Chapter Seven
The following day, the press conference was set. The anticipation had been building all morning, with reporters swarming the Young Group headquarters. Outside, cameras flashed as media outlets speculated about the truth behind the rumors. Inside, Chris stood tall, his presence commanding as he adjusted the cuffs of his tailored suit.
Madeline sat beside him in a private lounge, her fingers twisting together as she tried to steady her nerves. She trusted Chris, but the weight of public scrutiny still pressed heavily on her shoulders.
Chris placed his hand over hers. "Are you sure you want to do this? You don’t have to stand beside me. I can handle this on my own."
Madeline met his gaze and shook her head. "No. We do this together. I won’t let them push me out of your life."
A slow, proud smile touched his lips. "Then let’s end this."
The conference room was packed. Rows of journalists and photographers sat poised, eager for a statement that would either confirm or deny the speculation. A large screen behind the podium displayed the Young Group logo, a reminder that this was Chris’s domain.
As he stepped forward, the room hushed. Chris exuded confidence, but there was a fire in his eyes—a warning to those who dared to cross him.
"Let me be clear," he began, his voice firm, "the rumors regarding my supposed engagement to Sophia Liang are completely false. There is no engagement. There is no secret relationship. There never will be."
Murmurs rippled through the audience, but Chris wasn’t finished. "The only woman I love, the only woman I will ever love, is Madeline Shaw."
A gasp came from the crowd. Cameras clicked furiously. But Chris didn’t flinch.
Madeline inhaled sharply. Though she had known what he was going to say, hearing it declared so boldly in front of the world sent a rush of warmth through her.
"Certain individuals have attempted to manipulate the truth for their own gain," Chris continued, his tone unwavering. "And I won’t allow it. My business, my life, and my relationships are not for sale. If anyone thinks they can control my choices with lies and deception, they are sorely mistaken."
A reporter in the front row raised a hand. "Mr. Young, are you suggesting that Sophia Liang or Sean Davis are behind these allegations?"
Chris’s jaw tightened, but before he could answer, Madeline stood up.
"What he’s saying is that our past does not define us. Neither Chris nor I will be manipulated by people who refuse to let go of what was never meant to be." Her voice was steady, resolute. "We will not be broken."
The room erupted into a frenzy of questions, but Chris placed a protective hand on her back and guided her away from the podium. Their statement had been made. The truth was out.
As they exited, Chris leaned in, whispering near her ear. "You just silenced an entire room of reporters."
Madeline smirked. "I guess I learned from the best."
But as they stepped into the hallway, Jonathan approached with a grave expression. "Sir, there’s something you need to see."
He handed Chris a tablet.
As Chris read the headline, his expression darkened. Madeline peered over his shoulder, her stomach twisting at the sight of the breaking news:
SEAN DAVIS MAKES SHOCKING CLAIM: ‘CHRIS YOUNG HAS A DARK SECRET.’
Madeline felt the air leave her lungs. Just when they thought they had won this battle, Sean had made his next move.

Chris’s grip on the tablet tightened, his jaw clenching as he scanned the article. Madeline watched as the muscles in his neck tensed, his anger barely contained beneath the surface. She could feel her own pulse quicken, dread coiling in her stomach.
"What the hell is Sean playing at now?" she whispered, stepping closer to Chris.
Jonathan shifted uncomfortably. "He’s claiming he has information that could destroy you, Chris. He gave an exclusive interview—said he’d be revealing the full extent of it in a live broadcast tomorrow."
Chris exhaled sharply, his fingers flexing before he set the tablet down on the conference table. "This is a bluff. It has to be. He’s desperate."
Madeline crossed her arms, her mind racing. "Even if it is, people will eat it up. He’s trying to shift the narrative back in his favor."
Jonathan nodded. "He’s already stirring up speculation online. People are wondering if there’s some dark past you’ve been hiding."
Chris let out a dry chuckle, shaking his head. "I’ve got nothing to hide. But that doesn’t mean he won’t twist something from my past into a scandal."
Madeline reached for his hand. "Then we need to be ready. We can’t let him blindside us."
Chris squeezed her fingers gently, his eyes meeting hers. "I won’t let him drag us through the mud. He wants to play dirty? Fine. We’ll be one step ahead."
The rest of the day was spent in damage control. Chris’s legal team and PR specialists worked tirelessly to dissect Sean’s claims before he could make them public. Calls were made, sources investigated, but no one could pin down exactly what Sean had on Chris.
By evening, exhaustion had settled over both Chris and Madeline. They sat in his penthouse, the city lights flickering in the distance as they tried to make sense of everything.
"What do you think he has?" Madeline asked softly, sipping her tea.
Chris sighed, leaning back against the couch. "I don’t know. My past isn’t perfect, but there’s nothing that should justify a so-called ‘dark secret.’"
Madeline hesitated before speaking. "What about your time in the military? Could he have found something from back then?"
Chris frowned. "I doubt it. My records are sealed, and even if he did find something, it wouldn’t be scandal-worthy."
A beat of silence passed between them before Madeline spoke again. "Then maybe it’s not about you. Maybe it’s about someone close to you."
Chris’s expression darkened at the thought. "If he’s going after my family or the company, I swear—"
Before he could finish, his phone buzzed. An unknown number.
He hesitated, then answered. "Who is this?"
A familiar voice filled the line. "I told you, Chris. You should’ve never underestimated me."
Sean.
Chris’s hand curled into a fist. "What the hell do you want?"
Sean chuckled. "Just calling to give you a friendly warning before tomorrow’s broadcast. Hope you’re ready to see everything you’ve built come crashing down."
Chris’s eyes darkened. "You’re bluffing."
"Am I?" Sean’s voice was laced with amusement. "Guess we’ll find out."
The line went dead.
Chris slowly lowered the phone, his heartbeat pounding in his ears. Madeline watched him carefully, her own breath unsteady. "Chris?"
He exhaled through his nose, his fury barely contained. "Tomorrow, everything changes."
Madeline set her tea down, reaching for him. "Then we face it together."
Chris pulled her close, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "Always."
But deep down, he knew—whatever Sean had planned, it wouldn’t be something they could easily walk away from.
