Freda

“If they fail to give me the money after six days, we’d get married.” “What!” His words hit me like a club hammer to my chest. I raised my two brows, not believing a word he said. “You’re joking, right?” “I figured out that you’re concerned about the blood bath. I only offered a way to end it. You’re free to make a choice.” He took a step further towards me, closing the distance, and I looked up to meet his gaze, my heart skipping a beat. I wondered if his glittering eyes or the news he broke to me made my heart leap. I tore my gaze away from him, shaking my head. This can’t be happening. He can’t seriously be looking for a way to pin me here. “You really are joking.” “Like I said, you’re free to make your choice.” I scoffed, rounding the table and slumping into my seat. “Are you intentionally doing this to spite me?” I cried. “Am I now?” He turned his seat this way and that way, propping his jaw with his hand. “I don’t think so.” “Do you even realize the gravity of what you’re doing? If my mum doesn’t see me after a few days, she is going to mobilize a search, and if she finds me here, you know how dangerous my mother can be!” “I have heard tales of Griselda, Freda. Once tore down two gangs in Rome in one night when you were supposedly missing” He chuckled. “That’s why I’m going to make sure you’re never found. My den would be the last place they’d think of.” “What!” “I can’t bare to lose my men three years after becoming a kingpin. I’d lose my men’s trust.” He smacked his lips. “Maybe, you could see all of these on a whole new light. “ “What are you implying?” “See it as a way to make up.” As he ended his statement, a man dressed in a well-tailored suit walked into the study with a big brown envelope. “Thank you.” As soon as the man left, he waved the envelope at me and revealed the contents. “Here, the marriage certificate. You have six days. You should be locked up till you make a decision, but I’m going to be kind to you. Mateo would show you to your room, and your men will be shown where to stay.” I glared at him, but he removed his gaze and slid the papers back into the envelope. What does he really want? Is he doing this because of the situation twelve years ago? Was he that broken? Furious, I stumped out of the study to see my man, Max, manning the door. “Where’s the other one?” He pointed in the direction behind me. I turned around to see him approaching, the one Michael referred to as Mateo. He got up close and stopped, his gaze moving from me to Max, then back to me. “Mike said you should find me a room. And a place for my boys.” He looked at me for a moment too long before answering. "Follow me." I followed him, and he headed backwards, Max following us behind. We walked down the brightly lit hallway, decorated with luxurious, red Persian rugs, till we got to the last door at the hallway, opposite another door, and Mateo pulled out a keycard and slotted it in. With a click, the door unlocked, and he pushed it open, handing me the keycard, and waited. “What?” I raised a brow at him. “I should show him to his place. I have stuff to help my boss take care of.” I turned to Max. “I need you in the next five minutes.” “Yes, ma'am.” With a nod, he followed Mateo. I walked inside the bedroom. It was expensive and luxurious in its own way. I slumped to a small cushion facing the king-sized bed, thinking. Marriage was the last thing on my mind, and to think I was going to get married to my enemy wasn't making sense. I have to find a way out of this house. But how? I'm outnumbered. Even though the three guards with me here are good, getting me out of here will result in a blood bath with minimal chances of survival. One way or another, I must leave this place. I can’t marry Michael. My phone vibrating snapped me out of my thoughts. I pulled it out to see that the caller was my mum. “Mum?” “What do you think you’re doing?” Her voice snapped from the other end. “I’ve got this. I got a little bit engaged.” “I need you at the manor in the next three days. I need you to handle a few things.” “Three days?” “Of course. I’d give you the details when I see you.” I was about to protest when the line went dead. God! This is getting complicated. My mother wants to see me in the next three days. If she doesn't see me in the next three days, she is sure to begin a search. What would happen if they realized I was here? Considering that my brother died in the hands of Michael’s men, my mother could conclude that it was a case of kidnap and react, and the dark shadows knew my mum was dangerous. I groaned, clutching my head and falling to the bed on my back. What had I gotten myself into? Had I not offered myself for auction, I'd not be here in the first place. I didn't keep my ego in check, and I'm paying for it. No, it was that b***h. It had nothing to do with me. Suddenly, I heard a knock on the door. I sat up as the door swung open. It was Max. “Feeds?” I raised a brow. “Queen mother called. Asked your whereabouts. Told her you got gigs. The boys still got their lips shut.” I took a deep sigh. “My mother must not hear of anything about this, you hear me?” “Uh…I think your mother already knows where you are, Ma’ am.” “You’re joking, right?” I hushed.
