Chapter One
Rowan
The prophecy had been woven into my family's history long before I was born.
"When darkness threatens the packs, one of your daughters shall bring forth the Silver Wolf. Blessed by Selene herself, the child shall command wolves beyond bloodlines, heal what has long been broken, and become the Alpha above all Alphas."
The elders spoke those words as though they were sacred scripture. My parents and every wolf in the pack believed they already knew who the prophecy referred to.
My older sister.
Seraphina Grey had been born extraordinary. At twenty-two, she possessed the kind of beauty people wrote songs about. Her silver-blonde hair shimmered beneath the moon, her golden eyes held quiet authority, and her wolf was as graceful as she was powerful. She had mastered shifting years before most wolves her age, and every victory she earned only strengthened everyone's belief that the Moon Goddess had chosen her for greatness.
The warriors admired her.
The elders praised her.
My parents couldn't have been prouder.
Standing beside her often felt like standing beside the moon itself.
No one noticed the stars.
I was Rowan Grey.
Nineteen years old.
The younger daughter everyone politely overlooked.
My wolf had never been particularly strong. My shifts took longer than they should have, and while the other young wolves transformed with confidence beneath the moonlight, I usually needed several painful attempts before my wolf answered my call. The faint silver flecks hidden within my eyes had fascinated people when I was younger, but the curiosity eventually faded. They were simply another odd thing about Rowan Grey, the disappointing younger daughter who never quite lived up to her sister.
I had stopped trying to compete years ago.
Instead, I found comfort in quieter places.
Most mornings were spent in the healing gardens alongside Elder Mira, tending medicinal herbs, drying flowers, and preparing remedies for injured warriors. She rarely spoke unless she had something worth saying, but I liked the peaceful silence between us.
Tonight, however, there would be no quiet gardens or peaceful silence.
The full moon hung high above Moonlit Grove, bathing the arena in silver light. Wolves from every corner of the territory had gathered for the annual Mating Revel, a sacred celebration during which the Moon Goddess sometimes revealed fated bonds.
Music drifted through the trees.
Bonfires cracked as laughter mingled with distant howls.
Young unmated wolves gathered near the center of the grove, hopeful smiles brightening nervous faces.
I remained near the edge of the celebration, smoothing invisible wrinkles from the simple white dress Elder Mira had insisted I wear.
"You never know what the Goddess has planned," she'd told me earlier with a mysterious smile.
I had laughed softly.
"The Goddess has never been particularly interested in me."
Elder Mira had only smiled wider.
Now, as I watched wolves dancing beneath the moonlight, my fingers absentmindedly traced the delicate silver bracelet wrapped around my wrist.
Damien had made it.
Years ago, when we were both sixteen, he'd disappeared into the forest for nearly an entire afternoon. I hadn't understood why until he returned carrying thin strands of enchanted silver vine.
He'd woven them carefully with his own hands before fastening the bracelet around my wrist.
"When we're finally mates," he'd whispered with that familiar crooked grin, "I'll replace this with my mark."
I'd laughed, embarrassed by the confidence in his voice.
"What if the Moon Goddess has someone else planned for you?"
He'd gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear.
"Then I'll spend the rest of my life convincing her she made the wrong choice."
Even now, remembering those words made warmth bloom inside my chest.
Perhaps...
Perhaps tonight would finally be the night.
Across the grove, Seraphina stood surrounded by admirers, looking every bit the future Luna everyone expected her to become. Her emerald gown clung elegantly to her figure, and every movement she made seemed effortless.
She noticed me watching.
A graceful smile curved her lips before she inclined her head ever so slightly.
To everyone else, it looked affectionate.
I knew better.
That smile had always carried quiet victory.
She had everything.
She always would.
I looked away before the familiar ache settled too deeply inside my chest.
The sound of approaching footsteps drew everyone's attention. Conversations faded and music stopped.
Even the wind seemed to still.
Alpha Damien George entered the grove.
He walked with calm confidence, his broad shoulders squared beneath a black ceremonial coat embroidered with silver thread. Dark hair fell carelessly across his forehead, softening features that were otherwise carved with sharp, masculine angles.
His gray eyes swept across the gathering with effortless authority, and every warrior instinctively straightened as he passed.
