Catch Me If You Can
Emotions ran deep among the several parties assembled outside Finkle’s dwelling. Knygel, his captain, and Tuppence had yet to be convinced that Finkle was truly deceased and that his corpse was a wizard’s magical fake. In addition, Kandar’s appearance and Esmerelda’s arrival had totally diverted them from their intended purpose. Knygel waved off the Captain’s request to put her in chains and instead called him and Tuppence to the side, out of earshot, to parley among themselves.
Though under heavy guard, Esmerelda and Kandar were left to their own devices. Two of the king’s men stood over Kandar, so he dared not get up, but he did glance at Esmerelda with scowls and other visual insults. Esmerelda returned the same looks as discreetly as she dared.
