The Fire Runes

The night air was thick with tension as Ethan and Caldris stood in the clearing, the faint traces of dark magic still lingering in the air where the summoner had vanished. Ethan’s heart pounded in his chest, his body still trembling from the fight. He had faced many dangers since coming to the Academy, but nothing had prepared him for the sheer power he had felt in that dark magic. Whoever the summoner was, they were no ordinary threat. Caldris, still clutching his glowing amulet, cursed under his breath. “We had them, but they slipped away. That spell… it’s one I haven’t seen in years.” Ethan turned toward him, his brow furrowed. “What kind of magic was that?” Caldris shook his head, his face dark with worry. “An ancient spell. One of the few that allows a caster to escape the bonds of this world without leaving a trace. Whoever that summoner is, they’ve mastered a dangerous craft. And if they’ve come this close to the Academy, it means they’re after something—or someone.” Ethan clenched his fists. “They mentioned the Shadow King. Could he be behind this?” “It’s possible,” Caldris said, his eyes narrowing. “But there’s something else at work here. The Shadow King’s forces have been growing, but this kind of magic… it’s older. And it’s tied to a power we don’t yet understand.” Ethan felt a knot form in his stomach. The more he learned about the forces arrayed against them, the more dangerous everything seemed. But he couldn’t afford to be paralyzed by fear. He had to keep moving, keep learning. The safety of the Academy—and perhaps the world—depended on it. Caldris turned to him, his expression grim. “We can’t stay here. The summoner is gone, but they’ll be back. And when they return, they’ll come with more than just spirits.” Ethan nodded, swallowing hard. “Where do we go?” “There’s something you need to learn,” Caldris said, his tone heavy with urgency. “The summoner used a powerful escape spell, but it left traces of their magic behind. We might be able to track them if we act quickly. But to do that, you’ll need to master an ancient form of magic—the Fire Runes.” Ethan’s eyes widened. He had heard stories of the Fire Runes, legendary symbols of power that allowed their wielders to manipulate fire in ways beyond comprehension. They were dangerous and difficult to master, and only the most skilled mages and warriors could wield them without being consumed by their power. “I’ve never learned anything about fire magic,” Ethan admitted. “How am I supposed to master something like the Fire Runes?” Caldris’s eyes gleamed in the dim light, a flicker of respect showing through his usually guarded expression. “You don’t need to be a mage to use the runes. The magic is in the symbols themselves. With the right focus and discipline, even a warrior can wield their power. And you,” he added, glancing at Ethan’s satchel where the ancient relic from Orion rested, “are no ordinary warrior.” Ethan hesitated. The Fire Runes were legendary for their power but also for their danger. He had heard stories of warriors who had been burned alive by the magic, their bodies consumed by the very flames they tried to control. But if this was the only way to track the summoner and stop whatever dark magic they were planning, he had no choice. “What do I need to do?” Ethan asked, his voice steady. Caldris gestured for Ethan to follow him, leading him deeper into the forest. The trees grew denser, their twisted branches blocking out the moonlight, casting long, eerie shadows on the ground. As they walked, the air grew warmer, and Ethan could feel the faint hum of energy in the air—magic, ancient and powerful, pulsing beneath the surface of the earth. Finally, they came to a small, secluded clearing. At the center of the clearing was a large, flat stone, its surface covered in intricate, glowing symbols. The Fire Runes. “These runes were carved centuries ago by the first fire mages,” Caldris explained, his voice low and reverent. “They draw their power from the earth and the energy of the world itself. If you can channel that power, you can use the runes to track the summoner’s magic.” Ethan stared at the runes, feeling a strange pull toward them. The symbols glowed faintly, their light flickering like flames. He could sense the heat radiating from them, and a part of him felt drawn to the power they promised. “How do I use them?” Ethan asked, his voice barely above a whisper. Caldris stepped forward, kneeling beside the stone. “First, you need to focus. Clear your mind. The runes respond to intent, to will. If your thoughts are scattered, they’ll burn you alive. But if you can control them, they’ll give you the power to track the summoner’s magic—and maybe even more.” Ethan swallowed hard, his heart pounding in his chest. He knelt beside Caldris, his eyes fixed on the glowing runes. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing thoughts. The danger was real, but so was the need to act. Slowly, Ethan extended his hand toward the stone, his fingers hovering just above the glowing symbols. The heat was intense, but he didn’t pull back. He could feel the power thrumming beneath his fingertips, a dangerous, burning energy that threatened to consume him if he wasn’t careful. “Focus,” Caldris murmured. “Let the energy flow through you, not against you. You’re not fighting the fire. You’re guiding it.” Ethan nodded, his breath coming in shallow gasps. He closed his eyes again and focused, trying to push aside the fear and doubt that gnawed at him. He thought of the summoner, of the dark magic that threatened the Academy, of the Trio of Guardians that had placed their trust in him. He thought of Orion and the mission he had been given. As he focused, he felt the energy of the runes shift. The heat grew more intense, but instead of burning him, it seemed to flow through him, filling him with a strange, exhilarating power. The runes glowed brighter, their light flickering like flames. “I can feel it,” Ethan whispered, his voice tight with concentration. “Good,” Caldris said, his tone approving. “Now, follow the magic. Reach out with your mind. The summoner’s spell left a trail. If you can find it, we can track them.” Ethan’s hand hovered over the runes, his mind racing as he tried to focus. Slowly, he reached out with his thoughts, trying to sense the lingering traces of the summoner’s magic. At first, there was nothing, just the overwhelming heat of the runes. But then, faintly, he felt it—a thread of dark magic, like a shadow lurking just beyond the edge of his consciousness. “I’ve got it,” Ethan said, his voice barely above a whisper. Caldris nodded, his eyes fixed on the glowing runes. “Good. Now, hold on to it. Don’t let it slip away.” Ethan’s grip on the thread of magic tightened, his focus sharp. The runes flared brighter, their flames casting long shadows across the clearing. He could feel the power growing, building inside him like a fire that was about to erupt. And then, suddenly, the thread of magic snapped. Ethan gasped, his eyes flying open as the runes dimmed. The power faded, leaving him feeling cold and drained. “What happened?” he asked, his voice trembling. Caldris frowned, his brow furrowed in thought. “The summoner’s magic… it’s stronger than I thought. They’ve hidden their trail well. But you managed to follow it for a moment, and that’s a start.” Ethan clenched his fists, frustration bubbling up inside him. “It’s not enough. We need to find them before they strike again.” Caldris’s expression softened, and he placed a hand on Ethan’s shoulder. “You’re doing well, Ethan. The Fire Runes are not easy to master, but you’re getting there. We’ll keep trying. We’ll find them.” Ethan nodded, though the weight of the task ahead still pressed heavily on his shoulders. The summoner was out there, hiding in the shadows, and the danger was growing. But with the power of the Fire Runes at his side, Ethan knew he had a chance.