At twenty-five, Damien had already become one of the strongest alpha leaders in recent history. He had secured alliances neighboring packs had failed to achieve for decades, strengthened our borders, and earned unwavering loyalty through courage rather than fear.
To everyone else, he was an alpha worthy of admiration.
To me...
He was the boy who had shared his honey cake because I couldn't stop crying.
The boy who had sat beside me through every lesson at the academy.
The boy who had stepped between me and every cruel laugh when the other children compared me to Seraphina.
"If you want someone to laugh at," fourteen-year-old Damien had snapped at them with surprising fury, "laugh at me instead."
No one in pack school had dared tease me after that.
As we grew older, friendship quietly became something far more dangerous.
On clear nights, we escaped beyond the northern training grounds and sat beneath the old moon tree, speaking about futures neither of us could see.
One evening, he'd turned toward me with a smile that made my heart stumble.
"Do you ever think we'll be fated mates?"
I remembered laughing to hide how desperately I wanted the answer to be yes.
"What if we're not?"
"Then I'll keep chasing you until you finally agree to be mine."
I had rolled my eyes, pretending not to blush.
"And if I still refuse?"
His fingers had gently brushed a strand of hair behind my ear.
"Then I'll ask again tomorrow."
"And the day after?"
"Every day," he'd murmured, never looking away from my eyes. "Because I already know who I want beside me."
"What makes you so certain?"
"The Moon Goddess wouldn't let me love you this much just to give you to someone else."
I had believed every word.
Every promise.
Every dream we'd quietly built together.
So when Damien's gray eyes found mine across the moonlit clearing, my heart forgot how to beat.
The world disappeared.
A brilliant golden thread stretched between us, binding soul to soul.
My wolf surged forward with overwhelming joy.
Mate.
Every hopeful dream.
Every heated touch we'd shared.
They had all led to this moment.
A smile trembled onto my lips as Damien began walking toward me. Hope swelled so fiercely inside my chest that it almost hurt.
He was finally coming to keep his promise.
He stopped only a step away.
For the briefest heartbeat, warmth flickered inside his gray eyes.
Then it vanished.
His jaw tightened.
Every trace of tenderness vanished, replaced by the cold, impassive expression of an Alpha about to pass judgment before his entire pack.
"I am sorry, Rowan."
I froze, my mind struggling to grasp what he meant. Surely... he couldn't be saying what I thought he was.
Then he spoke again, his voice calm, steady, and utterly devoid of emotion.
"I, Alpha Damien George," he declared, his words carrying effortlessly across the silent grove, "reject you, Rowan Grey, as my fated mate."
The words shattered something inside me.
Agony exploded through the bond connecting our souls, tearing across my chest with unbearable force. It felt as though invisible claws were ripping my heart apart from the inside. My knees nearly buckled beneath me as I clutched at my chest, struggling to breathe while my wolf released a broken cry that echoed through every corner of my mind.
Tears blurred my vision.
Still, I forced myself to remain standing.
Hundreds of eyes watched me.
I would not collapse before them.
Without sparing me another glance, Damien turned away.
He walked directly toward Seraphina.
My sister stepped forward with practiced elegance, sympathy softening her beautiful features just enough to convince everyone watching that she regretted my humiliation.
She didn't.
She never had.
Damien reached for her hand.
"The woman I choose," he announced before the entire pack, "is Seraphina Grey. She is the one worthy of standing beside me. She is the woman destined to fulfill the ancient prophecy and give birth to the Silver Wolf."
Thunderous cheers erupted throughout the grove. Howls rose toward the heavens.
Warriors struck their chests in celebration.
My parents' faces glowed with pride as they looked upon their eldest daughter, certain that destiny had unfolded exactly as the prophecy intended.
No one looked at me.
No one saw the shattered girl still standing only a few steps away.
Damien drew Seraphina into his arms before lowering his head to kiss her beneath the full moon.
It wasn't a hesitant kiss.
It was possessive.
A declaration to the entire pack that she belonged to him.
I turned away before the tears spilling down my face became impossible to hide.
How could he do this?
We had loved each other.
At least...
I had believed we did.
Only moments earlier, I had been certain fate was finally rewarding years of waiting.
Now, I understood that some promises were far easier to make than they were to keep.
