Chapter 7. Distracted (Amelia)

1956 Words
“He is here,’ I said to Rita as soon as the door closed behind me. “Shut up, no he is not.” She ran over to the swinging door and peeked into the dining room. “Well I’ll be damned, he is, isn’t that just the cutest thing. I told you he liked you girl. And you wanted to take your break now?” She nudged me on the arm, walking back to the industrial stove, flipping a few patties at the perfect moment. I don’t know how she did it, but this woman cooked everything perfectly. No wonder she kept in business, even with the weird theme of her diner. “What do you mean cute? I still don’t know what to make of this guy. His feelings are… different.” I said, looking at the door nervously. “What do you mean by different?” she asked, watching me closely. “I don’t know, it was just weird yesterday. Why do you think I left early? It was too confusing.” I said plainly, still staring at the door. “Are you afraid of him?” she asked cautiously, moving the patties to the prep station. “No, and that’s just it. As confusing as he is, I have this weird feeling that he’s the safest person I have ever met. But he’s HUGE!” I said, finally looking at her. “Hun, I know your virgin ears may not want to hear this, but you need to climb that damn tree. If I was 10 years younger, I would. But my back is not prepared for no giant trees anymore.” She laughed, handing me a tray of food that needed to be taken to the customers. Ushering me back toward the dining room, “Now get out there and do what I pay you too, maybe you can get a date at the end of his order too,” she winked before pushing me through the door. I almost stumbled out the door, making sure not to drop the food. I walked over to the table the food belonged to, forced a smile on my face and handed everything out. Of course, my head was so distracted I could feel everything from the table a little too strongly. The man to the right couldn’t take his eyes off my rack, which was pissing off the women across from him. Which caused her to have some very strong hateful feelings towards me. The kid sitting between them was struggling with some serious depression. I stepped back so abruptly from the table, causing me to trip over the chair to the table behind me. I closed my eyes and braced myself to hit the floor, but I never did. All I felt was these strange tingles shooting up my back as someone caught me. They had this weird way of making me feel as calm as ever, while also making my core slicken a little. How that made sense was beyond me. But here I was way too calm, and way too turned on for someone who was about to smack their head into the table behind them. “Are you alright Darlin?” He asked with that sexy-ass-deep voice of his. “Um, yea, thanks for the save, Emmett,” I said, jumping onto my feet and taking a small step back, bowing my head in embarrassment. Bringing his finger to my chin, he lifted my face to meet his eyes, a small smile on his face. “Any time you need it beautiful.” Well damn, I thought guys only did this in movies. I didn’t know what to say, so I just looked at him like an i***t. It felt like a solid 10 minutes had past, when I am sure it was no more then a few seconds because the family behind me was just now asking if I was alright. “Are you OK Amelia?” Rita all but pushed her way past Emmett to check on me. Giving me the distraction I needed to peel my eyes away from his. “Yea I’m good, I am so sorry folks, I just lost my footing. Please enjoy your meals.” I pushed passed Rita to walk out the front door. I couldn’t be in the building anymore. That stupid pitiful emotion was so strong in the building it was choking me. I needed to smoke, to clear my head, so I could straighten my own emotions again. Stupid curse, I don’t care what anyone has ever said about it, this is a curse, not a blessing. “Amelia, are you OK?” Rita asked again, peeking her head out of the diner. “Yea, I um.. I am going to take my break if that’s OK. I just need a moment.” She gave me a knowing look and a nod before heading back inside. I made my way around the building to my little hideaway. Pulling my supplies out of the little shelf, I sat down and allowed my medicine to do what it does best. To calm down my “gift” and allow me to breathe. Just as I was exhaling the last of it, I heard someone clear their throat, scaring the ba-jesus out of me. “It is very rude to sneak up on people you know,” I yelled out at whoever was standing outside of my hiding spot. “To be fair, I didn’t know I was sneaking until I saw this little man made hide away of yours.” Came that deep voice I had only heard a few times, but would know anywhere. I stuck my head out of my cove, having to blink twice as he was so