TWENTY-TWO YEARS LATER
"Urgh! stupid college kids" grumbling in annoyance I made my way to the kitchen, muttering a little excuse me and pushing through those who decide to ignore me or have no sense of courtesy, at the same time scanning the room in case I spot Skylar.
"Kia!!!" well there she is... I thought loudly. Following my screaming best friend's voice I turned my head to the left side of the room which was opposite the kitchen where I was heading.
Facing a frantically waving sky, I moved to hug my best friend who I haven't seen in about two weeks. In all her gorgeous glory she skipped my way smiling like a creep. In a trance as usual I went down memory lane, back when I was still in high school.
Starring, I Kiara as the usual loner aka school freak and sky as the highschool sweetheart.
Sometimes I always wonder how we became best friends seeing as she's at the top of the school rank and I was at the rock bottom.
Seriously a friend of freak girl aka "me" is also a freak. Simple as ABC... but it seems that didn't apply to social top rankers or sky in particular, as it didn't affect her social status at all.
Yeah I've been called a freak through out my entire school life , why? oh I'll tell yah, it's because of my eyes!!! If you've seen a snake eye then you can picture how they look.
Shockingly sky had no problem with it. She saw me for who I was and not what I look like, and for that she started defending me and standing up for me from the school gossip mongers.
The gossips? I hear them alright. They never say it to my face or confront me about it but they spread rumors real fast.
It never bothered me because it made me kind of famous... not the good type of famous but... famous so indirectly I was like... at the top social rank like sky!!! so I made that a motivation for me until I graduated and got lenses. So if you see me I've got brown eyes not snake eyes or dragon eyes like the rumors portray.
"Um... sky... are you alright, do you need water or you need air" she rushed like a dope rapper.
"Am okay mama bear" I snapped out of my trance smiling wildly like a creep which am sure is the right simile because a huge muscled guy with the military hair cut passed by giving me weird looks.
"I'm so happy you came, thought you wouldn't make it " she sighed giving me a literally tight breathtaking hug.
Smiling in return she released me, while I gave her a playful punch in fake annoyance.
"Really, what did you take me for... I wouldn't miss my bff's birthday party for anything..." I fake frowned folding my arms and pouting my lips.
"Oh boo am sooo soowwy".
"Umph, you better be".
"Come on lets give you a little something to boost your party spirit", smirking mischeviously she took my hands dragging me into the kitchen. Rolling my eyes I followed her remembering the last time she gave me a little something... guess what it didn't end well.
Entering the kitchen I gasped in amazement "when you said your mom was doing a little redecorating I didn't know it was a total renovation".
The kitchen was amazing cupboards white, marble flooring, marble counter and island with three mini white chandeliers over it. It was an all white theme with no single stain or scratch inhaling the room it smelt like jasmine and cleaning agent. No wonder why the place was empty... it was like a forbidden territory.
"Pfft you know my mom" she rolled her eyes mocking her absent mum. Opening the top cupboard sky brought out three shot glasses filling them with a familiar liquid on the sleek counter.
Turning around she pushed the glass to my face asking me to drink, with a glint in her eyes. Sighing in defeat I took the glass tossing it to the back of my throat feeling the burn. 'I knew it, its tequila'.
Scrunching my face passed the glass to her and she giving me another in return, before I knew it I had taken three glasses. "Woah!!! I feel so jumpy" I squealed throwing my hands in the air exiting the kitchen leaving my friend to clean up.
My whole senses felt so alert that I joined the drunk partygoers in the living room dancing to the beat not believing that I could feel normal once again. Twerking and grinding against an unknown stranger I lost my self in the music throwing my stress, worries and thoughts out the window.
********************************************************************
In the middle of my dancing, my seeing started to blur and I stopped dancing. Worrying my dance partner of the abrupt change, "are you okay?" the slurring, and swooning voice of my partner whose name I figured was Dan asked me.
"Yeah I think am gonna take a little air outside, no worries"
"Um... okay, should I go with you"
"Nah, thanks am okay" I smiled leaving for the exotic kitchen.
