publish anything for clicks without bothering to check the facts. She slipped her phone back into her clutch and took a slow, victorious sip of her wine. Two birds with one stone, she thought. Victoria would take the fall, Amilah would be ruined, and Rose would remain completely blameless. Amilah slipped away to a quiet, empty table near the edge of the ballroom while Daniella went to greet a few arriving dignitaries. She took a glass of white wine from a passing waiter's tray, but a restless, anxious knot was tightening in her stomach. Why isn't he here yet? she wondered, her mind beginning to spiral. Did he lie to me? Was this all a joke to him? She still had a high-stakes business proposal to hand over, and she didn't even know what this formidable Lowin Vance looked like. She took a slow sip of her wine, feeling entirely out of place amidst the flashing jewelry and fake laughter. Suddenly, the grand doors opened again. Amilah's head snapped up, expecting to see a towering, dominant masculine figure. Instead, Annah Vance glided into the room. Annah looked spectacular. She wore a rich, chocolate-brown long-sleeved gown that hugged her delicate curves flawlessly. A dangerously high slit revealed a flash of fair skin with every confident step she took. The heiresses in the crowd immediately began whispering. "Isn't that the custom piece that's been trending on social media for months?" "It is! I tried to get it, but they said it's sold out until next month." "I guess being a Vance comes with ultimate privileges." Annah floated through the crowd, gracefully accepting birthday wishes from the elite guests. But the celebratory atmosphere was shattered in an instant. A sharp, breathless gasp echoed from one of the central tables. A young heiress stared at her phone, her eyes wide with shock as she read the top trending headline that had exploded across the internet in the last ten minutes. "Victoria Jackson and Lowin Vance have been secretly dating for a year?!" she read aloud, her voice carrying over the music. "What?" a chorus of voices demanded. The girl shoved her phone forward, and within seconds, a dozen women pulled out their own devices to confirm the gossip. "Wait, look at the update!" the girl squealed, her eyes darting over the screen. "It says the designer Amilah Miles from the gala literally drugged Lowin Vance just to force him into her bed!" "Now this is what I call high-society entertainment." "I knew it! I am so jealous of Victoria, but it makes sense. No wonder she's the undisputed face of the Vance Empire." Hearing the sudden wave of praises and validation washing over her, Victoria felt her ego swell to dangerous proportions. The fear of her contract completely vanished from her mind. I knew Lowin would come to his senses, she thought triumphantly. She turned sharply to Rose. "You see that? Lowin will always be mine," Victoria bragged, tossing her hair back. "I knew he was just using that little b***h. Now she's going to take the entire blame for what happened." Rose scoffed inwardly at Victoria's utter stupidity. Outwardly, she raised her glass with a sweet, plastic smile. "Congratulations, Vicky," she whispered. But in her head, she added, Congratulations on finally losing your entire inheritance. The whispers in the room quickly turned into ugly, venomous barbs directed at the edge of the room. "That designer is so shameless." "Climbing her way to the top by drugging powerful men... how pathetic." "I wondered how a nobody went viral overnight. I guess we know what her real talent is now." Amilah caught the vicious words drifting toward her. The room felt suddenly suffocating. Clutching her wine glass, she turned around, her eyes flashing with a quiet, dangerous fire. "If you have something to say about me," Amilah said, her voice steady and clear enough to cut through the chatter, "say it to my face. Not behind my back." The table of heiresses stiffened. "This little s**t actually has some nerve," one of them muttered under her breath. Noticing the tension, Annah quickly excused herself from her conversation and rushed over. "Amilah? What's happening?" "I have absolutely no idea," Amilah said, her hands beginning to tremble slightly. "Oh, please. Are you seriously going to play dumb, you cheap slut?" another lady sneered, stepping forward and shoving her glowing phone screen directly into Annah's face. Annah took the phone, her eyes scanning the scandalous article. Her heart skipped a violent beat. Before she could hide the screen, Amilah grabbed the phone from her hands. Amilah's eyes glued themselves to the harsh black text. Lowin Vance? She felt her knees go weak, the room spinning around her. I have never even met this man in my entire life! How could I have drugged him?! "You're nothing but a cheap home wrecker," a voice taunted from the crowd. "Drugging another woman's man because you couldn't get him on your own merits." "What do you expect from women who come straight out of the dumpsters?" "That is