05 Disrupted Termination

Ana: “Congratulations, Mrs. Williams.” Those words that are used to give comfort and elation to a person have a completely opposite feeling for me. The words that should give me that warm and fuzzy feeling inside and transport me on Cloud 9 are actually making me feel like the whole world has crashed down on me. I’m…really pregnant. “H-how…how fa…r…how…?” I try to force the words out of my mouth. However, it seems that no matter how hard I do, I can’t seem to push what I want to say past my throat. Even though I already know how I became pregnant, I still want to confirm it. Maybe the father of my baby is someone else I know. Maybe I slept with someone else that I didn’t know about. Maybe it was Valerian or— “You are seven weeks pregnant,” the doctor replies, his smile gentle and calm. His demeanor would have soothed and calmed me down. But that will only happen if I really am trying to get pregnant on purpose. That I am someone who yearns to have a family regardless of whether I have a husband waiting for me to tell him the news. He probably thought I’m a just new mother and the reason why I was stuttering and stammering away was because it was my first time and the nerves were getting to me. He just doesn’t know the real reason why I was tripping over my words like that. “And they’re twins! Both are healthy so rest assured, you don’t have to worry too much. Double congratulations to you, Mrs. Williams. Here, I’ll list down some supplements and food suggestions you need to take for their continued health…” As the doctor busied himself with writing a prescription for me, everything around me turned blurry. Not only am I pregnant with an unknown man but I also am going to have not one, but two children?! Why is this happening to me? What did I do to deserve this? What will I do so I can raise my two children properly when I’m still just a student myself? Thoughts are whirling in my mind. They’re spinning so fast, it’s making me feel dizzy. I can’t think properly however, I have to acknowledge the elephant in the room. I’m already struggling with taking care of myself, my expenses, along with my studies. I don’t think I can handle adding the responsibility of taking care of a child, let alone twins. I feel the clock is ticking, chasing me and gaining up on me fast. I feel like I have to decide right here, right now in order to get everything over with. From the back of my mind, I know that it might be the pressure, fear of the future, and anxiety of being in this situation that is making me reckless. But… “Doctor…” I whisper in a quivering voice. I thought that he won’t be able to hear me. And…I think something is hidden deep inside of my heart, I wish for him to not hear me. Because if he does— “Hmm? What is it, my dear?” he asks with that same gentle and soothing smile on his face. He is genuine in his feelings of congratulating me that I got pregnant. He’s probably one of those doctors who are sincere and really care about their patients. So…if I tell him of my plans, will he also be one of those people who try to give me advice? Advice that I am desperate to hear from someone or anyone at all. Haha. As if I thought I was already pathetic enough to be pregnant with a complete stranger’s children, here I am, yearning for even a little bit of help from yet another stranger. How pathetic of me. “I…want to have an abortion…” The words tumble out of my mouth as if it was being pushed out forcibly by the turmoil that was brewing inside of me. I gasp and clench my hands into fists, stopping myself from lifting them up to my face where I can scream in frustration. “Pardon?” At the question, I start to fidget and start playing with the hem of my shirt, all the while avoiding his gaze. “…want…abort…” I mumble under my breath as my vision starts to get even more blurry, the edges are growing dark. I can feel doubt, guilt, fear, and anxiety creeping up at me like slimy hands. I think I can imagine them slithering up my body only to rest around my throat, slowly constricting my airways until I— “Mrs. Williams! Mrs. Williams! Breathe!” At that, I gasped, greedily sucking in some air like a drowning person who managed to break through the water’s surface. It feels as if the moment oxygen returned to my brain, I snap to attention. Blinking, I see the doctor’s worried face before me. I also feel him gently pat my shoulder. “That’s it. That’s it. Breathe. In.” He inhales. “And out.” He exhales. And I find myself mimicking him, letting in more air into my deprived system and clearing my mind. “There we go. Your color is finally returning back to normal, which is a good sign. Now…” He reaches for my shoulders and carefully urges me to sit on one of the hospital beds found in his office. He then pulls up one of the chairs near him, positioning it before me, and then sitting down. “Tell me, my dear. I hope you don’t mind me asking this but…is it safe for me to assume