Opening the not so surprising full to the brim fridge. I took out a bottle of water swallowing the refreshing liquid in hopes it would cure my blurred sight. It was still blurred when I opened them and more worse that I couldn't see till I felt a sharp pain in my eyes like I was being nailed in the eye with a pin. Screaming at the top of my lungs, losing my balance I landed on the kitchen floor holding my face in unbearing pain.
I was still on the floor for roughly two minutes moaning and groaning in pain until the pain subside and I could see clearly again. Sighing I rested my back against the wall in exhaustion.
This was not the first time I experienced this, it's just that the pain gets stronger every time and something tells me its gonna get worse. Standing up, I made my way to the backdoor opening it and walking down the stone pathway leading to the grassy field where a white Monteros Tiered fountain could be found.
With three water bowl going from smallest to largest in a descending order; a cross like statue at the top and six squared flower vase around it making the garden look serene in bloom of the moon, I sighed taking a seat on the bench in front of it.
Enjoying the night air, my thoughts came crashing in full force. Mostly, my lonely life as an orphan. No parents or family members, no one to go back to or someone to console me in my darkest days.
A huge pang of jealousy hit me. Skylar. She has everything, surrounded by people who love and care for her, to protect and console her in her darkest days, but I had no one. Not even someone to adopt me at the orphanage, I had to see all my fellow orphans get adopted and see new orphans coming in and out.
Although I never give a damn about this because I'm used to it, but moments like this makes me feel lonely. Moments when I feel vunerable and just hate my deceased parents for leaving me alone.
Feeling my face wet and my nose disgustingly running I wiped my face clean ending my pity thoughts, preparing to leave before sky starts looking for me.
Standing up to leave, my eyes unconsciously moved to the fountain where a strange figure stood behind the fountain. Immediately assuming it was Dan... I moved closer to the fountain and stopped in my steps when the figure growled and snarled showing off a pair of sharp fangs. Moving backwards I gasped in surprise 'did that thing's fang just glint' I thought. Turning around I raced back into the house carrying my none athletic body as fast as I could, not stopping to take a breath or to look back.
I burst into the room trembling,my heart drumming rapidly. I searched through the crowd for the creep I saw outside, trying as much as possible to avoid it as much as possible at the same time scanning the room for Skylar.
Feeling a hand tap my shoulders I stilled fear gripping me, I turned around with my mouth open ready to scream when I sighed in relief seeing sky instead of the monster. I grabbed Skylar's hands with my shaking hands.
"Sky... you've got to help me, I saw someone outside chasing me... it had fangs... a...an...and these really sharp claws and it...it was looking at me like I w...was steak, oh god, sky you have to believe me".
"Um Kiara, you know you're drunk right you must have been seeing things there's no such thing like monsters" Sky laughed not believing any of what I've just said. My heart shrank in disappointment, I couldn't have been seeing things, what I saw was hundred percent real not an illusion.
" Sky you have to believe me what I saw was real", I pleaded in desperation but sky was not having it.
"Kiara just stop it! there's no monster here, please stop it you're acting like a baby. Oh my god are you crying? You're so delusional.
I was so shocked, sky has never been so harsh to me before... never. I wiped my heavily running tears while trying to calm my racing heart ready call Skylar off her bitchiness.
I gasped, moving backwards slowly, frowning in confusion not believing what I was seeing because Skylar looked hideous... not the Skylar is ugly hideous but she is an animal or a monster hideous.
Glaring at me she snarled showing off her disgustingly long tongue coming out to lick her teeth with a thick strand of saliva flowing out and facial hair growing on her face making her look like a werewolf.
Turning to get as far away from my monster friend I stilled in my movement, everyone else looked like sky,the were all gnarling at me marching closely to where I was, claws spread out to attack if I made the wrong move. The playing music in the background made the scene look crazy. Standing frozen in trepidation I closed my eyes fist closed tightly I chanted 'this is not real, this is not real'.
"Kia?" I opened my eyes slowly, relieved and confused that everything is back to normal. Looking around I noticed all eyes were on me, the music was still playing but no one was dancing they were all looking at me with weird looks like I was crazy.
The funniest thing was that a group of four girls who are the closest to me moved backwards quickly making sure they were five feet apart from me.
