Chapter 4Pax They didn’t truly discuss what might happen next. Pax simply looked at Mars as they left the restaurant, tipped his head toward the elevators, and started walking. Mars followed along. They exchanged a few comments about the still-busy gaming floor and how much less awful it was now that the rooms weren’t clogged up with cigarette smoke. Then, in the elevator on the way up, Pax confessed to smoking a little dope here and there. Mars gave him such a look. “Ain’t everybody do that?” “Few times a year,” Pax said, grinning, as they stepped into the hallway. “I always feel it in my throat but it’s a different kind of chill from booze or, like, Xanax. You know?” “Yeah, I know.” They’d reached his room. Pax opened the door and went in, holding it open for Mars. “We should talk.”
