Under the silver glow of the moon, Elena sat on a stone bench by the lake, her quill moving across the parchment as she searched for words that would not escape her tonight. A cool breeze whispered through the willows, their leaves shimmering like dancers in an underwater ballroom. Her writing was interrupted by an unexpected visitor, a dog bounding toward her with its tail wagging like a metronome. It skidded to a stop, black eyes shining with curiosity. “Hello there,” Elena said softly. There was no need to raise her voice; the dog was already close enough for whispers.
The dog thumped its tail, tongue hanging out. Behind it came a man, his long legs carrying him with purpose as his hand reached for the collar. “Evening. He’s friendly, but I apologize for the interruption.” Elena looked up, squinting against the moonlight. “No interruption. I’m Elena.” She extended her free hand, the one not holding her quill. He took it, his fingers warm despite the evening chill. “Adrian. My dog, Orion, seems to have taken a liking to your company.” Orion leaned in, sniffing at Elena’s notebook, his cold nose almost touching the ink. Adrian laughed quietly. “He is curious.”
Elena chuckled and turned the page, shielding it from the dog’s nose. “He should be chasing ducks, not poetry.” Her gaze drifted to the lake, its surface smooth as glass, reflecting the moon in perfect silence. Adrian followed her eyes. “It is beautiful, isn’t it? You are out late, writing.” Elena smiled. “The moon is full tonight. I could not resist.” He gestured toward the notebook. “What kind of poetry keeps you awake at this hour?” Elena hesitated, then turned the page back to reveal the title. “Love found and lost beneath the moonlight.”
Adrian’s eyes widened. He reached for the notebook, his thumb brushing the ink. “This is from your heart.” Elena looked surprised. “Why do you say that?” His gaze lifted, reflecting the moon. “Because I have read it before. A long time ago.” Confused, Elena shook her head. “I have never shown this to anyone.” “It was written in a small notebook, loose leaf, with daisies sketched on the cover.” Elena’s breath caught. That was the notebook she had lost years ago during a storm while visiting her grandmother. She had never found it again. Adrian continued, “I remember wondering who this Elena was and why she felt so deeply.”
Elena stared at him, astonished. “How could you possibly…?” His smile was tinged with regret. “My grandmother and I used to play cards at the old parlor near the town square. One evening, after losing five hands in a row, I stepped outside for air. That is when I found your notebook by the steps. I read a few lines, then saw you running in the rain. I tried to catch up, but you disappeared.” Elena remembered that storm. She had poured her heart onto the page like tears, believing she had lost everything that night. “And now, here we are,” Adrian said softly, his hand resting on the notebook. “Under the moonlight.”
Elena looked at him closely. His eyes were kind, his features gentle. Something stirred within her, like petals opening to the warmth of the sun. “Are you going to keep writing?” he asked, pulling her back from her thoughts. She nodded, her quill tapping against the parchment. “Yes. The moon still shines.” Adrian smiled. “Then I will stay. If you do not mind.” Warmth spread through Elena’s chest. “I do not mind at all.” They sat together beneath the moonlit sky, Adrian with his dog at his side, Elena with her quill resting in her hand. Their voices blended easily, weaving into the night air like threads of a shared story. The lake mirrored their shadows as they leaned closer, lost in each other, forgetting the world beyond.
And so, under the glow of the full moon, love quietly returned. The echoes of their old bond rose again, like a melody remembered after years of silence. What they did not yet know was that this was only the beginning, the continuation of a dance paused long ago, now finding its rhythm once more. In time, they would learn that some loves are never truly lost. They wait patiently, ready to bloom again when the moment is right. And tonight, under the moonlight, theirs had begun to bloom.
