The First Betrayal

988 Words
The courtyard of Valoria's royal palace had become a battlefield. The place that once represented strength and order was now filled with broken weapons, fallen guards, and the sound of magic tearing through the air. Kael Veyron stood at the center of it all. The Hollow Crown rested upon his head. For the first time, the world saw him not as a rumor. Not as a forgotten orphan. But as the last heir of Aurelian. And everyone was afraid. --- The woman beside the Crown Hunter stepped forward. Her dark robes moved with the wind, and her eyes carried the cold confidence of someone who had never doubted her own power. Seraphina's expression remained frozen. "You died." The woman smiled. "That is what I wanted everyone to believe." Kael looked between them. "Who is she?" Seraphina didn't answer immediately. The silence told him enough. "This is Lady Veyra." The woman bowed slightly. "Formerly known as the greatest scholar of Lyrien." Kael noticed the way Seraphina avoided looking at her. "You were her student." Seraphina's jaw tightened. "Yes." --- Veyra looked at Kael. "So this is the child everyone has been searching for." Kael raised his sword. "People keep calling me a child." A faint smile appeared on her face. "Because you still don't understand what you are." The crown reacted. A warning. Kael felt it immediately. Danger. --- The Crown Hunter attacked first. His blade moved faster than any ordinary warrior could follow. Kael blocked the strike, but the force pushed him backward. The hunter smiled. "You have the crown." Another strike. "But you don't have the experience." Kael struggled to keep up. The hunter was different from the others. Stronger. Faster. More prepared. Every attack was designed to force Kael into using the crown's power. And Kael knew exactly what would happen if he lost control. --- "Stop holding back." The hunter's voice echoed. "You're afraid of yourself." Kael gritted his teeth. He hated that the words were true. The crown offered power. A simple solution. Destroy the enemy. End the threat. But that was how kings fell. One easy decision at a time. --- Seraphina fought against Veyra. The two mages moved across the courtyard like forces of nature. Fire collided with darkness. Light clashed with shadows. "You taught me everything I know," Seraphina said. Veyra smiled. "And you still learned so little." A wave of dark magic threw Seraphina across the courtyard. "You believe magic exists to protect people." Veyra walked toward her. "Magic exists for those strong enough to control it." --- Meanwhile, Kael continued fighting. The Crown Hunter pressed harder. "You know why your empire fell?" Kael blocked another strike. "Because its ruler was weak?" The hunter laughed. "No." He pushed Kael back. "Because he trusted the wrong people." The words struck harder than the blade. Kael remembered the prophecy. The fallen empire. The betrayal. The crown. Everything was connected. --- Suddenly, the palace gates opened. A group of soldiers entered. Kael expected reinforcements. Instead, they pointed their weapons at him. Silence filled the courtyard. King Aldric stood behind them. Kael stared. "What are you doing?" The king's expression was cold. "Protecting my kingdom." Kael looked around. The soldiers were surrounding him. "You knew they were coming." Nobody answered. Darius stepped forward. His face was filled with disappointment. "King Aldric..." The king ignored him. "The moment Kael entered Valoria, we knew this would happen." Kael's eyes narrowed. "So you used me." "No." The king looked at the crown. "We studied you." --- The betrayal hurt more than Kael expected. Not because he trusted the king. He didn't. But because he had hoped someone would finally see him as a person. Not a weapon. Not a threat. Not a legend. Just Kael. "You were never going to help me." King Aldric said nothing. That was the answer. --- The Crown Hunter laughed. "Perfect." Everyone turned. "You have done our work for us." The hunter looked at Kael. "The kingdom you came to for answers has shown you the truth." A pause. "No one wants a king they cannot control." --- Something inside Kael changed. Not anger. Not hatred. Something colder. Understanding. He lowered his sword. The crown whispered. "They fear you." Kael answered silently. "Yes." "Then make them fear more." Kael closed his eyes. For a moment, he felt the crown trying to pull him. Trying to turn pain into power. Then he remembered Vaelor. The burning city. The fallen empire. "No." The crown became silent. --- Kael looked at King Aldric. "You made your choice." Then he looked at the Crown Hunter. "You made yours." Finally, he looked at Seraphina and Darius. They were the only ones who had stood beside him. The only ones who had treated him like more than a crown. "I'll make mine." The Hollow Crown released a wave of silver energy. The entire courtyard shook. Every soldier stepped back. Even the enemy hesitated. --- Kael walked forward. Not as a prince. Not as a king. As someone who had finally accepted himself. "I am not your weapon." His voice echoed across the palace. "I am not your curse." The crown burned brighter. "I decide what I become." --- The battle stopped. Because everyone realized something. The Hollow Crown had chosen him. But for the first time in a thousand years... The bearer had chosen himself. --- Far away, in the darkness of the Shadowlands, Malrik Voss opened his eyes. A smile formed on his face. "Interesting." The ancient being whispered: "The boy is stronger than the kings before him." A pause. "Which means breaking him will be far more satisfying." --- Kael had entered Valoria seeking the truth. Instead, he found betrayal. But betrayal had given him something more valuable than answers. It had given him a reason to fight. The heir had lost the kingdom's trust. Now he would build something of his own. To be continued...
