Two hours after Roberta names Jack, I stand outside Matheus and Valentina’s home.
Ucker waits in the car with the files. I leave the security team at the end of the street.
If Anny is here, I will not surround the house before I ask permission to enter it.
Matheus opens the door.
Whatever greeting he might have offered disappears when he sees me.
“She isn’t here,” he says.
“I know.”
“Then you have no reason to be.”
“Jack is alive.”
Matheus’s hand remains on the door, but he no longer closes it.
Valentina appears behind him, one hand resting on the curve of her pregnancy. “What did you say?”
“Jack Adams is alive. He is the father of Roberta’s child, and he told her Anny would run to Argentina.”
They exchange a look.
