The Shadow Behind The Throne

1016 Words
The royal palace of Valoria had never witnessed such silence. Only minutes earlier, the courtyard had been filled with soldiers, enemies, and the clash of magic. Now everyone stood frozen. Not because the battle was over. But because they had witnessed something impossible. The bearer of the Hollow Crown had refused its power. --- Kael Veyron stood beneath the palace walls, surrounded by enemies. The king's soldiers. The Crown Hunters. The nobles who feared him. Yet for the first time since discovering the crown, Kael felt something he had not felt before. Control. The crown was no longer pulling him. It was listening. And that difference changed everything. --- King Aldric stared at him. "You have no idea what you are doing." Kael looked at the king. "Maybe." A pause. "But neither did the kings before me." The words struck harder than any weapon. Because everyone knew the history. Every ruler who had worn the Hollow Crown had eventually fallen. --- The Crown Hunter tightened his grip on his weapon. "This changes nothing." He stepped forward. "The crown must be destroyed." Kael looked at him. "Then why are you trying so hard to take it?" The hunter said nothing. Kael noticed. A weakness. A truth hidden beneath their hatred. "You don't want the crown gone." The hunter's expression changed. "You want it." --- Seraphina looked at him carefully. "Kael..." He understood. The Crown Hunters were not simply hunting the crown. They were protecting a secret. A secret that was worth killing for. --- Before anyone could move, the palace shook. A deep sound echoed from beneath the ground. Not an explosion. Something worse. Something awakening. The soldiers looked around in fear. "What was that?" Darius stepped forward. His face became serious. "Something beneath the palace." King Aldric's expression changed. For the first time, Kael saw fear in the king's eyes. Real fear. --- Kael looked at him. "You know what that is." The king remained silent. "Tell me." Aldric looked away. "There are things in this world that should remain buried." Kael stepped closer. "And yet you built your kingdom on top of them." Silence. The king's answer came quietly. "The Aurelian Empire was not destroyed above ground." Everyone looked at him. "It fell because of what was beneath it." --- The ground cracked. Stone walls split apart. From beneath the palace, ancient symbols began glowing. The same symbols Kael had seen beneath the ruins. Aurelian symbols. Seraphina whispered: "Impossible." Darius looked at her. "What?" She stared at the markings. "The palace was built on an ancient Aurelian fortress." --- Kael felt the crown react. Not with fear. Recognition. A memory entered his mind. A young Vaelor standing in the same chamber. A secret meeting. A group of nobles kneeling before him. And a voice saying: "The kingdom above must never know what sleeps below." --- Kael returned to reality. "What is beneath this palace?" No one answered. Then a voice came from the darkness. "Something that was never meant to awaken." --- A figure stepped from the broken ground. Not a soldier. Not a monster. A man. He wore ancient black armor covered in symbols older than any kingdom. His eyes were empty. His presence made the air feel heavier. The Crown Hunters immediately lowered their weapons. Even they feared him. --- Kael stared. "Who are you?" The man looked at the crown. Then smiled. "My name has been forgotten." A pause. "But history once called me..." The air grew colder. "The Shadow Knight." --- Seraphina stepped back. "No..." Kael looked at her. "You know him too?" Her voice was quiet. "He served the last emperor." Darius tightened his grip on his sword. "That is impossible." The Shadow Knight looked at them. "Many things are impossible until they happen." --- Kael raised his weapon. "If you served Vaelor, why are you here?" The Shadow Knight looked at the crown. "To see whether the new king is worthy." Kael frowned. "I am not a king." The Shadow Knight smiled. "That is exactly what makes you dangerous." --- Suddenly, the palace doors opened. A group of nobles entered. But they were not Valorian nobles. They wore black robes. The symbol of the broken crown was embroidered on their clothing. The Crown Hunters were not alone. They had people inside the kingdom. People close to the throne. --- Kael looked at King Aldric. "You knew." The king said nothing. "You knew there were people inside your own palace working against you." Aldric's expression hardened. "I knew there were threats." Kael looked around. "And you still allowed them to grow." The king lowered his eyes. For the first time, Kael realized something. The king was not the most powerful person in Valoria. He was a man trying to survive a game much older than himself. --- The Shadow Knight looked at Kael. "Your journey begins now." Kael frowned. "What does that mean?" "The crown has awakened." A pause. "Now the world will come for you." The Shadow Knight disappeared into the darkness. Leaving behind only one message: "Find the truth of Aurelian before the truth destroys you." --- That night, Kael stood above the city of Valoria. The kingdom below was beautiful. But beneath the beauty were secrets. Betrayals. Ancient dangers. He had come looking for answers. Instead, he found a world built on lies. Seraphina stood beside him. "You realize there is no going back now." Kael looked at the Hollow Crown. "I know." Darius joined them. "Then what will you do?" Kael looked beyond the walls. Toward the unknown lands beyond Valoria. Toward the enemies waiting for him. Toward the destiny he never asked for. "Learn the truth." A pause. "And build something that cannot be destroyed." --- Deep beneath the Shadowlands, Malrik Voss opened an ancient book. The final page contained one sentence. The heir has chosen his path. The Void Emperor smiled. "Good." Darkness surrounded him. "Now I can finally begin." --- The secrets beneath Valoria had been revealed. But the greatest secret was still hidden. The truth of the Hollow Crown. To be continued...
