Chapter 6: A dance With Danger.

1087 Words
The room shrank around Serena, her breath coming in short, sharp bursts. The sight of Cole drawing a gun sent a shiver down her spine. This wasn’t paranoia. This was real. “Get down,” Cole ordered, his voice razor-sharp. Serena’s body reacted before her mind caught up. She dropped to the floor, pressing herself against the couch as her heart pounded like a war drum in her chest. The shadows outside her window moved. A flicker of motion—quick, calculated. Whoever was out there wasn’t just lurking. They were watching. Waiting. Cole moved with the precision of a predator, silent but deadly, his eyes locked on the window. The gun in his hand looked like an extension of his body, a tool he was more than comfortable using. Serena swallowed hard. “Who is it?” she whispered. Cole didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he reached for his phone with his free hand, pressing a single button. “Blackwood,” he said, his voice low but urgent. Serena’s stomach twisted. Damian. Within seconds, Damian’s voice cut through the tension like a blade. “What happened?” “Possible intruder,” Cole reported. “West perimeter. Watching her apartment.” A pause. Then, Damian’s voice dropped to something lethal. “Contain it.” Two words. Two deadly words. Cole didn’t hesitate. “Understood.” He slipped toward the door, his movements smooth, controlled. Serena had never seen someone so utterly focused, so unshaken in the face of danger. Then, he turned to her. “Stay here. Don’t move.” Serena grabbed his wrist before she could think better of it. “Wait—what if there’s more than one?” Cole’s eyes softened for just a second—then the steel returned. “Then I hope they know how to pray.” And then he was gone. The Streets Below Cole moved like a ghost, his feet silent against the pavement as he rounded the building’s side entrance. The alley was dark, a perfect hiding place for someone who didn’t want to be seen. But Cole wasn’t looking for someone hiding. He was looking for someone hunting. He scanned the shadows, his grip firm on the gun. His years in the military had taught him one thing—fear was the enemy of precision. And right now, he needed to be precise. Then, he saw it. A figure near the back fence. Dressed in black, moving fast. Not fast enough. Cole surged forward, closing the distance in seconds. The man barely had time to turn before Cole slammed him against the wall, his forearm pinning him in place. “Who sent you?” Cole growled. The man struggled, but Cole pressed harder. “You have five seconds before I make you regret every life choice that led you here.” The man spat on the ground. “You don’t scare me.” Cole smirked. “Then you’re dumber than you look.” He twisted the man’s wrist just enough to make pain shoot through his arm. The intruder hissed but didn’t break. “Tough guy, huh?” Cole muttered. Then, a voice cut through the night. “Let him go.” Cole froze. Another figure stepped out of the shadows, his face partially hidden by the dim streetlight. But Cole recognized the stance, the air of control. This wasn’t just some random stalker. This was something bigger. The man smirked. “Tell Blackwood he’s not the only one playing this game.” Then, before Cole could react, the man threw something to the ground. A flash grenade. Light exploded, blinding him for a fraction of a second. When his vision cleared, they were gone. Cole cursed. This wasn’t just a warning. It was a declaration of war. Serena’s Apartment – Moments Later Serena paced the living room, her nerves stretched thin. The silence was worse than the chaos. Then, the door burst open. Cole strode in, his expression grim. He holstered his gun but didn’t relax. “Pack a bag.” Serena frowned. “Excuse me?” “You’re leaving.” She shook her head. “What? No. I’m not going anywhere until you tell me what’s going on.” Cole exhaled, clearly frustrated. “Serena, we don’t have time for this.” She planted her feet. “Then make time.” Cole clenched his jaw. Then, finally, he spoke. “This wasn’t just some random creep. This was planned.” Serena’s blood ran cold. “Planned by who?” Cole hesitated. “We don’t know yet. But someone sent a message to Blackwood tonight.” She felt the air leave her lungs. “A message?” Cole nodded. “And trust me, Damian doesn’t take threats lightly.” Serena’s heart pounded. She barely knew Damian’s world, but something told her that if someone was willing to go after her, they had just made the worst mistake of their lives. And so had she. Because now, she was truly trapped. Not just in Damian’s world. But in his war. Sterling Enterprises – Midnight Damian stood behind his desk, fingers steepled, as Adrian laid out the details. “They weren’t just watching,” Adrian said. “They were testing us. Seeing how close they could get.” Damian’s jaw ticked. “And?” Adrian’s eyes darkened. “Closer than they should have.” Damian exhaled, barely containing the rage boiling beneath his skin. Whoever had done this had made a grave error. Because Serena wasn’t just some woman. She was his. And anyone who touched her would suffer for it. He picked up his phone and dialed. Cole answered on the first ring. “She’s safe,” Cole said before Damian could ask. “Good,” Damian said coldly. “Because from now on, she doesn’t leave your sight.” Cole hesitated. “Damian—” Damian’s voice was ice. “I don’t care if she fights you on it. If she breathes, you know about it. If she moves, you follow. If she so much as thinks she’s alone, remind her that she isn’t.” Silence. Then, Cole sighed. “Understood.” Damian hung up. Then, he turned to Adrian. “Find out who they are,” he ordered. “And when you do?” Adrian smirked, but there was no humor in it. “I’ll make sure they wish they never existed.” Damian nodded once. Whoever had dared to threaten Serena had just signed their death warrant. And Damian Blackwood never left debts unpaid. ---