"Kia, are you okay? you've been acting strange all night". Turning around I faced sky who was now standing with her boyfriend Gabe.
"Yeah, am okay. I guess you're right I must be seeing things the alcohol I took earlier must have taken a toll on me". That was a big fat lie I didn't take any alcohol earlier, and again what I saw was real.
" I'll say... I've never seen you drink so much" sky said.
She laughed out loud while flipping her hair and hitting her stomach for emphasis. Slowly her laughter morphed darkly a glow lightening up around her figure like a halo in the color purple and facial hair heavily growing on her chin and cheek. Shaking my head it all disappeared again, what's wrong with me today', I thought.
"Urgh!!! you're so annoying I can't keep faking this anymore". This statement got my attention. Smiling in victory she walked up to me speaking in my face. "I hate your guts so much, you're annoying, pathetic and very stupid I can't even imagine how I put up with your stupid self, oh God that felt so good to say". She continued, "Did you think that I Skylar would want to be best friends with you?"
" Ever since I met you my life has been so miserable, everyone had to avoid me like a plague... I lost all my friends and my social life was a disaster and I so f*****g hate you for that.
" I even have to make you so intoxicated, so that I could be with better people but I guess it didn't work this time since you managed to make my life even more miserable when you're drunk".
"I hate you!!! I hate you so ducking much that I could kill you with my bare arms. You pathetic b***h!" she screamed with so much hatred in her voice.
My heart shredded to pieces how could she be so cruel, the person that I thought would have my back when I needed them was a fake, it was all lies these years of friendship was a fake.
I glared at a laughing Skylar with so much hatred and resentment in me that I felt the strong urge to strangle her.
A huge realization dawned on me that while I was busy admiring Skylar, I didn't notice some things like how her voice screeches in the room like a dying cat and how her face looks so plastic.
With a new found courage to stand up for my self I adjusted my stance and I took a deep breath trying to calm my erratic heart beat. Clearing my throat to gain Sky and the already murmuring crowd's attention I faked a smile.
"Wow!!! b-ravo you deserve to win an Oscar. I still can't believe it you've been faking our friendship for twelve years. You fooled me for a whole twelve years, seriously you deserve an Oscar for that.
"That will probably be when you fix that screeching voice of yours it's so annoying you sound like a singing chicken and that face of yours is so hideous you look like Squidward. You remember... that bluish squid in Sponge Bob you should remember...well that if you have a brain to and I wouldn't want you to embarrass you self with all that trash on your face.
"Oh and FYI you should fix an appointment with Doctor Buckley to fix those boobs of yours they look saggy. I walked away past the gawking audience with majority of their jaws dropping. Making my way to the door while hearing Sky's annoying voice screaming curse words at me and her dumb boy friend trying to calm her down.
"How could you allow her to say that to me... no leave me alone I'm going to kill that b***h". Sky Screamed.
**************************************
Walking down the empty streets at past nine. The moon lightened up the side walk making my journey easier.
Tonight's event kept flashing repeatedly in my head, re-opening my wounds again. I still couldn't believe sky would do that.
I was terrified of the consequence of insulting sky like that and am sure she would make my life a living hell in college and am sure about that.
Shaking my head to get rid of those thoughts I continued walking then stopped in my tracks when I noticed my fingers were lightening up.
"Dang it!! Not now, argh!!" I screamed in frustration shaking my hands vigorously to get rid of the glowing light.
I've been trying to learn how to control the sudden glowing of my hands since I was six. There was this girl at the orphanage who I used to play with, her name is Elise.
She once saw the lights and never spoke to me again. When she did her voice trembled like she was scared that I could kill her.
I looked around my surroundings to check if anyone saw the glowing orb. "thank goodness no one saw that... " I trailed off, my heart started to drum rapidly.
On the roof top of a brick building meters away from me was a figure dressed in a black cloak with the hood concealing the face.
The thing was looking at me intently not taking its eyes away as cold shiver ran down my spine, and sweat starting to gather on my forehead.
I stood frozen not knowing what to do.
Opening its mouth like it was saying something, it disappeared in smoke and ashes. I felt my surroundings spinning and I blacked out.