tall the sun was right next to his face. “Oh, uh, yea… My boss made it for me if that counts for anything.” I said sheepishly. “Does your boss know what you do in it as well?” He asks with a grin that tells me I was caught red, or green-handed. I bundled up everything and stuck it back on its secret shelf and walked out of my cove to face him. “As a matter of fact, she does, what about it?” I asked, crossing my arms and trying to act tougher than I felt. “No judgement here,” he said, holding his arms up in surrender. “I just didn’t want to be the one to get you caught if you were not supposed to be doing such things on the property.” “Yea, it is medicinal for me, so she supports it,” I shrug. I know it is legal and all, but a lot of small-town folks still frown upon it. I mean I get it; it is just like when those idiots take drinking too far and make it look like it’s a bad thing. But if handled properly and not overdone, it is safer than all those psych meds doctors are trying to put everyone on. I just wish more people realized it. “I really didn’t mean to startle you, I just wanted to make sure you were OK. You looked like you were going to faint just before you tripped.” He said, taking a small step closer to me, blocking the sun I was squinting at. Whether it was to block the sun or just trying to get closer to me, I was unsure. “I am OK, thank you so much for the save, that probably would have ended up very badly,” I laughed it off. What was I supposed to say: ‘oh yea, I was getting too overwhelmed by everyone’s emotions because you were so distracting that I tripped.’ I think not. “Anytime you need saving, I would be honored to do the saving,” he said with a very distracting smile, taking yet another small step closer to me. At this point, he was so close I could rest my hands on his chest if I wanted to. I had to crane my neck just to look him in the face and good lord did he smell like heaven. Who smells this good? “uh, yea, I, uh,” The words stumbled out of my mouth. I couldn’t even form a proper sentence. I was so flustered. What was happening to me? Did I over do it back in my cove? “You sure your good?” he asked, with the cockiest grin I had ever seen before. Completely knocking me out of whatever trance I was in. Which was equally good and bad because I could almost taste his confidence in the air. But it wasn’t the only emotion he was sending out in waves. The second emotion terrified me. “Yes sir, I am all good, how about we head back in so I can get your order.” I stated as confidently as possible, stepping around him and heading back around the building. “My order isn’t on that menu,” I heard him mutter. “Excuse me?” I spun around and faced him. If he’s going to be so bold, better be ballsy enough to say it to my face. At first, he looked shocked when I heard him, but he recovered quickly. “I said,” He stepped up, matching my every step to get as close as possible, my back hitting the wall of the building, “What I want isn’t on the menu, but I keep finding it in the building, just out of reach.” He leaned down and I swear he sniffed me. It was subtle and oddly attractive, but I couldn’t be sure of it. “Very bold, are we?” I asked, sounding way more confident than I felt for the moment. “Oh darling, you have no idea.” He smiled down at me. I thought I was tall for a girl, at 5’8” But this man made me feel like a midget standing so close together. “But I will do the gentlemanly thing, even though everything in me is screaming not to.” Then he stepped back, to my disappointment, which surprised me. I should be uncomfortable in this situation, but this man was doing things to my body I had NEVER felt before and it was so damn confusing. Not to mention his feelings of arousal were stirring mine into a frenzy. Or was it all his? UGH! “Are you even listening to me?” He chuckled. Apparently, I wasn’t paying any attention to what he had said, because I was lost at that point. “Honestly, no, I didn’t hear a word you said, sorry.” I shrugged. No point in lying. “I asked if there was any way I could take you out this weekend? Treat you like a proper lady.” He asked, with this half grin that made me all melty inside. “Uh, sure, why not? If you promise you’re not secretly a murderer or something,” I joked. “Guess you’ll have to wait and find out on Friday, huh? You have my number, text me and we will hash out the time and place I can pick you up.” He took my hand, kissed the back of it, and with a wink he turned from me and headed to his car. “That’s not very reassuring, you know!” I yelled across the parking lot to him. He just winked again before he got into his car and drove away. Leaving me standing completely stunned. What the heck just happened?