that you are not a Mrs.?” he inquires softly. I open my mouth to answer him. I am tempted beyond belief to tell him everything. Just as I have told everything to Valerian, who came here with me but I threatened to castrate him if he doesn’t go back to school and leave me here for now. However, I know I can’t do that. Instead of answering, I just ended up closing my mouth and shaking my head. “I see,” came the doctor’s simple response. Silence reigns between us for a while before the doctor speaks up once again. “Are you sure about this? I don’t mean to pry or anything, nor it is any of my intentions to judge you of your choices. But…I have had my fair share of cases like this in the past. And because of that, I notice that young ones who end up in the same situation as you have often decided on the spot. And oftentimes, I see them regret their decisions after the haze of confusion and anxiety finally clears from their minds.” “B-but, doctor,” I stammer, my fingers starting to anxiously fidget on the edge of my clothes. “I’m just a student right now. I am already swamped with everything that’s happening in my life and I think I simply can’t add the responsibility of taking care of a kid. But having to take care of two? I…” As the words fail to come out of my mouth, I lower my head and let out a shaky breath before trying again. “I…I don’t want to get rid of them. They’re my own flesh and blood and…knowing that they’re growing inside of me is making me love them already. But…I just don’t want them to undergo such hardship all because I wasn’t ready to provide for them. So, please, doctor…” Lifting my gaze up to the man, I can see him frowning and pressing his lips tightly. I know that he, too, seems to understand where I’m coming from to make such a request. In the end, he sighs and gives me a solemn nod. “It appears that, despite the surprising circumstance that fell on your lap, you seem to have thought things through for the most part. If that is your decision, then I shall help you.” As the doctor made preparations for the procedure, I also made preparations myself while I lay on the operating table. I prepared myself for what was to come as I lift a quivering hand over my stomach. The mental image that momentarily drifted into my mind of me living a future with my twin children made my heart twist inside my chest. Especially after knowing that such a moving and precious scene won’t ever happen because I am going to be getting rid of them. And that’s when I started to have doubts. Am I really going to go through with this? Is this really the right thing to do? Am I really doing this for my children or…for myself? Should I just go through this and live a somewhat tolerable life where I am still just a student? Or should I not and suffer even more work, even more responsibility with little to no help to provide for my children, who I didn’t even plan of having? As I ask those questions to myself, one answer rings out more loudly than the other answers that are wriggling in my head. An answer that mostly came from my instincts. And ever since I was born, my instincts were never wrong. And my instincts are telling me… “Doctor,” I call out as I slowly sit back up on the operating table. My hand settles protectively over my stomach. “Yes, my dear?” the doctor asks, turning my way while he fiddles with the equipment needed for the procedure. I change my mind, Doctor. I won’t be going through with the abortion, is what I would have said. However, the moment I open my mouth to finally tell him of my decision, several men in black suits and black sunglasses file into the room. My eyes widen at their arrival and from the corner of my eye, I can see that the doctor is also caught off guard. “Hey, who are you, people?! What are you doing here?” the doctor demands angrily as soon as he recovered. “Please, calm down,” one of the men in black said. “All we want is the girl—” “May I ask, why?” the doctor asks, frowning at the newcomers. The first man who came in avoids his gaze. “You don’t need to know that, Doctor. So, if you don’t mind. The girl?” “This is trespassing and if I didn’t know any better, k********g! I am calling the authorities!” The doctor then turns to reach for the alarm but one of the men smacked the doctor on the head. The doctor falls face first on the floor and I hear something c***k. Seconds later, blood starts pooling around his head. “Doctor!” I screech. The smell of blood is pungent in the air, growing heavier and making me dizzier. “Quick, grab her and get out,” I can barely hear one of the men talking to his companions. “I will handle the mess this greenhorn made. Move out.” I feel hands grab my arm but I couldn’t even try to peel off one of the thugs’ hold on me. As the smell of blood starts to suffocate me, my vision grows dark once again. But this time, without the doctor’s advice and guidance to help me breathe, everything went completely black. And I fainted.
