The town square was filled with voices, traders shouting their offers in customers' ears, children running around, and the wonderful smell of chestnuts. Elena walked through the square holding her notebook. Buying ink was not her main reason for coming out today. Her heart ached with conflicting feelings. It was hard to believe Adrian; his words about Sophia haunted her ears, but Sophia's warning was burning in her head. Elena's hand tightened around the notebook's cover as she approached the fountain, where a man leaned against the marble wall. The stranger's gaze fixed on Elena, and she quickened her steps, trying to avoid his knowing stare. She had seen him often lately, walking around the town with a confident gait and an arrogant smile on his face. Today, the man's glance was especially unpleasant, boring into her with a mixture of mockery and something akin to hatred. Elena's lips parted in surprise when the stranger called her name.
"Miss Rivers, I presume?" the man said, straightening up as she drew closer. "I am most delighted to see you." His voice was smooth and melodic, almost hypnotic. "Do you know me?" Elena asked warily, recognizing the look in the stranger's eyes. He smiled wider, showing off perfectly white teeth. "Oh, my dear, I hardly know you," the stranger replied. "However, I know your boyfriend very well." Elena's heart pounded in her chest, and she clutched the notebook to her chest. "What do you mean?" she demanded, her voice shaking. The stranger stepped closer, lowering his voice. "You see, Adrian is not as innocent as one might think. He devours people's words, music, and feelings and turns them into his own. He stole from me, Miss Rivers, and I will do everything in my power to expose him." Shocked, Elena stared at the man. "Stole...?" she whispered. The stranger's smile was gone, revealing a sneer. "Yes, he stole my music, songs, poems, and plays. He ripped it all off me, leaving me feeling empty and destroyed." His voice trembled with rage.
Elena's mind raced. "What makes you think he stole from you?" she asked. "Have you any proof?" The stranger's laugh was bitter. "Proof? My dear, I have plenty of evidence, but little does Adrian know that I possess it. I will wait for the right moment to expose him, and that moment will surely come." He stepped back, fixing his gaze on Elena. "Trust me, Miss Rivers, the man you have fallen in love with is far from being as good as you believe." With these words, the stranger turned and disappeared among the crowd. Elena's hands trembled as he walked away. A strange feeling of foreboding grew inside her, making her doubt Adrian's words to Sophia. But then she thought about the night they met, how kind and gentle he was, how much he cared... Perhaps the stranger was lying? Perhaps his accusations were false, as Adrian claimed? “I do not believe you,” she said, though her heartbeat betrayed her. The stranger smirked. "You will come to realize it soon enough. I have letters, poems, and songs that belong to me, not Adrian. This charlatan fools everyone, including you, Miss Rivers." He took a step back before adding, "And if you want to know more, ask him." With that, the stranger was gone, swallowed by the bustling marketplace.
Elena walked away, her mind made up. That evening, she came to the studio where Adrian spent most of his time when he was not wandering the streets with his music. Elena knocked on the door, and he opened it, revealing a small room filled with musical instruments and stacks of paper. "Elena," Adrian said, smiling broadly. "What a surprise! I was just working on something new." He peered at her closely, noticing the troubled look on her face. "What's wrong?" His smile faded as he ushered her inside. "I met Marcus today," Elena said hesitantly. At the mention of her boyfriend's name, Adrian's expression darkened. "What did he say?" she asked. His jaw twitched with anger, his fists clenched at his sides. "He is a manipulative and arrogant man who loves lying," Elena replied, her voice shaking. "He accused you of stealing his music, poems, and ideas. He said you were a fraud. " Her cheeks were red as she glared at him. "He even said you stole his letters, songs, and plays. Elena stepped closer. "If he is lying, why does he have all these things?"
Adrian looked up at her, eyes burning with something between anger and sadness. "Because he wants to ruin me," he said quietly. "He has tried to do it many times already, but he always fails. That miserable man cannot create anything beautiful, so he takes what others make and twists it until it becomes something nasty. He spreads rumors about me whenever he gets the chance, and now he has found new ways to do so." His voice hardened. "Do not believe him, Elena. He only wants to hurt me, and he has been trying for years." But as he looked into her eyes, a wave of doubt crashed over him. "Why did Sophia warn me, too?" Elena challenged. Adrian looked surprised at her words. "I do not know," he said after a moment. "Perhaps she believes him, or perhaps she is angry with me. Either way, I do not think she can change her mind." He looked at Elena, sadness evident in his voice. "I cannot control what others say about me, but if you want to know the truth, I am here to tell you." His hands reached for her, fingers brushing against her cheek. "I believe in you, but I fear that you cannot believe in me."
Elena felt trapped between her thoughts about Marcus and the feeling she had when she looked into Adrian's eyes. She sat in the room, hugging her knees to her chest. "Then show me the truth," she said, her voice barely audible. Adrian looked puzzled. "The truth?" he asked. Elena lifted her head and met his gaze. "Show me something no one else can take from you." Slowly, he rose and picked up his guitar, strumming a few chords. A deep, melodious sound filled the room, carrying with it a bittersweet feeling. "This is my song," Adrian said as he played. "It was born from my soul and has traveled to hearts that have loved and lost." His music wrapped around Elena, drowning out all the other voices that had accused him. When he finished, she looked at him, her eyes wide with wonder. "It is beautiful," she whispered. "I want to believe you, but it is not enough." Her hand rested on Adrian's knee, his skin warm against her palm. "Let the music lead us, my friend." With a trembling smile, he pulled her close, resting his head against hers.
"I believe in you," he murmured. "In your song, in your words, in your laughter... But will you believe in me?" The girl looked up at him, her heart aching. "I want to, but something inside tells me the answer is no." Their lips met in a kiss that tasted of both sorrow and hope, sealing their bond even as the shadows lengthened around them. The moon had risen high above the meadow, casting its pale glow over the silent world. Elena walked toward it, her thoughts clouded with the day's events. The voices from the square and the studio haunted her dreams, whispering doubts that clung to her like ivy. Every step she took now felt as though she were walking on shaky legs. Her heart ached with conflicting feelings for the man whose fate was entwined with hers. She could not escape the sense that she had become trapped in a cruel farce, with Sophia, her boyfriend, and, perhaps, even herself acting as players. Yet, as she looked up at the ever-watchful moon, she realized that the path of love and truth was still open, and she would find it somehow. Adrian's fate was uncertain; his rival continued to plot, and his boyfriend's lies still bothered him. The shadows of rivalry would always linger, but in the heart of the moonlight, love and music were still his allies.
