It was a peaceful night; the air carried the aroma of jasmine plants, which flowered through the avenue. Elena walked slowly down the street, head held close to her body, clutching the notebook. The words of the letter from Adrian were still echoing in her mind; soon he would be going away. He had not utterly revealed the truth to her. She needed someone to help her, and she knew who. Lady Evelyn sat waiting for her in the humble cottage in the outskirts of the village. “I can see you are worried about me, my dear,” said Evelyn as she took Elena through a doorway into the small cottage. A familiar aroma of fresh herbs and old paper filled the air, making Elena feel safe and at ease. She sat by the fire, which crackled happily, and showed Evelyn the letter Adrian had sent. “He told me he was leaving, and he was secretive. I do not know what to do,” she whispered.
I think it might be one of the burdensome secrets,” said Evelin, reading the note. But try and trust me; secrets aren't all evil. For fear, sometimes people tend to hide. What's your opinion about Adrian, tell me, Elena? Elena gazed directly into Evelyn‘s eyes and, at the top of her lungs, with tears dropping from her eyes, exclaimed, ‘With him I listen and I understand. But he has doubts, constantly. The more he is hiding something, the more I am listening to his doubts. People who surround me, first his fiancée Sophia, then my brother Marcus, will “convince” me that he is a villain, but I do not want to see any evil in him. In his letter he hasn't told me everything, but maybe I should read between the lines.'
“Listen to your heart, child,” Evelyn said as she grasped Elena‘s hand. “Listen to your heart and it will teach you what to do. Your heart knows best. Don‘t let people, their problems, and their fears make the decisions for you. Listen to the feeling in your heart, for it will guide you.” Keeping in mind Evelyn’s last words, Elena stepped back into the bright and nice moonlit area of the meadow. She saw Adrian sitting under the big tree and playing his guitar, which was lying beside him. He looked up with a glimmer of hope and sadness when he saw Elena. "Elena," he nearly spoke to himself, "you are here.” She got up to him and held the letter between her hands and stroked across it and said, "Adrian, the letter you have in your hand says such sincere things about you, about the fears that push you to leave me." Tell me, though, why didn‘t you have faith in me?”
Adrian looked up at her, and standing, he said, “I knew that if you read this letter, you would see the real me and distance yourself from me before I had the opportunity to really prove myself to you.” "And what of the words 'Sophia' and 'Marcus'?" asked Elena. "They warned me about you and told me that loving you was foolish. Were you complicit in their lies? "Sophia is denying that there is a relationship between us because she is afraid of losing you," Adrian told me. "Marcus does not want me to have what he does not, and so he is lying and manipulating you into hating me. I can‘t do anything about that evil rhetoric of theirs, but I can say one thing, Elena: I love you, and I would be gone if it were not for you. You inspired me, and if you are willing to give me another chance, I will swear on everything that I will never leave you; I will never fail you!
Elena gazed deeply into Adrian‘s eyes, which were clouded with tears. "If you really love me, Adrian. You have to...you have to give me everything. Your past. I shall always be here. I just... I need you to trust me. To know that I see right through your... lies.' Adrian sighed and gazed at the sky. “There is one thing I haven‘t told you. One thing that happened a long time ago will always stay in me. One day I met your grandmother. She was very kind to me, such a welcoming woman. She brought me into her house. Told me many things about you, even about poetry. Said you were a very talented girl, as your words built a bright light for you and shone it to the world. I found the book of your poetry that day, and then I knew she was right about you. I attempt to return it to you, but the storm was there before I got the chance."‘My grandma?’ Eléna whispered, astonished. ‘She told you I had a journal?’
Adrian‘s face was strange as he stared at her. ‘Yes, she did. She thought that one day your words would make the world a better place; she thought you would find someone who loved you through the years and the seasons, who would love your poetry as much as she loved having it in her heart. I wanted to be that person. But I couldn‘t believe that I was worthy of you; in fact, your grandmother‘s graciousness only made me worse, and so I penned that letter, thinking that perhaps one day I would be able to make you mine. Elena was speechless; everything was confusing. There was that love in Adrian‘s eyes, a voice that expressed the love, yet there was something inside her that was blocking the way, blocking Adrian. She thought about what her grandmother once told her, how she was always encouraging her to write her poetry, and how she believed in what she dreamed of and in her own heart. To know that her beloved Adrian shared the same feelings with his grandmother made Elena feel even close to him. "Adrian, why then didn't you tell me that you love me?” Elena asked. I was worried if I told you, you would think I was just cutting and pasting your grandmother‘s words to try and win you on his behalf. I wanted you to be sure on your own that I loved you; you were the only girl in my heart." Adrian replied.
The moonlight cut through Elena‘s emotion and brought tears to her eyes as she said, "It feels as if you have betrayed me... It does not matter what you felt and what you did not feel. Tell me everything. This secret, along with your letter, was the last stone on the path of betrayal; you should have known that deep down in your heart. You should have told me that! With that, she looked at him with a strange and saddened smile on her lips and said, "However, I am happy to hear the truth because now I know why it happened." Adrian held her hands. "I am happy to know this. I wish you had known before that I had not kept this from you, but the time has come for me to tell you my feelings for you, for your grandmother, and for all those that loved you. I wanted you to know because your grandmother loved you and so did I, telling stories about yourself when we were with each other.” Elena said, “You should have known I was going to love you anyway. No matter what happened, no matter what you thought or felt, it only mattered in the end that I forgive you, and I am going to do that because I understand what you felt now. I‘m always going to be here, listening to your heart.” Adrian gazed at her face, and the expression there was one of such astonishment. “That is all I ask of you, my love.” He took her hand and kissed it softly. “It has been all I have ever longed for, to be with you, to be your friend, your partner, your confidant and most of all, the one you make love to.”
