Whispers in the Dark

Chapter 19 Serena stood by the grand window of the CEO’s penthouse, staring at the city lights that flickered like a thousand tiny stars. The skyline stretched endlessly, a mixture of beauty and chaos, much like her life at the moment. She placed a hand on her belly, feeling the faint stirrings of life within. It was still early, but she knew—their child was strong, just like its father. The thought of Damien Cross sent shivers down her spine. Not from fear, but from the undeniable force he carried with him. A billionaire, ruthless in the boardroom yet tender in private. The way he looked at her sometimes made her heart pound like a drum in the still of the night. Yet, there were things he wasn’t telling her—secrets lurking in the shadows of his world. The wind howled against the glass as if warning her. Just then, a deep voice rumbled behind her. “You’re awake.” Serena turned to see Damien, his chiseled frame leaning casually against the doorframe. His suit jacket was undone, and his tie loosened, but even in his relaxed state, power radiated from him. His dark eyes, intense and unreadable, swept over her. “I couldn’t sleep,” she admitted. He stepped forward, his gaze dropping to her belly. “Are you feeling alright?” She nodded, but he wasn’t convinced. Damien wasn’t a man who took half-truths lightly. Serena hesitated before whispering, “I feel like I’m standing at the edge of something, but I don’t know what.” Damien’s jaw tensed. He walked over to the bar, poured himself a glass of whiskey, and took a slow sip. “That’s because you are,” he said, his voice laced with something unreadable. A chill ran through her. “What do you mean?” He exhaled, setting his glass down with a soft clink. “There are things you don’t know, Serena. Things I’ve tried to keep from you—for your safety.” Her heart pounded. “Damien, I can’t be in the dark anymore. Not when I’m carrying your child.” His gaze sharpened, and for a moment, she saw the battle in his eyes—the conflict between protecting her and telling her the truth. Then, after what felt like an eternity, he sighed. “I received a threat tonight.” Serena’s blood ran cold. “A threat?” He nodded. “Someone knows about you. About the baby.” She felt the air leave her lungs. “Who?” Damien’s eyes darkened. “If I knew, they’d already be buried six feet under.” The raw promise in his voice sent a shiver through her. He wasn’t exaggerating. Damien Cross was a man who didn’t play games. When he made a threat, he followed through. Serena swallowed. “What… what did the threat say?” He pulled out his phone and handed it to her. On the screen was a message. “The Cross bloodline ends with you. She’ll never give birth.” Serena’s hands shook. “This is—” “An open declaration of war,” Damien finished. She looked up at him, fear clawing at her chest. “Damien, what have you gotten me into?” His hands cupped her face gently, his thumbs stroking her cheeks. “I promise you, Serena, no one will lay a hand on you or our baby. I’d burn the entire world down before I let that happen.” His words sent a mix of fear and comfort through her. She believed him. But at what cost? Before she could speak, a loud bang echoed from downstairs. Damien’s entire body tensed. His protective instincts kicked in immediately. “Stay here,” he ordered. “Damien—” “I said stay.” His voice was steel, leaving no room for argument. Serena watched in horror as he grabbed a gun from a drawer and disappeared into the darkness. Her pulse raced. Whispers in the dark had become real threats. And tonight, danger had come knocking.