enough!" Amilah snapped, her voice cracking under the weight of the humiliation, though she forced herself to stand tall. "Do any of you have a single shred of actual proof that I did any of this?" Annah fiercely stepped between Amilah and the crowd. "Don't listen to them, Amilah. Come on, let's go." "It's okay, Annah," Amilah whispered, tears of frustration stinging the corners of her eyes. "Go enjoy your birthday party. I'm just going to go outside to get some air. Call me... call me when your brother finally arrives so I can hand over this proposal and leave." "I'm coming with you," Annah insisted, looking worriedly at her friend. "No, stay. Please. Don't let me ruin your special day." "But Amilah-" "Annah, I'll be fine," Amilah forced a soft smile, though it didn't reach her eyes. "I just really need a few moments alone." Annah hesitated, then nodded reluctantly. "Okay. Just... stay close." Amilah turned on her heel and practically fled the suffocating warmth of the ballroom. Seeking the quietest place possible, she spotted a stone staircase near the back corridor that led up to the secluded rooftop terrace overlooking the gardens. She began hurrying up the stairs when a sharp, venomous voice cut through the quiet air behind her. "I finally get to catch you alone, you cheap slut." Amilah chose to ignore it. She kept her head down, continuing up the stone steps, desperately trying to clear her mind. She pulled out her phone, checking her messages. Still nothing. No texts, no missed calls from that arrogant psycho who had promised to be here. A cold, heavy weight settled in her chest. He lied to me. It was all a game to him. Feeling completely ignored and insulted by Amilah's silence, Victoria's rage flared out of control. She stormed up the staircase behind her, her heavy heels clicking furiously against the stone. She aggressively pushed past Amilah at the top of the stairs, deliberately blocking her path right in front of the heavy iron door leading to the rooftop. "What, are you running away now?" Victoria mocked, her chest heaving with malice. "Aren't you even a little bit ashamed of yourself? Sleeping with another woman's man? You actually thought you could secure a position in the Vance Empire while I am still breathing? Let me tell you something, little girl, you are completely wrong. I will destroy you before you ever get close." Amilah felt a massive, pounding headache forming behind her eyes. She was exhausted, humiliated, and deeply hurt. She didn't have the energy to explain to this delusional woman that she wouldn't know Lowin Vance if he walked right past her. "I don't know what you're talking about," Amilah said, her voice dropping to a cold, tired whisper. "So please, excuse me." Amilah stepped forward, attempting to brush past Victoria to open the rooftop door. Seeing the utter lack of fear in Amilah's eyes, Victoria lost all rationality. Blinded by a sudden surge of adrenaline and fury, she lunged forward, grabbing Amilah's shoulder and shoving her backward with all her might. Amilah gasped as the violent force threw her off balance. Her slender stiletto heel slipped off the edge of the top stone step. She lost her footing completely. With a sharp cry, Amilah went tumbling backward down the steep, unforgiving stone staircase, her body crashing violently against the steps until she hit the hard marble landing at the bottom with a sickening thud. Up at the top of the stairs, Victoria stood frozen, her chest heaving up and down. A dark, satisfied smirk slowly crept onto her face. "That's what you get for messing with me," she breathed. She crossed her arms, waiting for Amilah to awkwardly push herself up, to cry, to beg, anything. But the silence that followed was absolute. "Hey," Victoria called out, her voice faltering slightly. "I didn't even push you that hard. Quit the acting." Amilah's body stayed completely, horrifyingly still. Panic suddenly seizing her throat, Victoria hurried down the stairs. She reached the bottom and roughly turned Amilah over. Her breath hitched. A dark crimson stream of blood was pooling from a sharp gash on Amilah's forehead, staining the cold floor. "s**t," Victoria whispered, her face draining of color. She whipped her head around wildly. The corridor was completely empty. No witnesses. Clutching her trembling hands together, Victoria straightened her dress, smoothed her hair, and quietly slipped back into the roaring light of the ballroom as if nothing had ever happened. --- Meanwhile, at the secluded Vance military base, the heavy iron doors of the briefing room swung open. Lowin Vance stepped out into the corridor, adjusting the cuffs of his tailored jacket. The intense meeting was finally adjourned. His dark eyes held a rare, faint glint of anticipation. He was finally ready to head to the party. Ready to see his little bird. But he had no idea that his little bird was currently lying alone on a freezing marble floor, her blood pooling in the dark, silently fighting for her life.
